I love this idea and the design, my girlfriend is going to school in Philadelphia and I was curious if it would be legal for her to carry it? I tried searching for laws and restrictions on something like the quill but I wasn't able to find anything, just wondering if you'd know more. Thanks!

I cannot give legal advice because everything comes down to the individual interaction with the law enforcement officer-and LEOs can be wrong on the law too but still cause a person a lot of trouble. The State of Pennsylvania allows carry of many kinds of sharp things provided they have common lawful purpose, and the Quill is actually quite a handy multitool-we just emphasized the self defense aspects in this video. Philadelphia, however, is far more restrictive beyond state law and it’s almost impossible to carry any knife in the city-it’s as strict as Australia and New Zealand. Thankfully the Quill is not a knife, doesn’t look like a weapon, and has common lawful purpose beyond stabbing people. It’s been carried by customers in quite restrictive environments, including Washington DC, Philly, Australia, Mainland China, etc. I think the Quill is legal to carry in most any place, but even if I’m right, an individual interaction with a LEO can go poorly. If you carry an item like the Quill, use it daily for common utility tasks and be able to credibly say it’s a handy tool you carry on your person.

Since then my Quill is primarily carried either in the bottom of my pocket (oriented like the “Nike swoosh”-doesn’t poke into stuff) or tucked behind my ear, especially if its out and being used in EDC utility tasks-the ear tuck is just a quick, easy way to wear it. Pocket carry is most secure, and it can be discretely accessed and loaded into the hand in some self defense contexts. Slim Quill can be comfortably worn behind the ear for many hours. The Original Quill is a fraction of an once heavier, and can be comfortably carried in that position for a couple of hours. Quill XL is pocket carry or tucked in the belt. It’s heavy enough that the ear tuck is only feasible for momentary use (and it looks ridiculously oversized hanging off your ear). Some customers have rigged up homemade “sheath” carry systems so it can be worn in other places. These can be as involved as thermoformed kydex with brass eyelets, metal pocket clips, etc, to a simple as cutting a piece of clear, flexible plastic tubing, rough up one side to stuffed and glue a loop of thread, and then wear the Quill by just to dangling it from a shirt button.
