Darth Quantum You’re going to regret making this choice. And God does exist. And He doesn’t need anyone to prove His existence because He is going to prove His Existence all on His own. Every single prophecy in the Bible will be fulfilled. Every single one! And soon you will see a coalition of nations, led by Russia, Turkey and Iran, try and invade Israel from the north via the Golan Heights. But they will fail. All of them will be utterly defeated. And not by the strength of Israel. And not because the US helped them. But it will be solely by the strength of God. And you will see the unification of the world religions into one. After this Middle East war there will be the final formation of the global government as well as the global financial system. I hope and pray that you will let God open your heart and eyes to the truth.

That’s a reasonable speculation Reasonable Speculation, but don’t mistake skepticism for knowledge. We currently have no knowledge that provides a plausible explanation for why the body would grow massive tumors, including the most life-threatening histologies such as lung cancer, and then spontaneously decide to make those tumors disappear. Our body doesn’t decide to make our noses disappear, or our fingers, for example. And you would rightly say ‘but cancerous tumors are different’ - and that’s correct -- cancers are malignant growths that are driven by signals of uncontrolled proliferation that cause tumors to grow and never stop growing. I’m on a lung cancer disease management team and we see these spontaneous remission cases, which are remarkable especially for lung cancer which is among the most aggressive histologies. As far as ‘Oh, it’s the ol’ God o’ the Gaps argument’ - I would just say, first that it ironically takes as little thought to make the dismissive Gaps critique, as it takes for a very gullible person to believe the Gaps argument. I am open to the Miracle concept because it fits the current model of the Universe which is reasonably deistic, if not theistic - ie, the Big Bang and the Fine Tuned Universe makes it plausible that there is a Creator and One Who is interested in having us here. And there is overwhelming medical evidence that Faith has health benefits. The miracle patient I met was Christian ( wearing a crucifix , I didn’t inquire about her religious beliefs otherwise). She was meeting me for a research study, I had her history, we had her pathology - non small cell lung cancer - we do a research scan on her, and find that half of her disease has disappeared. I was surprised, because I am supposed to see the patients before they start treatment - and it looked like half her disease was already treated. I called up her oncologist and learnt the patient had not started any treatment. Then the rest of cancer disappeared. Last I checked, she’s still cancer free. Anecdotal, but we see it from time to time. You’re welcome to posit alternative hypotheses. But here’s some evidence for you to consider: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=harvard+weekly+religious+cancer (from UC Berkeley) and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27183175 (Harvard).

Mark Dunphy … You brought up God of the Gaps, so let's look at it...…... Deistic Universe, Fine tuned Universe? What would a Non-finetuned Universe look like? With what other Universes have you compared the current known Universe? .. I'm going to jump into this , even though we have not agreed on the meaning of the term Deity. Physicist do Not, at present, know what initiated the Plank Epoch. If you believe that a Deity Willed the expansion of our known Universe, you are using a God of the Gaps Argument. In other words, the God that you believe exists, can do anything, and currently Science has NO definite answer,, therefore God is the best answer. First you fabricate (or possibly believe the ancient stories) a God that is Necessary and Sufficient to create a Universe, then you use the fact that a Universe Does exists in reality, to prove that your God also Does exists in reality... This is Circular Reasoning. If a Deity is the only explanation you are willing to consider because you just can't comprehend any other possibility. ,,,, you are making a Argument from Incredulity. If a Deity is the only possible explanation because you don't understand, or don't know the other potential causes which have been proposed by Physicists,,, you are making an Argument from Ignorance. As for Religious Services being effective disease prevention,,,, I see a weakness in the studies..... . However, I WILL CONCEDE that being part of an accepting and supportive group, has health benefits. Do you think other activities can benefit health? Is it possible that meeting with close, like minded friends, on a regular basis, to talk and play Bridge, OR Polka Dance, could counteract disease development? .. how about Yoga? .. or Bowling league, with good buddies who always have your back? … Seems it's deadly to be alone, though I have no documentation.
@markdunphy4561
@markdunphy4561 5 жыл бұрын
Reasonable Speculation. Why is it necessary to compare with other Universes? Physicists know what would happen if you adjusted the physical constants of the universe by the tiniest amount - no life in the universe. Hence, the fine-tuning. One can conceive of essentially an infinite number of universes in which there is no life, and physicists have defined a rather incredibly narrow range of physical constants in which life is possible, in which we exist. If you mean maybe there's other universes in which Physics work totally differently, and two plus two is not four, then you've still not explained how our universe, in which we have our Physics, is still so unreasonably fine tuned. Have you considered that there might be an atheism of the gaps, in which one creates gaps - such as other universes of which we have zero evidence - to permit you to maintain an atheistic viewpoint, and avoid evidence that appears inconsistent with atheism. As Einstein said, the more he studied the Universe, the more he believed in God. As far as weekly religious attendance being equivalent to people getting together to play bridge, having companionship, etc, I think you should visit a Church service. The people have almost zero interaction with each other during the service. Weekly Church attendance is rather a marker of a serious religious life throughout the week , as the study discusses. Which explains why the Harvard group also found religious upbringing (again a predominantly Christian study population) was associated with better outcomes for children. So, I can look at the physical order of the Universe - at the best current evidence just as it is, and say it supports my belief that it is not random, but rather created by God for us. The atheist has to explain the creation and fine-tuning of the universe, by not looking at the universe as it is - but by speculating about how reality might be- that maybe there are other universes or other dimensions -- of which we have no have evidence -- that can explain everything. I think it was the last July issue of Nature that noted that the LHC and others had come up with zero evidence of supersymmetry, etc. You know where there is also a gap in the evidence? When you have a false hypothesis. Interesting that you mention Planck, a devout theist. Then there's deist/former-theist Hoyle, who coined the term Big Bang, when he was mocking LeMaitre, the priest who discovered the Big Bang. I'm a former agnostic. I began to doubt my doubts the more I learned the atheist arguments really have no merit, and became familiar with the positive benefits of Christian religious experience.

