Hey guys! Hope you’re all having a great day! Now, for today’s video, I thought it’d be a good idea to go into detail about a certain character’s origins in the Jurassic Park Universe. A character who’s popularity appears to have grown to nearly the same heights as that of Alan Grant or even Ian Malcolm. I’m of course talking about Roland, the African Big-Game Hunter from The Lost World. Even though he was only featured in a single Jurassic Park film before his untimely death in 2011, Pete Postlethwaite’s Roland Tembo seems to have resonated with several audience members and become somewhat of an iconic part of the series history. In this video, we’ll be discussing where exactly the idea for Roland Tembo comes from, what kind of person he really was as well as, his similarities and differences with other prominent Jurassic Park characters in the series. We’re going to go into the Backstory and Origins of Roland Tembo…

"Peter. If you want me to run your little camping trip, there are two conditions. Firstly: I'm in charge, and when I'm not around, Dieter is. All you need to do is sign the checks, tell us we're doing a good job, and open your case of scotch when we have a good day. Second condition, my fee: you can keep it. All I want in exchange for my services is the right to hunt one of the Tyrannosaurs. A male, a buck only. How and why are my business. Now if you don't like either of those two conditions, you're on your own. So go ahead, set up base camp right here, or in a swamp, or in the middle of a Rex nest for all I care. But I've been on too many safaris with rich dentists to listen to any more suicidal ideas, okay?" - Roland Tembo

Roland Tembo was definitely my favorite in the movie as well, and one of the reasons I loved this movie was that the line between villain and hero was not so clear cut. Sure, Ludlow was certainly awful, and Eddie was a goddamn hero, but Van Owen and Tembo showed that protagonist and antagonist in story telling should not be synonymous with good and evil, hero and villain.

Roland was one of, if not the best character in the Lost World. Great character develpment. He goes from, "All I want is the right to hunt one of the Tyranosaurs. A male - a Buck only! How and why are my reasons." To, at the end, "No thank you. I believe I've spent enough time in the company of death." If that doesn't speak volumes, I don't know what will.

Even if Roland was able to genuinely hunt the bull T. Rex the way he wanted to, it would still be a logistical nightmare. Find the bull and get him killed. Now you have the Rex down. You have no idea how thick the hide is and now you have to get him dressed out and caped out for a shoulder or full body mount. You have to manage to get the head and the hide out of there and home. Or on top of that, store, keep and transport some of the meat without it going bad if you’re gonna eat him too. All while avoiding raptors and the other 4 adult Rexes that are canonically on the island. Even with the InGen team that was there with him, it would be a lot of work making that hunt happen.

Actually, Tembo reminds me more than a little bit of the depiction of Muldoon in the original novel, especially the casual contempt displayed for characters they considered dishonorable or foolish, and the matter-of-fact, slightly jaded way each spoke about animals and nature and even maulings. Muldoon was supposed to have been a big game hunter and safari guide before he moved on to consulting and zoo/park design before working for InGen, and even mentioned he accepted a position at the park as game warden because he was frankly bored with more 'ordinary' animals and zoos.
@gregbrooks4116

I feel like Tembo was meant to be Muldoon. Theyre both white hunters for hire from Kenya who appear to be switched on to the dangers of the dinosaurs whilst everyone else is oblivious. During the filming for JP the actor for Muldoon was battling cancer, so this may have forced them to kill the character off - this is backed up by the fact that he survived in the book. If Muldoon had survived I doubt they would have introduced another different big game hunter in the Lost World. I feel that Tembo is more popular because he had a bigger role to play and was generally a more well written and acted character

Roland was always my favorite character in the movie, just because of how protective he is. After Dieter goes missing, his first response is to not let Kelly know, so she wouldn't get scared. Then, when he thinks Sarah is bleeding, he stops her to make sure she's okay. IMO, that makes him a damn good man.

Yeah. I remember reading this in the IMDb trivia page for the Lost World, about that song. Roland is one of my favourite Jurassic Park characters, and just characters in general. His badass but honourable persona really makes me like him. The fact he doesn’t want to kill the T-Rex, but take him down in a fight shows a sense of honour, only wanting to beat the Rex in a fair fight. As opposed to sniping him at a really long distance, like that dentist did a few years back, which Roland somewhat predicted; “I’ve been on too many safaris with rich dentists, to listen to anymore suicidal ideas!”

