The Butterfly Effect- Plant-based Weight Loss

The Butterfly Effect- Plant-based Weight Loss

Жыл бұрын

My name is Heather and I'm from Portland, Oregon. I am eating a plant-based, whole foods, unprocessed diet, with no sugar, oil, flour or alcohol, to take off weight and regain my life. I once weighed over 436 lbs and have released over 110 lbs eating this way and walking for exercise. I call my channel The Butterfly Effect because I believe that all the small choices you make, over time, add up and have a huge effect on your life. I wanted to show people like me who have 100, 150, 200 or more pounds to take off that it can be done and we can do it together. I am far from perfect and have struggled with compulsive eating and been overweight for all of my life, but there is hope for me and there is hope for you too. What can you do, today, to bring you closer to your goals tomorrow? Please consider giving my videos a thumbs up, commenting and subscribing. I would be incredibly grateful for your support on this journey!

I am glad you decided to post one day a week, rather than more often. That is a form of self care. Setting boundaries , knowing our limits , not going forward like a locomotive as your just coming back. I missed you and I'm grateful you are back, I would love to be supportive any way I can as a part of your youtube family. I have been on a no sugar food plan and eating weighed or measured food ,staying non processed, not vegan though. It has been easier to eat healthy the longer I eat healthy( if that makes sense). The no sugar is a huge factor in my lack of these type of cravings. So I am jumping on your 100 day till 2023 commitment. I LOVE having some buddies on this channel to feel like Im part of something bigger than myself interest. Yay! So sign me up . I will see you next Wednesday with bells on..😉👍

Thanks for posting, Heather. I miss seeing you in person at conferences! I admire your bravery to openly disclose your challenges. I've been giving myself leeway using the excuse that I am having a very unexpected thyroid removal surgery on Oct. 4th. The surgery and cancer diagnosis has me anxious and upset. Fortunately I've been feeling fine and able to keep exercising. After I get through the surgery and initial recovery I hope to eliminate some of the food choices that have crept back in.

Yes~let’s focus on what we’re doing well…no more “be perfect or it doesn’t count”👎 I’ll join you with eating more greens beans veggies starches fruit etc…edging out the things that actually steal from our joy! At the moment I’m letting a lot of things sneak back in so I’m glad you’re talking about this. I’m joining you for the next 100 days…well about 97 of them🙃 It’s my birthday🥳weekend…I’m not going crazy but I’m not getting back on track until Tuesday🤦‍♀️ I struggle as much as you do Heather and I’m so grateful that we never give up…we keep trying to do better and I’m especially grateful that we desire in our hearts to do better no matter how many times we fall. Thank You for sharing your journey, your hopes and dreams your slip’s your falls…you share it all (you’re just a real girl trying to live her best life)…it definitely helps me want to go forward and not give up on mine🌻 You are an absolutely beautiful person Heather from the inside~out🦋 You radiate pure love🙌

Dear Heather, my Butterfly Lady! Speaking of vegan analog products, I have devised a couple things I really love and use a lot from a youtuber "Cookin wiv Roy" that possibly you (and others) could enjoy. I guess during WWII and its meat shortages the government was experimenting with non-meat recipes! He gives this breakfast sausage recipe and a vegan take on his grandma's meatloaf, which we really love. Both are delicious and economical. I thank you for doing your channel and wish you the best of everything!

Hi Heather, I’ve had lots of stress lately and I’ve gone back to unhealthy eating. I only started the plant based no oil, sugar, salt or flour way I’d eating since last April, I’ve lost about 2 stone but I have 6 stone to lose. I agree about not being rigid, I have salt and pepper on my air fried potatoes and I have some other items but not very often. I’m trying to get back on track, so I’m with you Heather. I’m doing this with you, let’s try not to be so hard on ourselves. The vegan junk food is a strong pull as it’s so tasty, but they do make me gain weight also. I’m just going to stay away from those and I will do it for 100 days with you and I’ll post and be honest about how I’m doing. If that puts pressure on you, just say. I’d just like to support you as you’ve supported us .

