The problem with being the best is that it can create unrealistic expectations, put excessive pressure on oneself, and breed a culture of comparison and competition. Striving for excellence is admirable, but it's important to recognize that perfection is unattainable and can lead to burnout and disengagement. It's essential to focus on personal growth and development, rather than external validation or competition with others. To avoid the problems of being the best, prioritize self-care, set realistic goals, and cultivate a growth mindset that values progress over perfection. Remember, being the best is not the goal, but rather becoming your best self.

Those who fail to adapt are far more likely to fail rather than succeed. It is an extremely difficult task to know when we should stay the same or change. I find people are all too willing to notice change and point fingers at others, and it is a rare trait to find people willing to accept there is something they can change to make things better for them. The more open minded a business is towards change I believe the more likely they are to have longevity.

Define “compete” as a reflection of cost relative to the ability of a massive chain to buy in bulk vs a “mom and pop” drowning in debt and dealing with a bank that is giving better interest rates in loans to the chain. And then talk about why the chain wins.
@TheItalianoMafiosi3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. His message makes sense in a way and applies if two competitors have the same means. Then it's up to the one being overtaken to look at the other, learn from it and improve. But if it's a small mom and pop's vs a giant chain that probably even evades taxes because it can afford the best accountants it's not really mom and pop's fault. They simply can't compete. You see this every day and in every industry. The large companies are just more powerful financially speaking, of course they'll win. It's attitudes like these that will cause more and more small business to fail with people blaming it solely on them. It's just not that simple. Sure, mom and pop's could buy soy milk and maybe a new couch. But if Starbucks enters the chat with 400 different kinds of coffee and a fancy new building with fancy new interior that they can only afford because banks will just give them loan after loan, what's mom and pop's gonna do? Sure, blame it on the owners, that's the lazy explanation that will always benefit the larger corporations. I'm not saying that those who make it usually also have better products, but that's not all. This kind of view just ignores the massive financial advantages companies like Starbucks have.

Interesting that I had this video rerecommended after listening to "Are You Distracted by Other People's Success?" from May 21, 2021. In that one he discusses how BlackBerry failed because it tried to add Apple like services. In this one he talks about coffee shops that fail because they did not add Starbucks like services. 20/20 rearview mirror is always easy to see why something fails. My question is how do you thread the needle of the future to say our product is good and just needs to be made better for our market and stay focused to get ahead or when we need to look at the competition realize our product is not what our customers will want in compared to them and better ourselves. How do we act like Apple and not care about Microsoft but still see the things they do right to innovate to match what we are giving with our customer base (Third and first video I was introduced to Simon in "The Infinite Game").

The reason UBER was eating taxis for lunch is that it circumvented local regulations and minimum car requirements. It is true that that made for better taxi service in cities like Paris, Bucharest, Rome, New York, LA, Atlanta where taxi service where and still are criminally horrendous, but also made for dangerous situations and eroded civic capital where taxis services were decent. In Atlanta, I once had a 75 year old with a 25 year old Honda Civic UBER pick me up to go to the airport - I hesitated to get in but had a flight to catch - 60 minutes into the ride granny tells me she had NEVER been to the airport, couldn´t understand the mapping software and could I help her figure out how to get to the airport. I missed my flight. Lets not forget that UBER is severely leveraged with billions upon billions of cheap capital. It is a one trick pony with NOT ONE proprietary capability - just boat loads of expendable cash. UBER continues to lose buckets of cash, If UBER operated outside the current market bubble in the real world where losing money bankrupts a company they would have disappeared long ago.

Well taxi companies in some countries hate Uber because they have a different set of rules. They don't pay social security, they don't pay as much taxes, they don't pay an insurance for travelers, license to operate a car with a driver is cheaper than a license to own a taxi and so on. So it is not a better product, and it is not because of competition it is because it is a disloyal competition.
@optimize.3 жыл бұрын
Little oversimplified. Large corporations have huge economies of scale, which would make it harder for mom and pop shops to compete. People doing their best and competition can be a good thing, as long as there is a level playing field between larger businesses and SMEs to overcome the skewed power balance caused by, for example, economies of scale, tax & legal benefits provided to corporations or the pro-corporate effects of lobbying efforts.
@marcelsudan44463 жыл бұрын