@Amp661 2 жыл бұрын
@@dafilmqueen556 Nick was secretly hired by Hammond to sabotage Ingens efforts to capture the dinos. As such hes screwed everything up. No by himself, but mainly him. He busted out dinos from their cages when the stampede has destroyed the camp, injured or killed innocents, and destroyed the link to the mainland. Afterwards he (and equally dumb Sarah Harding) bring a baby rex back into the trailer injured instead of releasing it into the wild where its parents wouldnt be alarmed and destroy the trailers and result in Eddie's death. Because of the infants insecure status and blood on Sarahs jacket (that's not Nick's fault though) they return and destroy the camp resulting in more deaths due to Nick disarming Roland after tries to save what's left of the team AND hunt. Since Ingen is disorganized, many more are killed in long grass instead of rallying to knock out the last rex if Roland hadn't already. I don't see Van Owen as a great character.
@dafilmqueen556
@dafilmqueen556 2 жыл бұрын
@@Amp661, now that makes a lot of sense. So basically he's a terrible character because of lack of common sense, and despite good intentions of freeing the dinosaurs, causes more damage by doing so.

I kinda wish there was more on what happened to Roland after 1997. Lately I’ve been thinking it would have been cool if somehow Roland ran into Van Owen at the bar in Mombasa like two years later. Roland is there with two drinks, one for him and a ceremonial drink for his late friend Ajay. He hears commotion and looks to see a familiar face, Nick Van Owen. He sees Van Owen is being praised by fellow advocates for his work on Sorna. After two years it appears to Roland that Van Owen has no guilt for what he did that inadvertently lead to the deaths of Ajay, the hunters and the San Diego incident itself. So Roland grabs Ajay’s drink and walks over to the group. He interjects himself in to conversation and proceeds to tell the other side of the story and forcing Van Owen to realize the consequences of his actions taken two years ago. After telling the tale, Roland sets the glass down and tells Van Owen that this one is on Ajay. Growing up I like both characters and twenty years later I really wish we could have gotten some kind scene where Nick realizes that his actions on Sorna lead to terrible things happening and who better to make him understand than his arch enemy.

One of the main reasons I've always liked Roland is because he was quite similar in a fashion to my father who was born and raised in Rhodesia. Since like Roland he fit that great white hunter stereotype, making Roland a very familar character for me to connect with (so to speak) as a child. That and my father was philosophical about hunting as well. He once compared displaying hunting trophies shot whilst the hunter was safe from danger as "like displaying toys bought off a shop shelf." Though I like Roland's laser satallite version better lol.

Roland Rembo is a legend. RIP Pete. Being 28, I can definitely appreciate Roland Tembo now. Years ago, much younger, understandably such a great character would be overlooked. I love everything that Tembo brings to the table. The morality & ethics. That he is a man of honor & code. Almost an unspoken rules thing, especially as as a hunter - a successful hunter. One of the best written characters in the franchise & in general. I love him & Iam Malcolm, who is my fave - Well, I think now Owen Grady is my fave. TLWP took a different & darker turn, which is I love it. Nick Van Owen is an awesome character, too. He wasn't a cookie cutter. I love that kind of protagonist. It certainly made sense to have such a character & square against Tembo. Okay, this long. Heh. Anyway, Ian Malcolm is my man & that jaded self was welcomed after what occurred in 1993 on Isla Nublar.

When I was 5 or 6, I recognized the names in the song and my dad told me that I was probably right. Something else that might interest you is that there is also a song called “Are You With Me, Dr. Wu”, and the album cover was a giant locust, which may have had something to do with Jurassic World: Dominion.

Everyone in the U.S.A. is entitled to an opinion, as granted by the First (1st) Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This is my personal opinion regarding the Jurassic Park/World franchise. All 4 (and eventually 5) sequels to Jurassic Park are certainly different. Each motion picture film can have criticism for individual roles or plots, but there is one thing I believe is immune to any criticism. In "The Lost World: Jurassic Park", we the viewers were given the opportunity to see perhaps the greatest actor who ever lived play the role of Roland Tembo. Pete Postlethwaite's performance is so dynamic compared to anyone else in the film. The only real grievance I have is that Roland wasn't given enough screentime, despite his prominent role. I've watched the movie several times and can't find any flaws in Pete's portrayal of a noble hunter with a strong moral compass and code of ethics. Not just this movie, but every acting job Pete ever had was so excellent; he truly took every acting task he did seriously and gave it his all, right to the very end of his life. (Doesn't matter what kind it is, cancer sucks 100% of the time.) My conclusion: Nobody should ever try to criticize the acting Pete Postlethwaite did in the second (2nd) Jurassic Park movie. I will stand strongly by this for as long as I live. Forever rest in peace, good sir. We humans were fortunate enough to know who you were.

So, watching this movie after not seeing it since it came out, my reading is that Ajay was basically Tembo’s life partner and his death changed everything for him. You can interpret life partner however you want but it says something good about Tembo that he has a deeply committed relationship with another person that involves mutual respect and appreciation and a kind of caring that makes him change his perspective when they die.

At a ranch somewhere outside of Mombasa, a young triceratops or pachycephalosaurus wanders onto the grounds. A few grounds keepers and staff try to herd it out but the animal stubbornly trudges on up to the porch of the house, sitting down right next to a man in a lounge chair. When one of them brings out a shotgun, the man in the chair waves off the house staff and starts petting the animal as it curls up and falls asleep. "I've taken plenty of naps on this porch, I can't blame a little baby for wanting to do the same." Roland then kicks his feet up and leans back in the chair, taking a nap alongside the baby dino.