Thanks for posting. Great to set yourself a goal for the next 100 days. This came at a good time for me. I slipped big time yesterday. It was a year since my father in law died and a special ceremony was held for him, but also there was lots of non compliant food and I gave in to temptation. When I got up this morning it was so nice to see this video and get encouragement to put that behind me and get back on track. Please do post once a week, not only for our benefit but also for yours. Heather, nice to see you back. I recently started with a weight loss coach. I went WFPB on my own with guidance only from online sources like Dr's. McDougall, Barnard, Esselstyn, Lysle, Chef AJ and you. Lots of great info. I lost 28 pounds, but got stuck and then started gaining. I never had real guidance. So, I joined a coaching program and lost another 18 pounds since April. Have about 8 to go. My goal is to get my cholesterol to a healthy range. Simple 50/50 plan veggies and starch. Simple meals. .5 to 1 C beans per day, no more than 1 oz. Nuts. Of course no oil or processed foods. They have a mindset coach and a dietitian. Let me know on my Instagram if you want their info. Kudos to you for not giving up.

Hiya Heather, happy to see u again. I think, we make the mistake of saying "food addiction", but i find it is "PROCESSED food addiction". like Chef AJ says, "no one got unhealthy or chubby from eating too much kale, or being addicted to kale, etc.. I wasn't able to be successful, til finding her at age 66, now 70 & lost the 100lbs & maintaining for over a yr now. It is still a big experiment to me tho, i can't let my guard down. I NEVER want to go back there, i was nearly bed & hse bound, at only 239 lbs, am only 5'1" tall. Anyway, i do have a small health & wellness & weight loss channel, ok, enough of me, So glad u are ok, always worry when don't see some one for a while. Take care & sending lots love & 🙏🙏🥰🥰💪💪

Perfection paralysis! Yes I know that one well. If I didn’t hit my goal 100% for eating or exercise I feel like oh well I already messed up why bother. Not good. I’m struggling with exercise right now. I went through breast cancer treatment during the pandemic. So after radiation and 4 surgeries I am still struggling with stamina. Obviously I can’t do the kind of workouts I used to do and that is upsetting. But even if I can’t do that I still need to move in some way to get my stamina back. I am starting DDP Yoga again just starting with the beginner workouts. I can go at my own pace and do modifications for the moves I can’t do.

Hey Heather! It's so good to see you back! I watched all of your old videos and really enjoyed them because you have such a great sense of humour and seem so incredibly honest. I am transitioning from a carnivore diet to become vegan (for health & weight loss reasons). It's way harder than I thought it would be, so I really appreciate your comments and thoughts about this journey. I also appreciate your recipes - you are very creative! Loved the sushi sandwich you invented with a large chunk of nori and rice inside. I realize now that I have been a food addict my whole life. I was ashamed of that, until I realized that there are so many people with so many different kinds of addictions (alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, street drugs, prescription drugs, porn, social media, etc, etc). I RECENTLY went to a lecture that was a requirement by the bariatric clinic where I am being treated. The Dr wrote in HUGE letters on the white board: "IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!" (I got a big lump in my throat and almost cried when I saw that, because I am SO HARD on myself!!) And he proceeded to lay out why it's not our fault - our food supply has been tampered with and is full of chemicals, some of it is genetics, and a lot of it is socialization - it's the best way we found to comfort ourselves growing up and so it's very ingrained. But it's still up to us to take responsibility for our lives - stop the blame - and make a new plan to get us where we want to go on our journey. And since data is the best way to measure our progress, I have decided on the top 5 things I want to measure, and I am tracking these things every day. (Food log, blood pressure, salt intake, steps.) I have set up a graph for each one & I review goals for 5 minutes at the beginning and end of each day. I am reading Atomic Habits by James Clear & it has given me terrific perspective. And I will gladly jump on your 100-day band wagon! Cheers - so glad you are back!! -Kat RM

