The Joker is Batman 's arch nemesis, his full time enemy ----
But he's not exactly alone in that endeavor.
Batman has a full rogues gallery to choose from ---
and yet, there's no shortage of criminal clowns.

Marcus Lee If that's what yall want then fine. I want that for you. But that also sounds boring as hell if it's going to be exactly like the 2022 movie. With no personality. Black Mask was more interesting as a mask-obsessed villain rather than a torture-obsessed villain. Both are street-level. Honestly every villain is kinda street level other than the batman and Robin movie villains and the post-golden age Clayface. Still, might be a good idea

@@leafyishereisdumbnameakath4259 - To be fair to Black Mask, he hasn't been this "torture obsessed" crime lord for a long, long time now; except for his role in *Birds of Prey* (with the whole face-peeling thing), he's been back at being Mask-obsessed for a while now. Like in the *Batwoman* show for instance, which is sadly a great, multi-layered Roman Sionis... sad, because since he's stuck as a good character in a crappy show, no one will ever see this performance. Black Mask has also a pretty big role in the "Harley Quinn tv-show comic book", after the *Eat-Bang-Kill* tour, and it just made me wish he was in the animated series proper. Anyway, I'm not sure how soon a new live action Black Mask will appear, since he's been done semi-recently in *Batwoman* , but I'll be there for it.

I've always seen Bane when written correctly (only really happens in the comics, sometimes), as a better Archnemesis for Batman. He is supposed to be stronger and faster to the point he doesn't need gadgets, while also being just as strategically intelligent. Some versions of Bane even call the Bat out for all the gimmicks seeing it as a cover-up for weakness, and the crazy part is - he's right, Batman is an ordinary human amongst super-beings and is ultimately just a scarred little boy trying to make sure nobody else shares the same fate he had, Batman is as much a cover-up for those weaknesses in Bruce as Bane's venom drug is for Bane.

That’s a really good point. Tbh, I’ve said the same thing about Batman. The problem that the writers have created with the Batman, is his blatant hypocrisy. They’ve amped up and made the Joker so incredibly psychotic that he actually does cause EXACTLY what Batman claims he wants to prevent. Because Batman allows to live (and yes im aware of his rule), he causes unspeakable chaos and destruction. He creates orphans just like Bruce. But they don't have a loving butler, or billions of dollars to cushion their fall. This is one of my primary issues with both Batman and the Joker

@@dylanburton4955 - Poison Ivy was done pretty damn well in live action in 2022, but since it was in the third season of *Batwoman* , no one watched Bridget Regan's performance. I had given up on that show at that point, but when I read that DC would loan Pamela to the CW for 3 episodes (and no more), I decided to give her small arc a shot... I'm glad that I did, her story was actually pretty good... I just wish Luke Fox/Batwing fought her solo, since both Batwomen in this show have been pretty awful. So yeah, like Black Mask in season 2, and Red Alice in season 1, Ivy was done very well in this show. I think the Joker problem started with Ledger: Tracking the character in popular culture, Romero’s Joker was just part of a roster of villains (he’s given some special attention, his stories in season 1 for example do feel like event episodes, but he doesn’t overshadow the show as a whole), Nicholson was arguably the first big boom in the character’s popularity (with Mark Hamill’s animated counterpart catching the attention of many-a-bat-fan), but Heath Ledger’s Joker had this hold on popular culture that can still be felt, today. Since Ledger, any actor whose taken on the role (in live-action) had eyes on them and, as great as Ledger is, this gave way to a Joker over saturation that has, unintentionally, dampened the greatness of the character. When he turned up in The Batman, I shrugged which shouldn’t be the reaction when you introduce a major player like that into the series. Hopefully, in 10-20 years time, we’ll be able to put The Joker in the shadows and build him up in the background; give other villains their time to shine… or maybe we’ll forever be seeing that clown show up, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Edit: Just to clarify, I do not mean Ledger himself was the problem, it’s that Ledger’s Joker (and the phenomenon that the character created) is where I think the problem started.
@randallflagg3700
@randallflagg3700 Жыл бұрын
The Ledger Joker phenomenon was indeed crazy, even _before_ the movie came out that was all comic book fans talked about, he was at the center of all the promotion, all the doubt that surrounded the casting of Heath Ledger as Joker, followed by his passing, was erased by the buzz around the performance. The stories about how meta Ledger played it, with exaggerated tales of staying locked up trying to become as crazy as possible, that was back when the average movie-goer still believe that it was "the role that killed him!!!" And then of course, when the public could finally watch the movie, his performance was impeccable, so the legend grew out of control. We would have to wait for the MCU Thanos for another supervillain to generate that much hype.

