Yall are sleeping on The Batman. Easily the best version of Gotham City we have ever seen. Its so nice to see a truly dark grim feeling city after the Nolan trilogy where gotham just felt like another random city in America. Great movies, but Reeves has absolutely nailed the vibe we need for an extended batman universe. Edit: Also I love that Penguin basically gets his own Jason Todd lol. Jason was trying to steal a wheel off the batmobile when him and batman first met. Victor's a fun spin on that i like it.

The Batman is the absolute closest any movie has ever reached in getting the same feeling as reading a Batman mini series, straight out of a comic. Not a surprise they don't like as much since they are not avid readers. Despite Eric's passionate defenses that he was once a reader and his love for the Animated Series, those are not the comics. Matt Reeves' film is a comic brought to life. What truly baffles me is when people say that Reeves' vision is too grounded when, to me, it is substantially more fantastical than Nolan's uber-realistic version ever was.
@lockekappa5002 ай бұрын
Can you explain in what ways The Batman is more "fantastical" than Nolan's? Sure, I can see that Batman is shot as more of a mythical being than in Nolan's, but the tone alone makes The Batman much more grounded imo. I think tone sets the standard for everything that is happening in the world.
@akshayhere2 ай бұрын
Are you serious? The Batman is much more realistic than Nolan's ever was.
@williamsundesten43272 ай бұрын
@@akshayhere The Batman has a more comic book vibe and feel to it and is closer to the source material, I think that’s what he meant
@akshayhere2 ай бұрын
@@williamsundesten4327 Umm, TDK literally pulled a lot from the Long Halloween. The source material has itself has had many contradictions too.
@Dan_G.R.S.2 ай бұрын
What I mean by The Batman being more fantastical is a mix of many things. The dialogue and structure of the story just has that comic book flair that Nolan's just doesn't. It feels like reading a long miniseries. The art direction and cinematography likewise. Nolan's movies have this ultra realistic photography and dialogue that treat everything that's happening as if it was a real life event. Greig Fraser's version of Gotham does not feel like a real place, it feels constructed to be in a movie, that's a positive thing to me. Nolan's is a lot more sci-fi with the gadgets and vehicles, sure, but in the internal rules of that universe they are all treated as perfectly logical. I sincerely argue that Pattinson's Batmobile is a more campy and fantastical adaptation than all of Nolan's hard sci-fi military vehicles combined. I love Nolan and his movies, I just couldn't care less about his Batman ones.
@zedxx2 ай бұрын
I think what Eric was trying to say at 29:00 is that The Penguin is a character-driven narrative, as opposed to most comic movies having plot-driven narratives. The Penguin also uses third-person limited POV, which is why the camera stays with him all the time and we don't jump into scenes where other characters interact among themselves without him (which is third-person omniscient POV).

Both Gotham and the arrow show started off as very grounded and serious tone but as both shows went on they welcomed the fantastical nature of characters and story elements from the comics. Gotham felt like it belonged in Joel Schumacher universe with theatrical elements of villains and characters. This show which in the Reeves universe feels to lean more towards grounded comics of Batman like earth one so this show feels more like an original drama crime series rather than a superhero show. It feels to take itself more seriously than Gotham and arrowverse, everything from the writing, the acting, the way it’s filmed.
