In an interview about playing Zeus ,Russell Crowe told how he had asked what would be the accent ,trying to hold out for English with a Greek accent. Management said just the usual Mid American would be fine . Crowe insisted and the compromise was that he should do every one of his scenes twice ,one in each accent ,they would trial it and end up with the one audiences preferred. Greek it was ,but Crowe did twice the work for the same salary!

Why does nobody ever talk about The Rite? It's such an underrated movie! Critics didn't like it cause "it wasn't scary". It's like people need jump scares to feel anything anymore. The movie was outstanding and Russell Crowe needed a bounce back movie badly. Best exorcist movie I've seen in a long time and even the CGI was great. I've always been a fan of his acting that's why there's no surprise this movie was solid. How about the acting of Daniel Zovatto who played Father Esquivel. Saw it at a press screening last week here in Sweden. And I sort of agree with you. About 70% is the same old thing we have seen before. Can I ask a question? Are jump scares not wanted or good anymore? Not being mean or weird just trying to understand. I have seen this sentiment a few times before about jump scares being a bad thing? Is it because people think they are cheap? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time!
@beatsfromtheheart91
@beatsfromtheheart91 Жыл бұрын
@@Sooch900 you pretty much answered the question with your question. At this point jump scares have been so popularized and drawn out, that they have become predictable and as you said cheap. Don’t get me me wrong when done right, they can be effective but when you are a dedicated horror fan that watches high numbers of horror films you can perfectly point out when it’s going to happen before it happens which induces an eye roll. Lol At least that’s my take on it. others could view it completely differently. That’s the beauty of art.
@amerikaOnFire
@amerikaOnFire Жыл бұрын
@@Sooch900 Much like fart jokes and such are considered some of the lowest bar form of comedy, jump scares is the lowest bar form of horror. It's "easy" to fill your movie with jump scares constantly and call the movie a horror movie. But in reality it's just somebody you don't know is there tapping you on the shoulder and yelling "boo" in your ear all movie. Jump scares are not taboo to use, but they are constantly overused. True horror should be rounded out with things like providing a consistent atmosphere, pacing, sometimes existential horror where the situation makes the viewer anxious for the situation or characters and even good old fashion blood/gore can be used effectively (that is another thing that can be overdone as much as jump scare). So it's very easy to write a movie full of jump scares and call your movie "horror". It's not very easy to write a movie where the sense of absolute horror, loss, tension anxiety is palpable during the viewing experience due to what the characters see, can't see, feel etc. and how it's conveyed on screen. I'm sure somebody else can explain it better and probably add more details, but this is my view on what separates jump scare cheapness from actual horror.

It isn't, though. Anyone with more than a passing interest in film appreciates it. If you read this comment, perform a cursory search of it on the Internet - or even just on KZbin. It's understandable why the public may have been initially dismissive of it. It's the third in a series in which the second film happened to be one of the strangest sequels made (but not in a so-bad-it's-good way) (which is interesting, as it's director, John Boorman, happens to be very talented and crafted one of my favorite films, Excalibur).

It’s weird the Catholic Church believes it should make other Christians Catholic for salvation . The Catholic Church is ultra dark and shady. They have a telescope with the name of l..Ucifer and there is a video of their Latin mass where someone is singing in laying and saying he is god and Jesus is his son . St. Peter’s basilica has a weird meaning when you look it up as to what that means , the building is shaped like a snake and easy to see from arial view . I have met some priests say you have to power to get rid of negative Entities yourself actually , movies put a weird emphasis on this stuff as if you are hopeless .

Paris has ultra dark and shady history, Tokyo has ultra dark and shady history, the U.S.'s not even 1,000 years old yet and has some of the darkest and shadiest history out there. So I would not say that the Church is singularly worse than other long lived groups in our world, but I do think that by it's mission, the Church should hold itself to a higher standard and it has failed many times to do that by (lack of) virtue of the people that run it. Unfortunately, seats of influence eventually attract those with bad intentions, but the mission of the Church has always been to unite all peoples in and through Jesus' message of love for God and neighbor.

My best friend Paolo had no accent, he spoke better English than me. Americans think there's only one accent and it must be the one they've seen in movies lol. The film wasn't scary, and I don't think it ever tried to be. The scary parts came during the end, when the demon showed his power and performed miracles. This film is above average of the standard exorcist film. And I completely agree that it is way more entertaining than expected. However, I have to disagree with the acting of Alex Essoe. For me it was extremely jarring how sedated her character was, especially in contrast with the actor who plays her daughter. At times it almost felt that the roles were reversed, or that maybe the mother needed to take some Magnesium pills. I didn’t expect her to be chewing the scenery or yelling all the time, but the energy, tone of voice and overall emotion that you would expect for that role, the mother fell flat and underwhelming. I also really look forward to a sequel. After Top Gun Maverick, I welcome more films that are about having fun instead of drawn out ultra depressing stories.