Well that was interesting to hear about Roland...I haven't watched the first 3 JP movies in well over a decade...and I'm just getting back into my interest of the franchise, learning about the novels (which I never knew existed until recent times, even comic books that give us bigger views of different "hidden" events between, before, and even after different movies, the different sinks inGen cloned (I honestly thought all JP had was a Rex, Raptors, Brachios, Trikes, Stegos, etc...even in JW I was surprised to see the "variety" that was given to us), and so on. -A big thanks to you Klayton, haha at first I thought you were a clickbait channel less than maybe 3 weeks ago until I watched my first video all the way through and since then I've been ALL OVER the content you've produced, so again, big thumbs up to you man and I'm following in suit with the rest of your supporters! 👍

But I first saw this movie as a child he was my favorite character and I didn't even know why. He just stood out in the movie. My memory is a little faint but the Highlight part of the movie of him when I saw the child was when they were capturing dinosaurs out in the field.

Well Alan Grant probably died between the events of jurassic park 3 and jurassic world, if haven't already see Sam Neill's interview for his film wilderpeople it is in KZbin there when asked about his appearance in fallen kingdom he says "the problem is that no one knows where Alan Grant is"," "he has retired from paleontology and now he probably runs a successful Business somewhere in.......",and finally " *either that or he is dead* " so I don't see Alan returning so even though I would like to see him return I think that it just wouldn't happen so I would like you do a bit of research and make a video about Alan Grant's fate.(I want to post it in your other video but I was late) please like this so klayton can see!

My two favorite JP characters both have a lot in common, Muldoon,and Tembo. Both are White Africans, both are big game hunters, and both respect the Dinos more then everyone else in there teams. The differences is how they do their jobs, and how much personal honor they carry. It's certainly an interesting contrast.

You know, as a kid I never really cared much for Roland. I didn't particularly dislike him, nor did I really see him as a villain, but I was a fan of Van Owen. Since starting to watch your videos when you talk about him, I've realized that he's a much more complex and interesting character than I realized back then. I can't say he's my favorite character, but I do really love him. XD

I know this video came out 5 years ago and 2 Jurassic movies have released since then...and I can't remember if I said anything on here back then (and I did watch it back then). But I wanted to say that I've been a fan of Warren Zevon for a long time and when I found out that characters from The Lost World were based on a Warren Zevon song, it made me appreciate the movie even more. If I never made that comment, I'm sorry.

Great video once again!! I like Roland as a character in film and the actor, but I what I really wished they kept Dodgson and Dr.Levine in the story cause they had some interesting parts in the novel that I think would made the lost world a hole lot better. Still a fantastic film tho

Interesting. I used to think that Roland Tembo was just the book version of Robert Muldoon, but it appears he was based on a lot more than that. In the book, Muldoon is much more like Tembo, he’s extremely brave (almost foolhardy), doesn’t make any serious mistakes and lives to see sunrise. In the movie, he’s cautious but doesn’t take into account an elementary fact of velociraptors-they’re pack hunters and like to use one member as a distraction while the other two make the kill - and this is what gets him killed. For a guy who is supposed to know a lot about the creatures from observing their live behavior instead of dead fossils, the movie version of Muldoon knows much less about them than Alan Grant does.

I was wondering if you could do a video on Simon masrani and Masrani global. He seemed like a really fun character who should have had more screentime before he was killed off. His company seems to have become more like the novel version of Ingen since his death,viewing the dinosaurs as software by comparing them to phones. I thought that was a nice nod to the book. For someone so important to the lore,he seemed to have a rather minor role in the movie.That scene with the helicopter was cool but it should have been saved for a later film. I really thought he would be like the novel version of Hammond but he seemed like a nice [mostly]guy. It also seems strange that Masrani doe not seem to know about the spinosaurus. It also seems weird that Hammond's dying wish was to make jurassic park a reality when he made the gene guard act. It looks like he was written to be like the book version of Hammond but they changed it at the last minute.Maybe Lockwood will be like that. That would explain why his death has an ''evil ceo gets what he deserved vibe'' and why he does not care about cost in some parts of the movie but does not agree to kill the i rex because of much money it is worth. P.S this is my first time commenting on anythingso sorry for the wall of text.

One could also argue, Roland's choice in Rifles (the 600 Nitro Express), is a nod to L. Sprague De Camp's classic sci fi story 'A Gun For Dinosaur'.

When you think of the cast of The Lost World, you realize it was filled with some of the best actors of that era: Julianne Moore, Pete Postelthwaithe, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Stormare and for giggles Vince Vaughn. The cast definitely helped make The Lost World such a great movie.