Great talk. The first questioner is trying to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to assume Paul is of questionable character because he was a murderer and use that to undermine Paul's testimony about seeing Jesus. But we only know Paul killed early Christians unjustifiably because of Paul's testimony. So he's assuming Paul's testimony is reliable to show he is unreliable. That's obviously incoherent and is just cherry-picking evidence.
@snuzebuster
@snuzebuster 4 жыл бұрын
No, that's not cherry picking. It would be a wobbly argument, except we don't only know of Paul's being involved in the killing of Christians from Paul. It's also written of in Acts. You are also assuming that the null hypothesis is that Paul should be trusted, but given the propensity of human beings for dishonesty, for any extraordinary claims made by anybody, the null hypothesis should be that they are false. The burden of proof is not on the skeptic when it comes to extraordinary. That's a sound epistemic rule of thumb.
@snuzebuster
@snuzebuster 4 жыл бұрын
@razumfrackle You're not applying the rule o thumb known as the criteria of embarrassment. That is it makes sense to think Paul was telling the truth with regard to his involvement in the persecution of Christians, because it is not something one would have some interest in claiming if it were false. It can further be reasonably inferred that it is not something he could have kept a secret. These points do not apply to his other claims and the extraordinary nature of those claims make skepticism warranted. Maybe a better point: consider this conundrum: If Paul was lying about the murder, then he's a liar. If he was not lying then he's a murderer. Either way his character is seriously called into question. So, at the very least bringing up the point he claimed to have taken part in the murder of Christians is a no-lose rhetorical move.
@snuzebuster
@snuzebuster 4 жыл бұрын
@razumfrackle Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I'd agree that Paul may have taken part in the killing of Christians w/o feeling he was doing anything wrong as he had the sanction of the high priest. Obviously later he had a change of heart. I've never personally made the argument that it proves Paul's testimony can't be trusted. I was just pointing out that the argument i not incoherent. I also don't doubt that the apostles believed Jesus was risen and that Paul might have gotten the particular formulation in Corinthians 15 from some one or another of the apostles. He also could have consciously or subconsciously invented it for all we really know. But even if it is authentically from the original apostles, that in itself is not enough to make a claim of a supernatural event credible and established as an historical fact. If it were I should have to believe that the Angel Moroni gave gold tablets containing the Book of Mormon to Joseph Smith. Certainly the fact that the gospel accounts of the empty tomb story contradict Paul's formulation and each other is counter indicative of the truth of much of it. How on earth could eyewitnesses or even close associates of eyewitnesses not know whether they met Jesus in Galilee as Matthew claims or in Jerusalem as Luke and John claim? How could they no know whether the women told no one about the empty tomb, which is the very last claim made in the earliest mss of Mark, or whether they had seen angels and Jesus himself who and they told the apostles to go to Galilee to meet him (Matthew) or two disciples (not Peter) met Jesus first and then the he met the rest in Jerusalem (Luke). Another thing that makes no sense is that Mary would have returned from the tomb and told the men she knew not where they had taken Jesus's remains (John) if as in the Matthew and Luke she had met angels who and/or Jesus himself (Mattew/Luke) who had told them (Matt) or not (Luke) that he was gone to Galilee an he should meet them there. It's totally irreconcilable schmozzle more like what one would expect from different tellings of a legend than the testimony of eyewitnesses.

