Well, the issue is that when you were seen as the model minority, everyone complained about how Asian guys are being emasculated and portrayed solely as the nerdy dude who does his math homework. I think having individuals who challenge that stereotype helps to break it and represent you guys as not just boxed into one role. I think people like Ryan Higa won’t criticize the creators of today since what they did was pave the path for more creators to emerge, whether or not it was wholesome. While I know where you’re coming from, I think we need this wave of new creators to help create more buzz around Asian creators

Thing is their audience is just other Asian people, it’s not breaking anybody’s stereotypes because the people who hold those views aren’t watching these videos. If anything, it’s only built more of them within the community, since they’re just reinforcing all the socal/Bay Area/ NYC stereotypes we already have of each other. The whole “abg”thing doesn’t even mean anything since it just gets applied to anybody who vaguely shares a trait.

I completely agree. As much as I despise the cringe and the repetitiveness of such content, it's nice for us to have a variety in content creation. Asians from all walks of life and with different personalities are putting themselves out there. Even if it's not what we vibe with, it represents a certain crowd. Not every Asian is a K-drama character built with perfection.

This video is funny, but I don’t know, maybe because I’m not Asian(black), I don’t see this as specifically Asian TikTok content. It seems more like a TikTok 'problem' overall. Cringe content gets a lot of upvotes, and that's how things go viral. Heck, even before you mentioned Nigahiga, there was Just Kidding Films, aka Just Kidding Party, with a lot of the unhinged humor you now see on TikTok, just in a Gen Z version. As for the stereotypes, if they’re harmless and stay within the culture, it’s okay. We all know deep down it’s mostly just a playful way to highlight hobbies and activities that are popular in the culture. I don’t think you need to be a hipster to avoid being associated with a TikToker, lol.
@nahkato3 ай бұрын
this. so many people, (specifically asians) think this cringey tiktok humour is setting us asians back, which i personally think is funny because the main people using this argument are white washed and not even tapped into their asian culture. as an asian myself, i do not see any of this as a problem.. no one looks at a cringey tiktok and immediately thinks "oh, so thats what asians are like". personally, if you find yourself mad at one silly tiktok that a teenager makes, and decide that, that video is bringing ALL of us asians down, or "setting us back" you should probably get off the internet.
@driftofair969127 күн бұрын
Actually this is a really good point, I know TikTok content isn't meant to provoke thought or push any good boundaries, but just to garner as much attention as possible in as little time possible. I can agree that Asian TikTok is pretty cringe across the board, but then again so is #BikeTok and #BookTok. I can't even say that one is worse than the other because it's all equally bad (don't get me started on people who form political opinions on that platform either). It's no one community doing this, it's everyone.

As a Blasian tbh I’m conflicted on the concept of racial stereotypes bc they can be very limiting to how you can express yourself and can keep us in the cycle of repeating systematic racism but at the same time a lot of these “negative stereotypes” like (being nerdy, only drinking boba, liking raves, etc.) are literally just Asian American culture so it’s expected that a lot of them are going to enjoy doing that, doesn’t mean all of them have to but it’s a common activity.
@chillblue16502 ай бұрын
I think the difference is that these "modern" stereotypes (going to raves, drinking boba, playing Valorant) are assigned to us by us. In contrast, negative stereotypes of the past (being nerdy, unattractive, etc.) were given to us by racist people. As such, these new content creators are basically speaking to people who can relate, so it isn't as much of an issue. They're basically spreading around memes among themselves. Yes, it's cringe sometimes, but I don't think it's necessarily detrimental.

I fucking called it that the stereotype specifically with Asians loving raves was gonna start exploding on media. Back when I used to be on hinge in 2022, I noticed a lot of Asian girls I swipe to always have raving images involved with their favorite artist being illenium, Dabin, said the sky, gryffin, excision, knock2o, isoknock, and most popular of all to them Slander. Melodic edm is a top tier to them and I don’t get why it’s Asians that love the fuck out of those specific artists. As an Asian myself I grew up loving edm ever since I was a kid because my older brother got me into it. So I knew the classics of the golden era of edm. Heck even before the melodic edm artist started popping among Asians. It baffles me how long it took for a lot of them to get into edm this late LOL

As an Asian person I always thought it was weird how the African American community always called out “minstrel” acts in the entertainment industry but Asians always allow these “yellow peril” influencers ie:Peter chow, justkidding etc. be successful while encouraging the world to make fun of Asian traditions and accents. Even nowadays I still see some influencers such as uncle Roger who provides no entertainment value other than to act as a low knowledge immigrant who can’t speak English properly and criticize other people. Can we plz leave that in the past
@chillblue16502 ай бұрын
I see what you're saying, but this is a different situation from what you're referring to. These younger Asian American content creators are basically joking around about their subculture/lifestyle. It's not specifically related to Asian culture, if that makes sense. It's more about stuff they do in their late teens and early 20s. These are stereotypes they gave themselves, not stereotypes that racist white people gave to them. There's a difference.