The world is full of colours. And that is beautiful. Butterflies are colourful and so beautiful! So why thinking in black and white any longer? Did you ever think of which plant based food you really, really like? I am glad, that I really love fruits and vegetables. But for example I don't like celery. That's why I won't eat it. And I love flavourful food. No artificial flavours, but the taste of different spices etc.. You said something interesting: You stop eating, when you are done with the entertainment of eating. May I ask you, if eating totally without salt and oil is really "entertaining"? I use herbs and spices mainly for good flavours. But I don't condemn a small amount of salt. The same with oil. There really is no need to use hughe amounts of oil. But a litte bit of it makes a difference for me tastewise in some of my recipes. Not all of them. If you are really, really happy with the way you want to eat: go for it. You are obviously unhappy eating vegan junkfood. That's why it is great, you want to change that. But for example a small amount of oil in a dressing might help to make salads so much more tasty....my point of view.... not necessarily yours. I know, Chef AJ etc. all prefer the oilfree version of a plant based diet. But I think everybody should experience, if huge portions of greens without salt an oil are the great "entertainment" or like in my case if the flavourful kitchen like for example Nisha of Rainbowplantlife creates her recipes, gives me much more satisfaction. Only when I allow myself to have 100 % delicious and nourishing food not only today, but also tomorrow and the next day...always...I can stop craving on anything, espcially food, that doesn't give any value to my body. Stick to your veggies, if you really love them! Focusing on the good things makes it often much easier that to focus on the things we "should not want to have". In my case they faded away, when I gave my body enough of the things I really, really love. All the best wishes to you from Germany!

But I’m back on track and it’s not easy but I realize it’s not really on a diet anymore it must be a lifestyle so girlfriend I got your back and I’ll be watching and seeing how you progress I know it’s not easy nothing is easy we’re food attics we yo-yo on different programs all the time. But this way of eating is really simple and easy but I don’t beat myself up over it anymore I’m too old for that I hope you have a beautiful evening

You have a way of brightening up my day. Are there any studies that prove sugar in itself is addictive? I know the chemicals used in most processed are. I have never seen anyone eat sugar right from the bowl, or hide sugar, or any of the other behaviors associated with true addictions. I'm talking about sugar itself. It has to be the chemical additives.

Deprivation and/or constant focus on what I am eating is the biggest issue that I dealt with for many years. My addiction appeared to be to food, but actually, it was to thinking about weight loss, what I should be doing, what I wasn't doing, how to fix myself once and for all and that went on for soooo many years with diets, a lapband, etc. It wasn't until I stopped doing that because I truly realized it was what kept me fat and kept me in the cycle of lose 20lbs, gain 25lbs back every year for more than 25 years. I have lost and kept off more than 55lbs in the past 15 years by focusing on my stressful thinking (I use The Work of Byron Katie) and that has helps me. The relationship I have with myself is the one that I was able to change for the better and that is what has been the biggest gift of all. Unconditional self love that I didn't even know was an issue or even possible. I'm not at a perfect weight, but I truly love myself without condition and have a happier life at 59 then I ever dreamed of all the years I was focused on my size. I wish you peace and a loving relationship with yourself above all else.

I feel like I’ve worn out the restart button 😢 I m good all day and bamn after dinner I’m a snackaholic Digging into my family’s treats. Every day I say I won’t do it. I eat more during the day to avoid it but still do it. Any suggestions?

I used to be all or nothing. What helped me or rather my mindset was watching videos by Chelsea Mae Cullen and following the idea of small changes consistently implemented leading to big results over time. I have been able to become comparatively fearless of trip ups and cravings, etc Also, I have recently learned about ADHD and its connection to eating disorders like binge eating for reasons of needed dopamine, which makes just so much sense in my case and has helped me to actively working on finding dopamine in other ways than food

Maybe I’m off base but I feel like you’re trying to do what you think you should do rather than what works for you. I also don’t understand veganism if it’s not about animals. That’s why most vegans can stick to it - because it’s not a diet thing. All that eating clean and this and that sounds stressful to me.

You are right that it is an ethical decision for me, but not only for the animals. Respect for all life is my driver. Animal agriculture is not only cruel and promoting needless suffering, cruelty, and death, but is also responsible for environmental devastation, resulting in climate instability and the horrific storms and wild fires and all the mayhem and sorrow in their path. And if you were in my place: with 200 lbs to lose, early heart disease, in a protracted battle with cancer, would you not choose the cleanest, most therapeutic diet? The one that you had more success with releasing weight than any other, and also enjoyed restored health and function in the recent past? I am simply going with the most evidence-based and proven approach, the one that aligns with my values and makes me feel good. As far as being stressful, it is very stressful to be sick. It is very stressful to be 300 lbs and feel stuck and depressed and lonely. All the choices are hard--I just choose the hard that has the hope of delivering me from the misery I am in.
