If Major League Baseball didn't want Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa to lead in the HR record list, they could've done something about it. They watched the money roll in and decided to do nothing about it. Like it or not, 73 is the record. Blame Major League Baseball for that.

Listen, if we are going to open Pandora’s Box and start discounting records then damit let’s stop picking & choosing which ones we are going to count and which ones we aren’t. If Bonds record doesn’t count then let’s start removing known cheaters like Phil Neikro. Let’s start removing anything from the 70’s & 80’s when guys were on amphetamines which are performance enhancers. Let’s remove any references to the 1951 Giants who did the Astros thing almost 70 years before them. Then there’s the cru de gras, let’s remove every MLB record before 1947 which includes Williams .400 & DiMaggio’s hitting streak. Here’s the simple fact, Bonds has the most home runs, PERIOD. However if people are going to discount it I’m fine with it as long as you also discount EVERYTHING else where records were set by dubious means.

@@chuuuchify roids affect your batting average by a small amount. They drastically affect your home runs and increases your speed through the bases. If your average sucked before roids, it won't improve that much after taking roids. In the end bonds used roids just like everyone else did, and therefore cheated, like everyone else on roids. Simple as that, and those other good players on roids aren't in the hall of fame either. I'm not really understanding Stephen A's points in favour of Bonds. Yeah, Bonds hit 49, 46 and 42 home runs before he cheated. Mark McGwire hit 49, 42 and 39 (and maybe 52 depending on when the cheating began). But we know neither of them were breaking any records without PEDs. They had an established pattern of performance that didn't include 50 home runs, let alone 70. And Barry Bonds was angry because he was way better than Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, so what? So were Ken Griffey, Frank Thomas, Chipper Jones, Tony Gwynn and a lot of other ball players who still didn't feel the need to cheat. So, congratulations Aaron Judge, you are the new single season home run champion. And congratulations Hank Aaron, you are still the all-time home run champion.

@@nhu6791 okay cool. Then you also cannot count records of everyone I said. It’s been proven that players in the 70’s & 80’s were using amphetamines. Guys have talked about how there was a bowl of them in the middle of the locker room & they would pop them like Pez candy. Phil Niekro is in video throwing a fingernail file out of his pocket yet he’s in the HOF. There are whole documentaries on how the Giants used the EXACT same sign stealing method as the Astros back in 1951 yet we celebrate them. Lastly, the fact that MLB was segregated before 1947 means that all record’s including Williams .400 & DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak are tainted then because he didn’t have to face the best of the best solely for the reason that they didn’t allow black players. My point is if you are going to discredit Binds then fine, but you cannot pick & chose who you are going to discredit. You have to also discredit everything.

Bonds. I know they say steroids can slow a pitch down and give you the power to hit a home run, but the talent still has to be there. If they gave you or me the same stuff they gave Barry, Mark and Sammy, we still couldn’t hit 70 home runs in 162 games. It requires the ability to read a pitch, make a split-second decision on where or whether to swing and connect. Are their records tainted, sure, but they still managed to hit those home runs.

