The Power of Grayscale - Colorless Control in Historic - Mtg Arena Deck Tech and Game Play

It's finally time to give Colorless control another shot in historic. With the addition of big daddy Ugin in M21, as well as a Palladium Myr reprint, we may finally have enough ramp in order to power out some powerful colorless planeswalkers. We have the Ugin twins and the Karn brothers holding down the fort. And we have Platinum Angel to prevent us from losing the game. We also get to utilize our new favorite artifact from M21, Mazemind Tome.
So let's dust off all the old artifacts in Historic and see what we can pull together.

you didn’t need to grab the spyglass with karn to shut down golos. i’m not sure if you were doing it just in case of removal but karn doesn’t let opponents activate artifact abilities.

Oh My Word, your cat is named Jynx (That's how we spelt her name) as well? what a coincidence! I built this version of the deck but changed up a couple cards to cover what I didn't have, added in Crucible of worlds, 2 salvager of ruins, 2 Crystalline Giants, Bonders Enclave, Detection Tower, Labyrinth of Skophos, Mobilized District, 2 field of the dead. Again, really enjoying it and the cat added a nice little break in the middle of the video lol Awesome work!

Great deck. I play a black version with Solemns for ramp instead of shards and mainly to have access to removal.

I tested something similar but changed Karn the great creator for fae of wishes and included chromatic orrery to be able to cast ultimatums and other stuff from the sideboard, it's not perfect but was pretty fun

Deck wants more Crucible. Also I noticed in the Afro is game the auto rapper avoided using the land that gains you life when casting pw. It was extra noticeable because you were trying to stabilize at a lower life total. Overall though I was really impressed with the amount of passive life gain it has to help against the aggro decks between land and tomes.

Well, you still gain life with the land in play. You dont have to use those lands to cast the planeswalkers in order to gain life.

You should have one Big Ugin on the sideboard for karn to pick it up, so its like playing 7 of them in a way :D Also Ratchet bomb would work, atleast on the side.

Ratchet bomb is a good idea. However you cant grab ugin with karn as hes not an artifact

For standard you would probably need to dip into a color or two for a decent build. Green gives you ramp replacements for Mindstone and Powerstone Shard (Arboreal Grazer, Goose, Paradise Druid, etc) as well as Nissa, which should speak for itself. You could also go DImir for Tezzeret, which gets pretty wild. Mystic Forge is notably absent from Motumbo's build, you might consider slotting that in as well. Adding basics means you could play Solemn Simulacrum and Field of Ruin.

Idk man, Ugin the Spirit boi is not fun. It hasn't even been a week and i'm already sick of him. Agent was also banned because it screwed the diversity of decks. Now a good chunk of the decks are just engaged in a race to Ugin.

@@Motumbo that is the problem of standard. And you could make the same argument in historic. There are so many pending issues that become huge problems every new set. I mean, why play other stuff when you could pull a turn 5 Ugin instead of a wrath? Ugin is so powerful that is going to eat up a chunk of the brewing space for decks.

@@droopsnoot26 A lot of the ramp is out with rotation (Nissa, Growth Spiral, Grazer) and shock lands gone with em. Doubt WotC will make any Ugin plans before that.
