I always experience that post purchase dissonance like after choosing what to eat and taking a few bites i’ll be looking at the pantry again and start to think i shouldve chosen something else because what i chose didn’t satisfy me

Nick Fascinating video as usual. In the UK yoghurt decision making is even harder. Why? Because most supermarkets offer online shopping with "click and collect" or delivery options. This leads to design issues regards website design as how the product is seen by the buyer can also dictate their decision process. But I'm sure all the factors discussed also come into play in a nuanced way as well. I'd be interested to hear about research you are aware of in this area and see any videos you might make.

I've been planning future videos that expand this yogurt example with new principles (including web nuances). However, many principles are deep mechanisms that work in any context. For example, in my experience, people are more likely to click a transparent button, rather than a button filled with color (which has always irritated me because contrasting colors have more saliency, and should capture more attention). But I think the culprit is simulation. With a transparent button, people can simulate themselves pushing INTO that button. If that's the mechanism, then - based on the research - the effect should disappear if people are holding something. Eventually, I want to run a study to verify that.

Agreed, deep principles are evident in all cases. I see many clients trying to use complex marketing when I start with them and my first advice is always to focus on people and their behaviour rather than the latest shiny marketing toy. Cut the complexity and focus on people and simplicity.

So is origin of choice automatic? Everything that comes before and after is personalized, but point of execution of choice is completely automatic.

Do you think a chocolate can taste better because you closed the box? Or it means that you are happier with that decision? I think the paper talks about having less regret with that decision but not about tasting better, what do you think?
@NickKolenda6 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'd argue both. The researchers asked people to taste the chocolate and then rate their satisfaction with the choice. Although the researchers didn't measure taste directly, the heightened satisfaction would likely raise expectations for the chocolate. And a lot of separate research shows that heightened expectations (even from a price) DOES influence the perception of taste.

I really love your channel, but I'd make the videos shorter (more concise), because compared to a video that has strong emotions and cuts every 2 seconds (think logan paul video) - it's much harder to watch the whole video without skipping around. (i knowww the audiences are different but i'm pretty sure it's hard for most people), also idk if you do - but i wouldn't worry about stretching them beyond 10min atm (again, perhaps you're not doing it on purpose), just my 2 cents
