The friendly game model just doesn't work in this kind of sport. The Nfl should give the individual awards but scrap the game, the winners are all tired of playing an entire season and just want to go on vacations. The best idea would be to create a "second Super Bowl" or "Bronze Bowl" between the two conference championships losing teams. A third place game with a trophy for the winner and good money for both teams and its players. They both lost the conference trophy and the chance to win the Super Bowl, at least they could save the season by being the third best team and win a compensation trophy. Surely all Nfl fans would like to see such game. Both teams could be, or should be, in the Super Bowl anyways. Imagine a Saints vs Chiefs game, for third place, last season. Many people always claim that they would rather prefer to see the losing teams than the ones that won, or at least one of them, playing the Super Bowl. I think that, by not doing this, the Nfl is throwing away a potential great game between two of the four best teams of the season and also losing credibility.

How to improve the pro bowl 1. Make the game a flag football game. I would rather see a competitive flag football game then a pillow fight with players pretending to try. 2. Have a kicker competition. Make them kick from 60+ yards out, and at different angles, it can be their version of the 3 point contest. 3. Move the playoff games a week up so you don't have to exclude the super bowl players.

Or some interesting twist played. First: 6 pts for FG(8 pts if 50 yards+), but opponent will take the new possession from the spot of the kick. 3 pts for TD, but retain possession from own 25 yards. 1 pts for touchback in punt.(like rouge in CFL) no points for safety, but team who scored safety will start new possession on opponent's 10. Second: 5 downs, but have to push 20 yards.

Nope. 1) Super Bowl losers regulalry skipped and sometimes the winners did too. 2) Super Bowl players are not the only ones missing. As shown innthe video 2016 had the most declined invites ever. This is how Vince Young made the probowl. He was something like the 4th alternate after Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Steve McNair (Ravens), Trent Green (KC) and Jake Plumber were all some combination of injured and declined to play. 3) The most important point is that the pro bowl before the super bowl gives you football to watch in the off week before the big game after after the Championship games. Do you remember how shitty the wait for the Super Bowl was? Moving it increased ratings for two years before it crashed again because it was shit. I missed almost every probowl while growing up because after the super bowl, I forgot about football.

@@PaulGaither 1 we can negate that with the suggestions in this video 2 refer to number 1 3 but nothing after the Super Bowl is even worse because it’s a 5-6 month drought, and most people just ignore the pro bowl because it’s more interesting to pay attention to everything leading up the super bowl, predictions, player interviews, big injury’s, taking part in the hype if your a fan of one of the teams, etc. than a soulless poor mans exhibition game, do you know why the stadiums are empty if the home team is 2-11? It’s because there’s nothing at stake. And you could say the same about preseason, nobody watches that, except maybe the first game just to get a feel for the rookies.

The location wasn't the motivating factor. Safety was. Listen to active and former NFL players in interviews. You are wrong and so is the video. Another fact you chose to ignore were ratings. Moving it to before the super bowl increased the rating dramatically. Even the drop in ratings recently are still higher before the super bowl than they were when it was played after. Here's my take on improving the Pro Bowl game: -No clock stoppage, except for timeouts -No overtime -No commercial breaks, except in between quarters and halftime.....or allow ads on jerseys for substitute -25 second play clock -Three downs instead of four -2 million dollar prize for every single player on the winning team

The Pro Bowl roster should be the All-Pro roster from each conference, and I agree that the fan vote sucks. That's also why I think the all-star games in the MLB and NBA are silly because they're in the middle of the season and they're only fan voted (pretty sure).

Just a few thoughts of my own. 1) Injuries: As you mentioned, many of the top stars and players at their respective positions limp helplessly into the final weeks of the season. Most especially those teams that participate in the playoffs, Conference championships, and the Super Bowl. For them, the Pro Bowl just isn't worth it. Namely because the sooner they can ditch the season, the sooner many of these players can get to their surgeries or rehab. 2) Hawaii: Believe it or not, I like the fact that the NFL is placing the Pro Bowl (even this meaningless game) to other portions of the country. Truth told, Hawaii is one of the most expensive states in the union, and not all fans can splurge on attending. Which means that the people who inevitably show up to this show, have seen it over and over again. But, for the game to take place in say, Green Bay or Charlotte, it would mean a TON to the fans who don't always get to experience the thrill of a real game. More than that, the players might enjoy themselves as they get to spend time in a place they might just shoot through for a Sunday game, or never think of seeing at all. 3) Boredom: Lastly, beginning in the early 2000s, many NFL players that ARE chosen for the Pro Bowl, simply choose NOT to participate. Their main reason....boredom. It's one thing if you are a 1-2 year rookie who is chosen as a Pro Bowl selection, like a; Kyler Murray, Sam Darnold, or John Ross III. But what of players such as; Drew Bress, Tom Brady or Rob Gronkowski, who have been to multiple Pro Bowls and the scent is off the rose? It's not all the fan's fault; the way these guys are compensated for their efforts through their contracts is consistently being the top of their positions year after year. With that in mind, you MIGHT get one or two players who excel every other year, but for the most part, the same guys are picked because they are the best at what they do. That being said, you can't blame the players for NOT wanting to be bothered with a game that to them is still just a part of their jobs.

