IIRC, Yugi was designed with the idea of him being "the goth kid" at his school, which at the time meant dark clothes, chains, bracelets, additional belts, tall shoes, multi-colored hair, etc. Kazuki Takahashi said he also took inspiration from Hellraiser, and the clothes the Cenobites wore, when designing Yami/Yugi. So you end up with a goth/emo/scene kid who lived out a real horror movie and made peace with the demon in his puzzle. You are correct in regards to general character design starting around Battle City, though. Just look at Duke Devlin.

Choose up to three monsters your opponent controls and change their battle positions. Then, until the end of the next turn, increase the attack of all face-up zombie monsters on your side of the field by 100x the number of zombies in your graveyard." The card's name is a bit more of a pun in japanese that I can't think of how to work in english, but a translation for plain meaning would be something like "Surprising zombie victory"

Apart from Folgo, they don't seem gay to me. They're just furries, and straight furries do exist. I'd say Lunalights would be a better fit for a gay furry archetype, they seem more flamboyant to me than Fur Hire (I mean no disrespect to either archetype saying this, I love playing both of them.) Also there's a decent amount of anthropomorphic animals in YGO besides Fur Hire, and I wouldn't consider Tri-Brigade, Zoodiacs, Salamangreats, Glad Beasts, etc. to be gay just because they're anthropomorphic animals.
