Throughout the school year, the Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP | newschool.edu/irp) at The New School (newschool.edu) presents lectures on timely topics for their members, the university community, and the general public.
Darrick Hamilton, Associate Professor of Economics and Urban Policy at the Milano School for International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy (www.newschool.e...) at The New School lectures on "Why Closing the Racial Wealth Gap is a Priority for National Economic Security." Professor Hamilton is a stratification economist whose work focuses on the causes and consequences of racial and ethnic inequality in wealth and health outcomes. He will outline how this wealth gap threatens our economic future and suggests some remedies for this historic national problem.

Truth be told all that marching was a waste of energy, just a waste of good new shoes for something that was never a matter of really building a community

Mr. Hamilton, saw you speak briefly on PBS when asked about the effect of economic lost on the white working class. a women who's husband committed suicide said the 3 choices to deal with depression; drinking, drugs and suicide. physical fitness is one of the best ways, and there are many others. "sins of the father visiteth the son".

I agree "Baby Bonds" would encourage population growth and increased resource usage, thus accelerating Climate Change. Dr. Hamilton's assertion that we could benefit from increased fertility on a planet able to sustainably support 1 Billion people, now choking with almost 8 Billion people and rising, is ludicrous! Better to subsidize wealth to those who keep their child size to 1 or less, e.g., with human cap and trade. While political third parties are a great idea, I don't think that they'll enjoy much traction until those parties can be represented by seats in Congress as they are in the U.K. and many other countries in Europe and elsewhere. Our best hope this cycle is to ensure that minorities and women get registered and vote for Bernie Sanders in the Primary - not Hillary Clinton. Since most of the policy changes Dr. Hamilton suggested are straight out of Bernie Sander's campaign platform, I'm curious as to why his name was not even mentioned??

Because bernie has refused to address race as an issue and professor darity has been doing this work before he came along. As far as the population goes, scarcity is manufactured by an economic system that puts profit over people. Most of the globe is unihabited and we have not focused on renewable resources which could support more people for less. Any eugenics style ideologies will target the poor and poc first, history has taught us to be wary of birth qoutas etc. The only people who are being effected by their birthrate is whites. Poc are not having too many children, big families have always existed, our system continues to deny survival to everyday americans and double (or more) for those of color .

Arguably he makes a critical mistake at 55:30 on reparations framing in an otherwise well done Q&A.. as taking from a privileged class, rather than redress by government that created the inequality.

More of the same. Talking about equality, just improvement would do. You can take the horse to water. In this case it's a community. If the community does not do anything new, it will not get new results. Where there is no vision, the people perish. No amount of statistical analysis will give them the right vision. Everywhere in the world there are social hierarchies and they are based on performance. It's not that the Welsh wished that an English man should be Prince of Wales, it reflect performance. All communities are not created equal, if you want to even them up, you have to make changes, preferably among the losers.