Paul had three different versions of the Road to Damascus story, two Roman witnesses who were pagan arresting officers for the Jewish Law, & he didn't meet the requirements for apostleship as stated right at the beginning of the book of Acts. He also refused to leave a congregation/house that he had entered when the householders rejected his message. He claimed Jesus/Yeshua came to him as an angel of lights/no clouds which Paul himself later connects to the deception of Satan. Paul appointed apostles under him & never took off his earthly hats. Paul made his own kingdoms & never forsook the world. I follow the Son, not Paul/Saul. Just like Satan, he can appear to anyone & everyone as will draw them to his teachings, which vacillate depending upon the audience. That's fork-tongued. Satan often tells enough of the truth to steer people away from the truth. What a great deception if mainstream Christendom is using Pauline writings & misunderstood wisdom & twisted manipulations of Pauline writings by theologians in order to send many off into destruction. Oops! That's exactly what Peter foretold would happen. John has been warned, If anyone heals in my name, Don't prohibit him. He will be judged. If not prohibited, such are not quick to say bad things against me. Paul was tolerated. Jesus had warned of Paul's arrival on the scene, but not as most think. Paul is the sower of tares in the night. Peter had had a vision before the servants of the Romans needing him to come to bear witness, unclean animals vision. Yet, no vision for Paul? The Apostles had to approached about Paul? Someone so important, yet no announcement of his apostleship & no documentation & Paul spent the rest of his life whining that he wasn't being acknowledged as an apostle. Why? Because he wasn't one. Let you answer be yea or nay, anything more is of the Evil One. Paul was an antichrist as far as I can read in the scriptures. I won't judge him, however, since I can not be sure that he wasn't a work in progress. Sure, Peter called him a brother with wisdom, instead of an approved Apostle with eyewitness testimony. Yet, Peter didn't write Paul off either. Even Jesus/Yeshua didn't call Judas anything but Friend even after he brought the arresting soldiers that Yeshua already knew would be on the way & for what purpose. Not my place to judge the futures of those two individuals. But I will say that the fruits of Paul aren't looking so good. Judas at least attempted to repent & return the coins, Paul, to the contrary, boasted about his involvement in the stoning to death of Stephen decades after the fact. Follow the Son. And the Son said Follow no man other than me. Take with a grain of salt anything Paul says & compare that with what the Son said.

I know he speaks on the phone with someone he calls "Dr. Craig", and I assumed it was William Lane Craig, but I don't know if his full name was ever used. I suppose I could look on IMDB and see if the actor was playing WL Craig. I really liked the movie, but I like conversion accounts, and Strobel has become such a warrior for Christ, we all knew how the story ended before we watched his journey. Enjoy it, Jennifer!

*Roy Schlamp* Please listen closely, Roy. You might be misunderstanding what Habermas is saying. It sounds like he's claiming that just because Ehrman accepts a limited number of Paul's writings, that doesn't prove the books he accepts as authentic are true and/or inspired. It sounds like a gentle rebuke of any Christian who tries to make such claims, based on Ehrman's scholarship. Fortunately, most of us can separate the goats from the sheep, and it's easy enough to see how sloppy Bart is in his claims, knowing that Muslims (who love him), and atheists (who love him) are too lazy to fully investigate (and they have no guidance from the Holy Spirit). Ehrman is proof of nothing if we use Christian standards, and that's my understanding of what Habermas is claiming. Paul's 2nd letter to Timothy (3:16) claims "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,"

So you would say it is less reasonable to doubt the resurrection than to believe it? As long as there are conceivable naturalistic explanations (and there are), I don't believe we are justified in rationally preferring a supernatural one. Sure, if God can be shown to probably exist based on other arguments, then the probability of the resurrection goes up, but the same is true about the contrary, if God can be shown to probably not exist (based on other scientific and philosophical arguments) then the probability of the resurrection goes down.