Joker is such a charismatic villain and fan favorite that audiences accept any farfetched scheme he pulls off just to see him on screen or on panel. Just think of things like Joker fish, any of the dozens of times he hijacked TV airwaves, or his plans from the Dark Knight movie. None of these things are anything Joker should be able to or have the means to pull off, but as long as he gets to match wits with Batman people are okay with it.

A "safe bet" is to direct and produce ANY MOVIE very well with a plan and good writing. Then, step two is to let Batman fight other villains which are pretty good. The problem with DC movies "beating the dead horse" is to incessantly use Joker and Batman and not even use other heroes and villains, like Mad hatter, Elongated Man, Martian Manhunter, the PUzzler, Bookworm, etc.

Exactly ! I have the same problem/issue with Batman just like you described. Like I really appreciate the rivalry between these two characters but I feel like throughout the media that I have seen joker has been taking way more of the mantle as Batman's arch nemesis and I feel like other villains don't get the same credit or focus as much. Like for example Spider-Man has an evenly distributed focus on his villains and I wouldn't say any particular villain has more complicated relationship with him over the others although some would suggest green goblon but overall Spider-Man's villains are pretty much equally focused. Thank you for making a video like that

What's even worse is, I'm pretty sure that Joker's had a lasting effect on the batfamily more than any other rogue. Jason's "death"? Barbara's paralysis? Even "removing" the faces of the batfamily in one comic? Joker. They're *all* Joker. And no doubt there's many more instances too, but I won't go on. I can't think of any other rogue who's had as lasting and as *permanent* an effect on the batfamily as Joker. It just seems like he's hogging all the spotlight, and every single actually meaningful thing is given to him automatically. Most if not all of what the other rogues do aren't nearly as permanent or long-lasting.
@randallflagg3700
@randallflagg3700 Жыл бұрын
But the "face removing" part wasn't permanent nor long-lasting... just a joke that lasted one issue. Bane also had a big, long lasting effect on the Batfamily, since he killed Alfred and benched Batman for a long time, which led to him passing the Bat-mantle to Azrael.
@Frredster
@Frredster Жыл бұрын
@@randallflagg3700 Yeah, that's why I put "removing" in quotation marks like I did. Plus, regardless of it being a "joke", the reader doesn't know it's as such until the reveal. And ok, Joker and Bane, out of what, how many rogues now?

I feel The Joker needs to be in every Batman adaptation, he's too important to be left out entirely. However, he should not be in every chapter of the Batman adaptation. It's more impactful when Joker shows up for the big events but he shouldn't be in every little event in between, stealing everyone's spotlight. For "The Batman" sequels, I want Joker to be a villain of a movie. Just not for a while. I want the build up and suspense for him to EVENTUALLY flip Gotham on its head, I just want to see the other rouges get their spot in the sunlight before then, like Mr Freeze, Court Of Owls, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Bane, Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul. Have Joker in every Batman's story, but not every Chapter of Batman's story.

Someone has probably pointed out that in Batman 66 (and that very much includes the animated film revivals), while the Joker's around, he is definitely not the main indispensable villain. He's definitely in the top four, but he isn't even quite the most distinctive and colorful of them (or even as distinctive and colorful as some other more minor villains.) Objectively in terms of appearance, the Penguin is the main villain; in effect, the Riddler is more Jokerish than the Joker.

My personal 2 cents. He's too unpredictable and dangerous. Like no one would work with him when on a whim he'll just shoot you. Bats won't kill him but I don't think for a second Gotham p.d. wouldn't. Especially how corrupt they can be.

Hi Joker. Joker is fun but he's not my favorite Batman foe. He barely cracks the top ten. The reason? He's not a character but a plague. Every other bat-foe has a motivation and an understandable origin. Now even if we assume that The Killing Joke gave us his true origin it still doesn't explain his madness. Manias are different from other types of mental illnesses but 90% of Batman villains have manias; that includes the Joker. However most manias still have an if/then logic to them. "If Batman doesn't solve my riddles that means I am a genius" if you want an example, Joker however has this mania to make crime performance art but why? The motive and layers to said motive are what makes a character.

