The Prince R380: Japan’s First Prototype Race Car
During Japan’s post-war recovery in the 1950s, few could have predicted the nation’s eventual dominance in the automotive industry and motorsport. You see In these early years, Japanese car manufacturers produced modest, practical vehicles primarily tailored for the domestic market. But by the early 1960s, things began to change. Ambition surged, driving carmakers to craft vehicles aimed not just for local roads but global markets. Motorsport became a focal point for this transformation, and few cars epitomize Japan’s racing spirit better than the Prince R380-a groundbreaking machine that became the country’s first purpose-built prototype race car.

Totally new to me, thanks. The first shown R-380 has a little of the Porsche 904's lines as well.

Yeah- Ferrari 250 LM and Porsche 904 got busy and had a baby. Nice looking cars. Combined with Honda RA272, etc, Japan had competitive open-wheel cars as well. Rich motorsport history there as well.

Not surprising Ferrari didn't object since it looked more like Porsche 904. The only Porsche 906 at the 1966 Japanese was 2 sec faster than the R380 and a DNF is the only thing that prevented it from winning.

Beautiful sports prototype, especially the swoopier MkII version. I don't see it as being any more derivative than other mid-engined prototypes of the time.

Thanks Chris for another good video 😅 didn't think Japan could build a Le Man style car, can't remember if you said the engine was in the back, and if what transaxle did it run?

Too bad that more effort wasn’t put into the R380 II. It certainly had the look.

Of course, if you’re going into racing for the first time it’s wise to derive from successful race cars, and it doesn’t look anything like a 904.

The "T";is silent, mate, as in "Daybyyood". The only reason I point it out is, the way you said it makes your voice sound like an A.I, which don't know about silent letters. I'm guessing your native tongue is Afrikaans. Good video, mate, keep 'em coming.

Another rip off from the land of the rising copy cats. 😂👌. Nice looking car. The designer used a picture of a Ferrari and some tracing paper 😂.
