It's advisable to arrive on time when playing a tournament game as your clock will be started anyway. I think being late & continually yawning was Beltik playing mind games with Beth.

I think those little ticks are not so much "tells" but more a way to get into their opponent's head by annoying/distracting them

Could be. I played a few tournaments in high school and I know that these days if your opponent is doing something distracting and refuses to stop even after you ask them too, then you can call an official over to make them stop under threat of disqualification.

Yeah. There's no psychology in chess. It's entirely objective. No move is affected by anything other than the moves that went before. You can try to break people's concentration, but it's not like there are "tells". Well...There may be, but it's not something you can use. The moves speak for themselves. You're playing the board, not the opponent.

Yeah, there are no tells in chess. There is no real element of luck involved. The exaggerated yawning would be an attempt to show confidence and psych out the opponent.

Someone can show surprise at a move, or look confident or like they are concentrating a lot. Some are more poker face than others. At least at the top level you can see that. But talking during a game, no way would you normally see that.

@@starry2006 Sure, but being able to read what any of those looks mean wouldn't give you any advantage at the table hence they aren't really tells.