Gives me Smash Summit vibes. Invite a bunch of the best players to stay at a house or property of some sort for a weekend or week, and along with a "proper" event there's a bunch of fun side events and general goofiness. It's ultra fun to watch because you get to see players interacting in ways you normally never would.

It's tough because as a baseball fan, the All Star game is very much still alive. The home run derby, just a fun mini game has turned into a grand event. The actual game can and is played competitively because it's safe to play real baseball, and whichever team wins gets home field advantage in the world series. Maybe football could do the pro bowl at the end of the season, and whomever wins gets their division's field picked for the next Superbowl. Plus 7 on 7, flag, ultimate football, or whatever would work well. As far as an NFL home run derby, they should do an American Ninja warrior type course. Or maybe just do another home run derby. I think it would be entertaining to see since there are a good amount of former MLB draft picks in the NFL (technically Russell Wilson plays for the Yankees still, but just for spring training)

I just like seeing the players be goofy, show off their talent, and have a good time together. I actually like the game because there are so many nonsense trick plays, but some of your ideas are fantastic and would be so much more fun. More skill challenges please, it's what we all love most. More dodgeball! I'd watch the hell out of flag played with positions switched like some of the comments suggest.

100% agree. I think they need to expand on the skill competitions. Bring back the old QB competition and maybe a 100 yard race to see whose fastest. Maybe Barrow some ideas from those strong man competitions for the big guys in the trenches.

Charles Tillman is a great example of pro bowl snuffs. A consistent career that only got better and better from 2003-2012, but only got two pro bowl selections in 2011-2012. It took a game with 4 forced fumbles for him to finally get recognized as a talent by fans outside his division, and by then that was his last great year. Other factors such as being stuck in a cover two defense, and not being as flashy as "shutdown" corners (forced fumbles and Randy Moss pick aside) held him back from pro bowl selections.

Addition: Have the pro bowl, but every position is swapped. So like the secondary is linemen and rbs, front seven is cornerbacks and quarterbacks, the o-line are receivers and the skill positions are dls or lbs.

Word brother. I was just binging on some old QB skills vids from early 2000s. I think that'd be legit. Things they need: Obstacle Course: cause who doesn't wanna see a 300# lineman try to scale an 8' wall But for real, just challenges based on skillsets, general athleticism, etc would be bomb. Watching some of those oldish QB skill challenges, I wasn't a fan of all of them but the premise was solid. So something like a footrace for receivers and corners/safeties Sled footrace for lineman Footrace dragging a 100# weight for tight ends and backs, through sloppy sand Vertjump for safeties/corners/wideouts that then determines the height of a donkey they later have to pin a tail on midroute. Do it again with a 50# weight vest. Chest deep swimming in mud for linebackers and backs But, the creme de la creme, la pice de l'enfant (that's probably wrong butt fuck it) is QBs having to run along a line (escaping the pocket) while also using a SKIP-IT (fuck yea) and throwing balls at various points onto garbage cans of their choosing (have a multitude on the field, higher points for further or crossbody throws). Then you can score based on speed, number of skips (cause skip-its count that shit yo), and the point value of garbage cans.

I agree with you for everything except moving it to after the Superbowl. I think the Superbowl should be the big grand finale of the season. A meaningless bragging rights game just doesn't feel like it should follow the game that crowns the best team in the league that year.

Just had a good(maybe) idea. Each NFL team gets a dodgeball team with X amount of players. You have a massive tournament, espn switches between various games, interviews/replays/ etc in between, and schedule it out like a day in march madness

The problem with moving the Pro Bowl back to Hawaii is that, from what I’ve heard Aloha Stadium is in bad shape. Have to fix that first before anything. As for a temporary facility maybe use San Diego (like that would happen).

Two things: 1. If they keep with a traditional Pro Bowl game, they wouldn't go back to Hawaii until they replace that rusting trashfire known as Aloha Stadium. 2. That point at the end about emphasizing skill competitions made me realize something about All-Star weekends in other sports: I care significantly more about the skills competitions than the actual games. In the NBA, I couldn't be bothered to watch the game, but love the 3-point and dunk contests. Same with the NHL and the hardest shot/fastest skater/breakaway competitions. Even the MLB All-Star game, which is probably the most watchable of the big four all-star games, still has to contend with the Home Run Derby. The NFL definitely needs to do more to emphasize compelling skills competitions during Pro Bowl Weekend.

Or create a pro-honors week, with skills challenges, 7on7 tournament, big man tournament, combine, maybe a rising stars event that is strictly selected by NFL coaches, GMs, and players- followed by the NFL honors to wrap it up instead of a pro-bowl game. They have an opportunity to make the entire week about entertainment and ratings, and if they make it after the super bowl you could finish it up with the SB awards where players are formally given their SB MVP, SB Trophy and we can hear actual thought out speeches instead of the in-the-moment. A nice way to give fans closure to the season instead of it ending when 0:00 is on the clock at the SB.

Seeing this video, I had two doubts: 1. Why not use the All Pro votings along to get the Pro Bowl rosters as well? I’m pretty sure that with the same ballot it would be possible to make a more accurate roster of the best of both conferences. 2. Trying to understand what the NHL does to make their players value their All Star Game: I’ve never heard in my life complaints about they having problems with players not taking it seriously. If that doesn’t work out, the main game should be a 11 vs 11 flag football match.