There is a point here. When Joker is written well, his point is the 'one bad day' idea. When overused or just forced into a plot, he's just there to be an obstacle with no rhyme or reason. Sometimes he's unfocused and has no greater reasons besides impulse, then sometimes he's a twelfth level mega mind who acts to prove something about society or human nature. He's whatever is convenient to the story and that is very messy when you have other characters who can serve certain roles better.

I agree... I LOVE THE JOKER. So much so, that I spent 2 months watching "The Dark Knight" almost everyday so I can get Heath Ledger's manurisms down for Halloween. That was back in 2009. However... there are so many more in Batman's Rouges Gallery that deserves the spotlight. I'd love to see a movie that where Mr. Freeze is the main villain. I myself penned a hard r Batman comedy, in which Clayface is the main villian. Though, Joker does make an appearance and pay homage to the 1960's version where his mustache is painted over. Lol. So, yeah. I guess many feel they need to give him an audience, even in a short cameo. Maybe the next movie will get this right.

The problem is that the Joker is really overrated....an yes overused. If you take into consideration Batman skills and means, his rogue gallery and the DC Universe as a whole, you realize that he can't realistically be much of a threat. Don't get me wrong, he's still iconic and a very interesting character but you cannot buy how is supposedly a big threat even next to guys like Falcone. Additionally, he would be too weird to be taken seriously, respected and obeyed by other professional criminals. I can see him more being the leader of a cult of psychos, serial killers and airheads like the Manson Family than leading a group of very competent and skilled criminals and guns for hire like Ra's Al Ghul, The Penguin, Bane, or Black Mask. And that's what make the Joker a way weaker opponent. On a side note, I even laughed at the end of The Joker solo movie because there is no way that guy would become one of the biggest mob boss of a big criminal cesspool like Gotham. I mean, at some point suspension belief is important lol. That's why I prefered by far Heath Leadger's terrorist version - and you can guess he won't live longer - and Jared Leto's gangbanger approach to the role which is kind of a patchwork many different street gang cultures. Anyway, the Joker is overrated.

I think that, despite the critic/audience reactions, the script of The Dark Knight placed priority on Two Face as its main villain. It's the opposite of Arkhan Origins and Arkham Knight. As stated in the video, in the former game, Black Mask is hyped up as the main villain, yet the Joker ends up being the final boss. In the latter game, Scarecrow is hyped up as the main villain, yet the Joker ends up being the final boss. In contrast, The Dark Knight hypes up the Joker as the main villain throughout most of the movie, yet Two Face ends up being the "final boss" that Batman goes up against. There's also the fact that pretty much every character in the movie celebrates Harvey Dent, where even the Joker calls Harvey his "ace in the hole". It's even Harvey Dent that enabled the Joker to have a long-term impact on both Batman and Gotham City. Without Harvey Dent (and without him getting turned by the Joker into a fallen knight), the Joker would have simply (yet famously) been another villain who got defeated and then captured by Batman. But because of Harvey Dent being in the picture, Bruce Wayne now has to struggle with the real possibility of himself also falling into madness. If a "white knight" like Harvey Dent can fall into madness, what stops the same from happening to Bruce Wayne? So I think the Joker is seen as the main villain in that movie, not because of the script, but because of Heath Ledger's incredible performance and the impact that had on the audience.

*Gotham* kinda did that, well not exactly since bat-rogues would overlap the seasons, but lots of them got origin story and lots of focus. It would be very hard to do a season focusing on only one villain, since like the Flash rogues for instance, they almost all know each others and interact on a regular basis. *Gotham* did a good job with that, there were some overarching villains like Ra's al Ghul, Penguin, Riddler, the Court of Owls, Hugo Strange, proto-Joker etc... but other rogues had some smaller arcs dedicated to putting them at odds with the GCPD and Bruce/Alfred. Mad Hatter, Mr Freeze, Scarecrow, Bane, Zsasz, Professor Pyg, Poison Ivy etc...

Well, with *Superman & Lois* season 3 coming out in a couple days, and with a new Lex Luthor showing up without feeling shoe-horned (they waited 3 seasons, good enough for me), we'll see how that plays out. Lex wasn't in *Titans* season 4 for very long, but I loved his short screentime. And of course, Jon Cryer kicked ass in Supergirl season 4 & 5 (and then became lame in season 6). Plenty of great Lex to choose from these days!