You're lying with statistics. Pre-steroids, Bonds had more than 40 home run only three times in his career through age 34, though he lost a 40-plus HR season due to the 1994 labor action. Five of the eight 40-plus HR seasons you allude to were post-steroids and after age 35. Look at the record. You will see three phases to Bonds' career. When he came into the league, his game was get on bases and score runs. He developed into a power hitter and RBI guy in his mid 20s. He became the jolly green giant and steroid king only after he was 35. He may have been fun to watch if you were a Giants fans, but someone who take steroids no longer is a natural human being.
@drexeldragon1723
@drexeldragon1723 Жыл бұрын
@@anonymike8280 I'm not lying. My point is that you can't discredit Bonds on a count of "his non-record years weren't nearly as good" when it's the exact same case with Maris. Other than 61, he never even hit 40. He hit 39 the year before in 136 games, which is a 46 homer pace over a full season. Other than that, not much. Averaged 30 homers per 162 games on his career, and that includes the season with 61. If you remove that season, it's under 27. So a guy that averages 27 homers over 162 games the rest of his career somehow got 61 one year. Bonds was a better power hitter than Maris without steroids. He led the league in slugging three times in the early 90s. You mentioned the strike-shortened season. He didn't just lose a 40 homer year, but potentially 50, as he was on pace for 53 over 162 games. In '99, he hit 34 in 102 games, or a 54 homer pace over 162. Was he using PEDs at that time? I don't know for sure. The story goes that he got jealous of McGuire and Sosa getting the limelight when he knew he was a better player. So if we assume he wasn't using in '98, we can trace back from that year to the beginning of his career. He averaged 35 homers per 162 games without steroids, and 40 per 162 games from '90 to '98. That's better than Maris. Would he have gotten the record without the juice? Probably not. That's your view, but you can't base it off of his other years because he was consistently better than Maris at hitting homers and yet Maris still found a way to have one outstanding season that stands as an outlier. You can put an asterisk on it, but you can't remove it from history. Those hits counted, the RBI's counted. They changed the scores of games and the standings at the time. The MLB did nothing to stop players from using because baseball was more popular than ever. Now they want to turn around and act like none of it happened after they exploited the entertainment value of players who used steroids. And the pitchers were also using, so that would also theoretically make it harder to hit off of them.
@anonymike8280
@anonymike8280 Жыл бұрын
@@drexeldragon1723 If you look at ballplayer records, you will find many that reach a peak for several years and then fall off. Maris is one of them. He was 27 years old when he hit 61. For three years, he was one of the best players in baseball. That was it for him, and it's not something rare. Ted Kluzewski had four years as the most feared power hitter in the game in the 1950s. Geroge Bell had five years as a prime power hitter in the 1980s. It's not as rare as you think By the way, I don't think it is a given that old time (pre-WWII and earlier) players were not using anything. They may have been naive about what they were doing, but that doesn't mean they weren't doing it. The salient symptom of PED use is enhanced performance. Any time you see enhanced performance, you have the right to at least consider. What constitutes enhanced performance is relative though. A fringe or journeyman player could be using too, just to be good enough to be in the game at all. Remember, Bonds turned 37 the year he hit 73 home runs. His record of 258 home runs between 36 and 40 was unnatural. By contrast, Aaron had 179 home runs and Ruth had 149 over the same age span. Jim Thome had 157. Darrell Evans had 149.

Barry Bonds' downfall was Shakespearean. He was a man consumed by a sense of being slighted and ignored. Some would say, by envy and jealousy. He didn't have the patience to wait it out, to wait for McGwire, Sosa and some of the others to be exposed. If he had suffered a career-ending injury at the end of the 1998 season, he would have been elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. He didn't need to do what he did. Whether Bonds is to be thought the all-time home run leader is not something that can be settled by a debate among sports journalists. Sports journalist are only people with opinions. Just like us. In fact, I've been a sports journalist myself. I covered preps, not pros. Nevertheless, my opinion is no more informed than anyone else's. It is, however, that I do not consider the team, league and MLB records set by Bonds, Sosa and McGwire to be valid. McGwire, in fact, was close to out of the game when he started juicing. Sosa was a decent power hitter who might have finished his career with more than 400 home runs. Of three, I fault his motives the least, but the bottom line is, steroids don't just keep you alert and help you get stronger. They make you a better athlete than you ever could have been without them. By using them, you cease to be a natural human being.

It does count as an AL record because while they have interleague play, in the next season, they will play only 46 of 162 games against the other League which only accounts for 25% of the games. The other 116 games is against their own league. So it's legit to say it's an AL record. Just like the NFL has the two conferences and do make record books not just for the NFL as a whole, but have records for both the AFC and NFC. As long as there is two conferences or in this case leagues within MLB, then there will always be three sets of records, ofc the MLB which covers both, then the AL and NL records which will always be there regardless of your opinion of it.
