An excellent presentation - I really wish I had heard it before my Christian faith had failed, and I spent too many years as an unhappy atheist! Thankfully, I returned to my faith about three and a half years ago, and the hard work of so many diligent people on this platform played a massive part in that. Praise Jesus for providing unworthy doubters like me with scholars like Paul Maier!

It is *so* difficult for people in a *SEA* of alleged "scholars" who write books like the ones this man mentions to not have holes in their faith or outright LOSE their Faith. Thank the Lord that men like this exist in order to reinforce the FACTS and to do it from a scholarly level. I was raised in a denomination that said I was good with "just the Bible". The fact is... NO I wasn't. Every week or two some "learned scholar" would "discovery" something supposedly new and it would put another hole in what I believed. Later on I realized the Bible is not in a vacuum ....I.e. dropped from the sky. There's an actual RESEARCHABLE Hiistory around the Church and what they believed, why they believed and how they actually practiced their faith. I blame groups like the one I was with that pretend that a book was simply "dropped" from the sky into our hands and things like "Jesus is just a feeling." etc.. and then of course there are those who are in direct atheistic attack as well. I believe Lord, Help my unbelief!!!! One of my favorite sayings from scripture.

It is astonishing how much controversy Jesus has stirred up right from the beginning, with no sign of it quieting down either. Others who were really big deals at the time we have forgotten about or only historians and history buffs know about them. Yet this man has torn the world apart after 3 just years of his mission. My apologies. I am embarrassed I spoke too soon. Reading the comments that all sounded very Gospel- (Besorah) oriented gave me a good barometric level on what the ideology of the presentation was about. I can't say I remember what it was he said that made me believe he was more of the all-too-popular view that had to believe Jesus/Y'shua had sex with Mary of Magdala and pass his seed on to future generations, which is something I definitely do not subscribe to. He had every right to marry and have kids to pass on his seed, but that was not the reason he came. Sorry for any mix up. Sometimes I react too quickly, especially when it has to do things I am passionate about, and the many sites featuring peanut gallery leaders that love to pervert the truth. I might be showing my age, but when I grew up and went to school, we did NOT disrespect a sitting president and try to have him/her removed! We never got to enjoy one day without the "liberals" spewing hatred against DJT and making plans to have him removed all without success (that is why I believe God put this man in office). They hate him not because he poses a threat to Democracy; they hate him because he exposes them. He has them at a checkmate, and they cannot move any which way without being seen. So I am praying that we get to have this remarkable man for another four years. Tertullian says that about Pilate, in his Apology, approximately end of chapter 21. I wouldn't call what Tertullian says a legend. "But He spent forty days with some of His disciples down in Galilee, a region of Judaea, instructing them in the doctrines they were to teach to others. Thereafter, having given them commission to preach the gospel through the world, He was encompassed with a cloud and taken up to heaven, - a fact more certain far than the assertions of your Proculi concerning Romulus. All these things Pilate did to Christ; and now in fact a Christian in his own convictions, he sent word of Him to the reigning Caesar, who was at the time Tiberius. Yes, and the Caesars too would have believed on Christ, if either the Caesars had not been necessary for the world, or if Christians could have been Caesars. "

I just woke up lol) and since he's universally accepted as the greatest historian of antiquity.. That works for me. I've seen some crazy things in my life.. But I didn't write them down at the time.. And there's multiple millions that could say the same. It's hard to imagine today with everyone having a recorder in their pocket I know, so think about it back then

Kuffar Legion when my dad was in hospice and dying, which took a week or so, he kept saying that people were visiting him that nobody else saw. The kicker is that everyone he said that came to him was people who had already passed away. He didn't see the pope or any famous people, but it was people like our neighbor who had recently died, who told him not to worry about all the things he was worried about leaving, that they will all work out and that there are no problems like that where he was going. That's just one example. Anyways, I imagine that day in Jerusalem might have been something like that.. people started seeing other people that they knew were dead.. But when they left, that just kind of disappeared. And when they discovered the Graves that were opened because of the earthquake, some of them thought that is why they had seen someone dead walking around. Who knows how it works, but maybe when Christ was getting ready to open that door back from the dead to the living, he let some others through it for a bit. I don't know, but that's not the center of the faith the Lord has given me, it's only something I discovered later and it's not a stumbling block to me.. I hope you don't let it be to you either

Kuffar Legion It's so common of an occurrence that it's in the hospice literature, recognized by the medial professionals that deal with the dying every day.. so yeah, I imagine it happened back then too. It tells you to expect your loved one to see spirits if the DEAD, not their favorite celebrity or some guy from work they saw every day and are just hallucinating. I don't know why you brought up yourself seeing someone when you were hospitalized but that was probably a drug induced hallucination or vivid dream. What's was your point anyway? You wanted to know how people saw dead people after Jesus died and I gave you an example of that type of thing happening even today. You don't want any answers because you think you know or all already. You even think you know why I'm a Christian but you could hardly be more wrong. I didn't think of death at all when the Lord called me, and I tell people about Him because 1. I'm absolutely sure that the Bible is truth and Jesus is alive. 2. It follows that hell is real and I don't want you to go there 3. Our God IS good.. Even wonderful and I experienced his presence and blessings all the time, and grow in wisdom and truth.. so why would anyone keep something like that to themselves?? 3. Jesus tells us to go and share the good news (aka the gospel)!! I seriously doubt that your persistence in unbelief outweighs my reasons for believing.. But that's your problem.. and it is sad. If you're right then we'll both die and that will be it. No gloating.. nothing mattered anyway, but if I were you I'd prepare for the judgement that the Lord tells us about.. And you do that only by having Jesus cover for you. So I recommend hiring the judges son for your lawyer 😉. BTW, I'm done with you. I write this for possibly someone else's benefit at this point. I'm not stupid enough to think you'll suddenly have something nice to say, actually I'm sure you've just got to rip what I've said to shreds, so have at it. I'm not gonna waist my time now but hopefully I've at least planted a seed

