People just assume that a monopoly is bad without even thinking about why. Imagine having alien technology and being a company that makes the best computers by far and sells them at a very low price. Everyone buys your computers, but one day the government comes and tells you that you are a monopoly and you must sell your company so that your competitors can sell more of their inferior and expensive products. That is anti-capitalist, it limits progress and goes against the customer's freedom of choice, since we voluntarily decide whether or not to buy/use a product. Like when we all decided NOT to use Internet Explorer even though it came pre-installed.

They are not getting punished for being a monopoly. They are getting punished for using their influence to manipulate the market and create an anti-competitive environment. An example is imagine having an alien technology and since you already have far superior tech you want way higher profit so in order to achieve that first you have to get rid of other accessible options. So, you participate in behind the scene deals and market manipulations to crash your competition instead of competing in a manner which would force each side to invest more in their tech. This is what google has been doing for over a decade. Epic Games vs Google lawsuit already proved lots of market manipulations done by Google so this is not surprising to me at all.

Secondly, I see nothing wrong with using their influence to manipulate the market, unless they have agreements with the government, since the government can use coercion to force its citizens to use the services of this company. Perfect if someone pays a lot of money to advertise on TV for as long as they can afford it, or if they buy smaller competitors, or if Google pays to be the default search engine, I'm fine with that as long as no one forces me to use it no matter what. If you have a bad product, no matter how much you invest in advertising, you will not be successful. After all, Google is so rich and successful because many people voluntarily decide to give them money, surely because it's worth it to them.

So in order for company to become its own company, they would need to: 1) Have lots of investors invest billions of dollars in the future of a new company with no record. 2) Chrome would need to get a lot of debt (like billions) to pay off Google. 3) A combination of #1 and #2. #1 I think is almost completely unworkable, who will be investing the billions of dollars and just wait to see if Chrome succeeds on its own or not? Either way, as its company and without a huge company like Apple and Microsoft to fund them, they would face immense pressure to generate revenue, and how is a browser supposed to generate revenue? Create their own search engine? Add ads next to all websites? I think it would be doomed to fail

One thing Microsoft had to do for the EU is show a "browser ballot" that let you pick which browser you want to use, instead of automatically coming with Internet Explorer. I imagine Google might have to do that for the search engine in Chrome, instead of defaulting to Google search.

One of the biggest issues I see with removing Chrome from under Google is the fact that the world is moving to software a service. Google Chrome is at the forefront given it is the largest browser. JavaScript and its behavior varies from browser to browser without Google's input this could cause a huge disruption as the standard would not be driven by Google. The government would have its interest best served by forcing Chrome not to default to Google for searches and not allowing Google to pay for forced installation on other vendors hardware.

What other search engines? That's the problem: if everybody is *only* using Google, because it's the *only* search engine getting any visibility, then other search engines will die out. And if they die out, it will be very hard to form any sort of competition against Google, and so they will have the ability to do anything they want with impunity, no matter how unethical: for example, hiding all results that might give people a view of the world anywhere right of where Mao would be on the political compass.

google chrome as a browser is so popular because it works..has its problems but lets not forget that google was the one to bring extensions and web engine stability to the world. i do not use firefox because as a web developer i find their tooling disgusting. edge is just chrome with a different skin, as for other browsers there is no reason for me to trust them with my passwords and shit. the use gvnmt, like many other governments is comprised of tech noobs that have no clue how things work. if i were google i would destroy it before selling .