I originally thought they were going to make a sequel once I got closer to the end, but after it said that he died in 2016 (Gabrielle, the Priest), I think that seals the deal that this is just going to be a standalone film, unless there's a spin off series about his right-hand priest, which could be interesting.

The most frightening part about the exorcism movies is that there’s already a the original “The Exorcist” remake in the process and it’s filled with inclusive characters, to say it softly … and we all let this happen

Well done Master Chris Stuckmann‼️ Back over 2 million!! I am both happy and proud of you!! Much L♥️VE to you, you lovely wife Sam, and the mini Stuckmanns‼️‼️ While I have not read this book, I do know, Father Gary Thomas, who is the subject of the book, that was the basis for the film, “The Rite”. In the film he is played by Sir Anthony Hopkins. I actually know him very well. When he was working on the book with the author, more so when he got back from Budapest, I asked if he thought that was weird. He said you could never be too careful. Five being a man of faith, Catholic Christian, faith, I believe him. I have seen some disturbing things. And from his tales, not that he’s all that talking about them; he’s a very honest guy. He is also a great human being. Again, I’m glad to see you doing in your career; that wind is catching your sails and is taking of behind the camera, as a screenwriter, and in life‼️ You are surely fire‼️🫶🏻♨️♨️♨️✊🏼

Another thing, the emphasis on the the clergy and then the Spanish Inquisition gave it some nice depth and context that other films with priests don’t bother with

It isn't a horror movie and it really doesn't try to be. It throws out a few cliches for those whose who expect that, but ultimately it is a conversational movie about evil, sin, and ultimately forgiveness. It approaches those topics beautifully and reminds the viewer that even though Jesus has forgiven us, we open the door to darkness when we continue to hold onto that guilt. This is why it becomes personal for Father Amorth and Father Esquibel as they are forced to confront past sins and traumas. Everything else in the story is a structure built around this very Christian and very biblical conversation. I found it quite challenging for me as a Christian as well as entertaining as a movie. I agree that in terms of the production, Russell Crowe was amazing. He is a blast to watch as this character, and if you watch interviews about it you see that Crowe also greatly respects the real Father Amorth. I appreciated your review, but it really missed the mark by ignoring the conversation at the heart of the movie.

There is a sense of confirmation after watching this and you listed my 3 favorite exorcism themed movies of all time: E1, E3 and Emily Rose. And you're correct with the "pile" of movies but I'd like to list a few "honorable mentions" that I think set themselves apart from the mass production: Deliver Us From Evil (also based off real events (Emily rose) and leads us through the eyes of a skeptic/agnostic that began with an event with a marine in the Iraq War). Devils Due (an exorcism movie produced in the same context as the Paranormal franchise). These two are interesting in their own rights and I enjoy watching them while we wait for THE one to beat them all. I look forward to seeing this. I will watch a movie with a blank slate - all the time with suspended belief. But necks spinning around to the point of severing the spinal cord: why did Damian Karras die from his stairway demise and Regan not die from her, literal, internal decapitation? I mean, hers was just prolonged over a course of a few weeks. Or "adult" voices (with large amounts of mature bass or monstrous sounds) coming out of children's vocal cords puts a pause on my "suspended belief" initiative. Personally, I'd be more disturbed hearing backwards-aramaic coming from a child with their natural kid vocals than I would "Sauron" coming from their heads. I think that's what made Emily Rose successful because of Jennifer Carpenters recording in her own voice with vocal edits added in post-edit....but we still heard Jennifer in the effect...and she is brilliant in that movie.

I was really positively surprised to see a movie review from you. I didn't enjoy the movie but I knew you would have some fresh perspective. Still, I found this movie to be having some troubling tendencies, especially concerning mental health. A person with psychosis is easily healed by a placebo when in reality they probably would have relapsed after a short while. As someone who places high value in the difficult and well earned education of psychotherapists I always find it kind of condescending when movies make if look like you just have to be a very kindhearted person to fix someone else's mental problems. I also could not shake the feeling that this movie actively avoided the topic of sexual abuse of little boys and replaced it with a story about an abused woman (which according to the church is still the only acceptable gender for the desires of a man). I may read into that last part a little too much and would be happy to hear another perspective on this. I must also criticize (and even if it is a little detail, it still seems sloppy and makes me question the amount of thought or attention to detail put into this movie) the continuity error of Father Esquibels ear. The scene of Henry biting a piece out if it seemed so weirdly specific that it stayed with me till the end of the movie where Esquibels ear seemed to be perfectly fine, not even a bandage or anything. As if the movie just wanted a shocking scene, but did not in fact want pretty Father Esquibel to look ugly for the oh so obviously teased prequels.