it is however an overstatement that flavius josephus particularly supports the neo-apologist idiom; josephus does imply that some figure known (by then anyhow) as "christ" did live, but no way does that establish anything supernatural about that historical figure. Just another scammer. The world has been for a long time engaged in writing lives of Jesus... The library of such books has grown since then. But when we come to examine them, one startling fact confronts us: all of these books relate to a personage concerning whom there does not exist a single scrap of contemporary information -- not one! By accepted tradition he was born in the reign of Augustus, the great literary age of the nation of which he was a subject. In the Augustan age historians flourished; poets, orators, critics and travellers abounded. Yet not one mentions the name of Jesus Christ, much less any incident in his life. - Moncure D. Conway [1832 - 1907] (Modern Thought) Jesus is all myth! Seek the truth!

I'm working on getting all of Maier's books. I didn't know what he was about when I got his Josephus about five years ago. I'd started Bible study again. And then his Eusebius. I forget where I saw his Pontius Pilate but I'm halfway through that. I've got 4 of his other novels. I struggle with my faith. But I'm wondering if someone can explain the sense of peace I get when I sit down and crack the Bible. For good or ill I spend most of my time on radical Islamic issues, which get me good and pissed off. When I finally sit down to the Bible study it's like a calm comes over me and almost like someone whispering in my ear, "this is where you're supposed to be. This is what you should be doing". Plus the added bonus of knowing which is "good" and which is "evil". I see Islam all over the scriptures. Especially when it talks of Christian martyrs and Revelation 20:4. I sometimes wonder if the Antichrist isn't so much a person as an ideology.

The people and places he mentions are already well known and it reflects badly on his admirers on this forum that they are impressed by him. As for his mention of the evidence for Jesus in Josephus, I bought a copy of Josephus to see for myself and it is so obviously an addition by somebody else I am amazed that anyone can believe it. On just one eight of a page he talks about Jesus saying "He was the Christ". He then goes on ( on a full page )to relate a story about a woman tricked into sleeping with a wealthy Roman. This is what happens when atheists investigate Jesus, they scrutinize to the utmost every little detail but will happily accept other historical figures on the say so of a wiki piece. You said you'd like to know more about Jesus from non-Christian sources, so i gave you Bart Ehrman.

I have seenprof. Maier in person before at a Lutheran Church. He is extremely knowledgeable takes a very fair approach using archaeology geography history and faith. His history books are very good especially his one volume abridged edition of Josephus writings. However, I wish she was a little more serious and less goofy about this and presentations this is a serious subject the world is lost. If you cut all the corny jokes out the lecture would be half as long it would be easier to remember the major points. However he’s a very nice fellow. I think he was in his 80s when this was recorded six years ago I hope he is in good health. He was going on archaeological dig‘s up till a few years ago for sure

Textual critics have ways of telling when information was added on. Like much of Josephus has work added on. This is not a valid argument to say Tacitus is tainted. Most, if not all, historians agree that his works are original.

Extremely knowledgeable and in-depth understanding of the ancient literature and archaeological finds. About Josephus though Maier's report may be the consensual one, but it raises a pretty much insurmountable problem of how this interpolation got copied into all subsequent manuscripts across Europe and Near East, as from Keith Prosser "Was Jesus Crucified?". His Shlomo Pines' reference is not as reliable as he's making out here. Very interesting talk though.

Weren’t they about 70 and 90 AD, on? Any earlier evidence? I will have to go research this again, because I seem to recall one a bit earlier, yet, 60’s? but perhaps to err on the latter dates as minimum vs maximum time frame/periods, he uses the latest dates. I’m trying to give him some slack, but I need to go back and research. Revelation would have been in Johns lifetime, as would be first hand accounts. Is the discrepancy owed to more mass transcription and dissemination? Anyway, if that’s all we have to quibble with Meier over, I’ll give him a break. Would be nice to ask him about this, though.

There is not one written eyewitness account of Jesus during his lifetime. Strange since he was famous at birth, because wise men expected to see the future king of Jews who was born from a virgin married mother. Every leading Christian scholar since Erasmus, five hundred years ago, has maintained that the gospels were originally written in Greek from 70 to 140 CE (Mark after the year 70, Luke about 110, Matthew about 130, and John no earlier than 140 CE). This proves that they were not written by Christ's apostles, disciples or by any of the early Christians. Others say: “There is no proof of the Gospels existing before 130 CE” Jesus is depicted as hugely popular in the gospels. Yet he is unrecorded by non-Biblical historians. Paul was the first one to write about Jesus around 60CE; but he, like everyone else, never saw Jesus. He experienced a vision of the resurrected Jesus. John Gresham Machen wrote: The establishment of Christianity as a world religion, to almost as great an extent as any great historical movement can be ascribed to one man, was the work of Paul. I also read that the history of the first three popes was invented because they never existed. All myth! Seek the truth!
