To those angry with this song, let me tell you a story about my family. My father fought for the Republic of South Vietnam against the communist and fortune did not favor the Republic. My father being a lieutenant colonel would face certain execution had he remained and my family would have been sent to re-education camp. With much hardship we were able to escape to the Philippine. There we waited for a country to take us in. Every country we approached turned us away...except America. Only America gave us refuge. Life in America was hard. My father, an officer, worked 2 menial jobs to put food on the table. Whatever time he had available, he took college classes and encouraged my mother to do the same. Eventually, he earned his engineering degree and my mother, and accounting degree. Slowly but surely, they attained their "American Dream". My father always reminded me to be grateful of this country and that one day I must repay our debt to her. Repaying of this debt is priority number one, so after attending Tulane University I joined the Army. I never saw combat. I did get my chopper lit up when we buzzed a "farm house" on the border of Czechoslovakia:). Looking back, I joined not just to repay a debt, but to defend the American way of life. The life to be as care free as you want. To be as counter culture as you want. To make as many songs about your dissatisfaction of the state of affair as you want. Soldiers died so you can speak freely. Soldiers died so you can sing freely. To be silent is to dishonored their sacrifices...so sing on...sing on...

During the cold war any day could turn into a hot war. Our adversaries had so many tanks and heavy weapons. The Germans have recounted to us the cruelties of the Russians. We have seen photos of the German troops fighting and holding grounds to open escape routes so that civilians can flee to allied area of occupation during WWII. We did not want that to happened in America to our fellow countrymen. I know that the men I served with were well trained, well motivated and very prepared to fight to the death and to win in Germany so that the invaders may never touch the shores of America.