"Men used to go to war... now they make seaside tiktoks." - my cousin. To that, I say "what men?". The ones who stormed Normandy were children. The average being 21. The youngest being 15 In retrospect, Ricegum was cringe asf. But what's cringe for one generation will be nostalgic for another. Ricegum was my childhood. My older cousins didn't like him but that didn't matter because he made content for kids in middle school. There will always be a new cycle of king bach's There isn't foul play in harmless internet spaces and trends for the younger generation. Point being, this type of humor isn't for you anymore. It's for children, teenagers, high schoolers and undergrads. And that's not outrageous at all, we've all been there. It's actually quite harmful to dismiss the young people (creators and consumers alike) of this genre of comedy because it is *not the opposite*, but a *stepping stone* towards maturity. It's good for them to get everything out of their system before they hit their late 20s and their pre-frontal cortex develops. Not all cringe is bad. I would call it a necessary evil. Let the kids be kids. Don't diminish their youth. I'd rather have them consume this content than stuff like andrew tate and/or similar at the ripe age of 20 - "...setting asians back generations..." This is a joke? So much war, death, and imperialism had to happen for this generation to be BLESSED enough to be in Southern California, to attend UC's. to go to EDC. They are allowed spend their youths however they see fit, they owe it to their parent's sacrafices. I guarantee this donut shop is funding MULTIPLE tuitions rn. - Also, you live in an echo chamber, fortunately I can assure you most people in the country outside the Asian or Socal bubble do not know about your seaside antics. - Also I'm a bit too employed to care about this subject matter at hand, but let's be honest, meatsauce and kentbui are getting cyberbullied into oblivion right now. The second I hear about them getting death threats, I'm gonna lose it. Some people are just plain mean and are just looking for a reason.

The "setting asians back generations" is a joke (hyperbole) in reference that certain videos shine a bad light towards the asian community. But, you are right about how the videos trend for younger children. Ricegum is a great example u brought up. Overall, the "cringe" content has a sort of audience and is popular for a reason. I'm just hoping that the trend doesn't bring new negative stereotypes, as it very much has potential to do so in the long run. I appreciate your comment, you gave a good perspective on this!

I don't mean to be one of those "not like other kids" type of guy, but I don't really like boba, listen to keshi, and never even went to a rave. So I find it annoying to see that Asians in socal are just seen as some monolith of abgs/abbs when in reality, it isn't... I know many Asians are okay with all the new creators, but it’s not about the perception from outside the community, it’s about the perception within. I’m black, and coming from the black community I’ve gotten the most hate from my own people simply because I don’t fit the stereotype set by the past and a lot of new gen creators. I’m not somebody that’s gotta speak with a thick accent, and I don’t get into trouble and act crazy all the time. I’m chill, I make nerdy and witty jokes, I talk real shit whenever I feel it. I joke ALL THE TIME, but I know my limits and boundaries to switch it off and be serious. Most content creators DONT HAVE that these days, and it may not affect you as someone who’s older, but it hurts the kids so much because they’re influenced by it the most. They’ll think it’s okay and that it’s the norm to be degenerates the way they see on that screen, and internally, they’ll start to bully the kids that don’t fit the stereotype and/or reaffirm them. So yeah, it’s good that you can see different personalities in the Asian community based on stereotypes that YOU grew up with, but this is not your time anymore. Those kids are growing up with THESE stereotypes, and don’t know anything about the ones you grew up with. I don’t want to see content creators spiral down into degenerate culture just for entertainment, I wish people would put being better person over entertainment, giving kids something to relate to when they start to have problems. In this era of the internet, you will never get another CoryxKenshin, a Jacksepticeye, Dashie, Etika, NigaHiga, or anybody who just wanted to be a good person and make videos. It’s not to recreate these people, but it’s to maintain the substance. Kendrick Lamar explains all this but better in his new song. We ARE going backwards because we should never feel stuck as a people because of nonsense going on like it did in the 2000s. It took Kanye West being a nerd that was mainstream for people to even want to talk about their feelings in a song. We won’t have that again in decades if people don’t show what it means to just be a person instead of an internet superstar. Have fun, but don’t degrade your own community with new stereotypes. Just try to be a better person, and nobody can say you’re wrong for that.

Ryan Higa is the OG and he is amazing. Ricegum he is just cringe, I don't understand why he became famous and not a very good person to me.
