Great video Clay, the takeaway is so important and I still see so many golfers doing this and pulling the club inside every week. From there it's just a series of compensations to fix the initial problem. This video is something they need to watch. Cheers

This was a fantastic tip. I love the way you explained the take away. I believe this is one of my swing faults. I will try these tips. Keep the good ideas rolling.

Great video. I say this because this is THE most important thing it took me two years to learn. Makes all the difference in the world!

Okay, now I'm scared. I've been going through your courses and I had to stop because my backswing was a disaster, going way inside and as you said I was coming way over the top. So I spent most of yesterday looking for solutions. So it's like you knew I was looking. Thanks!

Excellent video Clay on the Takeaway! This is exactly the move that I have gone to and it is definitely working. Right now, I am having more success with the driver and fairway woods than I am with the irons. It seems like occasionally a "top" occurs with the fairway woods and "thin" shots with the irons. I feel like this may be a ball position or rotational problem. It definitely has given me distance though!!

we have heard a lot about keeping the club outside the hands in the backswing etc. but, this theory is easily disproven. the textbook tells us that the club should arc into a position where it is parallel to the target line. the text book may not tell us how to do this correctly; but, nonethless it does tell us to get into this position. and, if you just simply swing the club back into this position, with just your left hand on the club, and wait a while, you will find that pressure will build up in the heel pad of your hand, and the downwards pressure on the club will then continue the club on its arc. and, this is a key component of the golf swing. the outside movement of the hands, that you demonstrate, is caused by a downwards rotation of the left wrist. one drill that may help to prevent this is to simply hold the club out to the left, with your left hand, align the face with target and put your right hand on the club as you swing back. but, of course, it would, also, be essential to not make a downward rotation of your left wrist in the waggle, when addressing the ball. the key is to press the heel pad of the left hand to the left to waggle the club back, and to press in with the joint of the wrist to return the club to the ball- and, resist against the wrist joint with the heel pad as it returns the club to the ball. do that and the hands will never move outside their address position, in the takeaway.

Hi Clay, I am following your channel and find your tips always helpful. One topic I am looking for is a lesson on tips/teachings and exercises how to not open up the wrists too early on the downswing? Do you know what I mean? This classic mistake so many of us do to open too soon and then “spoon” the ball rather then hit into it? Maybe could can make a video on it, just a suggestion…many thanks and keep up the good work!

I agree that the takeaway is so important because doing it wrong will cause many issues in the rest of the swing. I’m curious why you didn’t show a face on view of it. I think what you’d see is that when you do it wrong, the club gets far behind the hands very early. Causes the club to get too far behind you, and your body then wants to go over the top to correct it

Will lie and or wrist angles make the release hard to square up
