It’s nice but the cargo space is too small for me really. I was looking at a 4Runner but this seems like a better option with the v8... but the cargo space kills it for me so Land Cruiser still wins. Land Cruiser Prado/GX460 is just a little too small

Thanks for the shout out Texas Truck Channel! Great review of the Lexus GX460! You are correct - 99% of the GX460s out there will be driven by soccer mom's who don't care about things like hill ascent, hill descent, locking differentials or even know what Lo means (let alone how to engage it). But... for that 1% that want something they can take off road that has serious chops (and power and luxury) the GX460 is a venerable platform! Most people could simply replace the street tires with some ATs and tackle the majority of off road trails (definitely here in Texas). For those wanting more the off road bells and whistles are handy but the biggest challenge will be that overhanging grill. Most people choose to trim it or replace it entirely with an aftermarket bumper (like from CBI, Victory, ARB or MetalTech). If your viewers are truly interested in the GX as an overland vehicle they should consider (in order of customization): all terrain tires, body protection (sliders, bumpers, skid plates), suspension upgrades (suspension lift, control arms, shocks, etc), and then convenience items like roof racks, LED lights, rear-storage. They make amazing vehicles and I've loved off roading mine for the past several years!

@@kevinbreese5739 Thats not completely true. I have a rust free 2013 in the rust belt. The older Toyotas had some rust prone models. But the GX is no more prone to rust than anything else. It just depends who owns it, and how often they rinse it off. All vehicles are prone to rust when neglected.

I removed the third row seats and gained exactly 100 Lbs payload, plus some trunk space. And I can feel it’s more nimble. I suggest everyone remove the third row seats if you don’t need them.

Me as well. For a short time i was spoiled to have a flawless GX470 and GX460 parked in my garage side by side. Was painful to sell one. They're like quality guitars to me. I want to collect them 😄

I bought a used 2012 GX 460 in 2019. I bought one size larger K02 tires (31.6”) and a 2” lift. I then took it to the Hidden Falls off road park near Marble Falls Texas. When I got there, they asked what I was driving. I told them and the said I should stay on the 1-3 out of 5 difficulty trails and gave me a trail map. A few minutes on the trails and I threw the map into the back seat and just sent it! I know I went on level 4 trails, and maybe prt of one level 5 trail, with zero problems at all. Just one instance of wheel slip. I was amazed at what proper tires and a slight lift allowed it to do.

The 1UR has a forged crank and rods, roller rockers for the cams, hypereutectic pistons, etc. It's very similar to the 3UR and actually has multiple more advanced features than the 3UR (5.7). It's as robust as any V8 out there. You have to go 1-ton on most other pickups to get forged internals.

Thank you gentlemen. My wife and I are looking for a cross country/vehicle for going to the cabin in snow. Maybe light fire roads occasionally. I'm blown away that a new 4 runner is almost the same price as the GX new.

Some may think I'm stupid for being on my 3rd GX460 since 2015. Same color, every three years. My kids are so used to it. I'm thinking of the LX600 for my next one, however, if there's a new GX with V6-T like the LX, I'll be on my 4th GX...

The GX is for when the younger guys mature and decide that power, comfort and quiet have become priorities. What I don't understand is why anyone, young or older would pay more for a 4 runner. And I'm referring to buying used since I've yet to wear out any toyota product.

4 Hi is running TRAC only (which is an all-speed, limited slip brake-based system). 4Lo instantly activates ATRAC, which is the brake based LOCKER style system that tolerates much less wheel spin and works far better. Also, those stock tires are HOT GARBAGE.

Next to the Land Cruiser. 200 series, this is the best truck money can buy. Yes, if you have millions of dollars there is no more capable of reliable durable, luxurious daily driver than you can get except for the Land Cruiser.

I guess you didn’t see the hill test? We found it’s limits in stock form. The GX is highly capable, and with tires alone it’s killer. When we said it’s made for soccer moms we are referring to the majority of its buyers are more impressed with its Lexus levels of luxury than they are impressed with its off road chops. Disabling the traction control also disabled the limited-slip TRAC system that Toyota brilliantly engineered. 4LO enables the brake-locker ATRAC. Locked center recalibrates ATRAC to be even more aggressive. This is all in the manual and quick start guide. 👍

We do use the tools that every rig has to offer. We just start with the least amount of tools and work our way up to show how effective each tool is. This separates the marketing from the engineering.

I don't really get you hill test, or its purpose. Is it intended to test the tires? because this definitely does not test vehicle's off road capabilities. If you put any AT rubber on it, it would climb it without a drop of sweat.

While a better tire would certainly help, it would not fully solve the hill test. Go check out our GMC AT4X for an example of a good tire on the hill that still struggles. Our hill test primarily tests approach and break over angles, plus a vehicles traction control systems, and of course the overall abilities of these systems/lockers/ and tires. Our simple looking hill test manages to test factory rigs very well.