What Christians propose isn't even 'evidence' at all, they are only 'claims', and are the least credible kind of claim: from anonymous, biased scribes who weren't eyewitnesses, found in manuscripts dated hundreds of years after the supposed events that are filled with proven fiction, forgery and fraud, written by other anonymous, biased cult members. "Some guy said so" would not be evidence that what he said was true, even if he was a known, credible person. And certainly, "some anonymously-written text says so" does not make the claim true, as Christians would agree about the Quran, the Book of Mormon, the Bhagavad Gita, and every other religious text other than theirs. And yet this is all Christians have to support their absurd death cult. All their faith claims go back to the least credible kind of sources. The more a person investigates the actual facts, the more it all falls apart. For instance, this absurd video claiming "evidence" for the resurrection story, which is simply "some anonymous member of my cult said so". Calling unsupported claims "facts" is a common technique of liars and frauds. None of these are facts, or would be considered "evidence" in a court, where they have strict standards regarding what qualifies as evidence. For instance, no one could be convicted of a crime if the only "evidence" was an anonymously-written note claiming they did a crime, let alone if that note contained absurd supernatural claims, such as that an angel told the anonymous author this information, etc. Right?

@Kuffar Legion "Why do you act religionist?" Do you mean why am I Christian? Sure Because I know I am a sinner in need of a Saviour. He forgave my sins that were many. No other religion in the world offers that- they require people to do A B and C to gain the approval of their god and religion. With Christ 'It is by grace that ye are saved.' We are not saved by our good works. 'What does faith do for you that is different from hopeful confidence in self and others?' Faith in Jesus gives me hope for the future. The questions of what is the meaning of life, who am I?, why am i here? where am I going? are settled ultimately through Jesus Christ. I was involved in a car accident and nearly died. I believe God spared my life for a reason: to testify of him. If you've ever heard of people having near death experiences, pay close attention, they almost always talk about walking into a white light. In my case I was spinning into a black hole. Thankfully I had been asleep in the car, so wasn't tense with fear from the oncoming crash. I woke up to a chilly morning as firemen were cutting through the car to get me out of the wreckage. You may not think it now, but consider yourself privileged to have been warned. There is a life after this one. What you decide about Jesus Christ determines your eternity. Peace.

The bible has been debunked as fiction by science, archaeology and biblical scholarship, but you can prove that it’s false yourself with a simple experiment. First, the bible claims that Jesus appeared to people after his supposed death (1 Cor. 15:3-8), including the claim that he appeared to 500 people at once, and appeared to Paul. So Jesus supposedly proved his resurrection by appearing to people, showing that it was necessary to appear to people in order to provide EVIDENCE that he was really resurrected. Further, the gospel stories claim: "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" (Matt. 21:22). “Whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you" (John 16:23), "whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (Mark 11:24). So go ahead and set up your video camera and pray for Jesus to appear to you right now! If my atheism is correct, nothing will happen. But feel free to prove it to yourself that Jesus is imaginary. 1) If Jesus is real, and is a god, he COULD appear to you, or to anyone. 2) He supposedly appeared to others in ancient stories that we have no evidence for. 3) Jesus supposedly promised to appear in response to prayers. 4) FACT: Regardless how much you pray or ask...he won't appear. The most likely explanation for the above? Jesus won’t appear because he CAN’T. Fictional literary characters can't hear prayers or do anything in real life. Praying to Jesus is no different than praying to Spider-Man or Gandalf. Feel free to list your excuses for why Jesus doesn't appear. I'll play 'logical fallacy bingo' with your responses. Also, why am I accurately able to predict the outcome in advance? “The predictive power of a scientific theory refers to its ability to generate testable predictions.” By the way, liars like to say, “Do not put my lies to the test,” but those telling the truth don’t mind if you validate their claims. @Gerard Jones Christian liars LOVE to claim they are 'former atheists'. But you can PROVE that the bible is fiction and that Jesus is imaginary with a simple scientific experiment. The anonymous scribes who wrote the fictional gospel tales claim that Jesus said: "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" (Matt. 21:22). “Whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you" (John 16:23), "whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (Mark 11:24). I stood there in awe, unable to move, and then the vail rolled back down and I started screaming "Did you see that!" and pointing up in the sky. What is overlooked by even Christians is the thing that amazed everyone who saw the "empty" grave. See what an impression it produced on the mind of John. He “saw and believed.” Why did the arrangement of the grave clothes cause John to believe? It wasn’t the absence of the body but it was the arrangement that caused him to believe. If the body had been stolen, and enemy would not have spent the time to take the body from the clothes and so arrange them. When Peter and John entered the sepulcher, they did not see the body of Jesus; but they did see the grave clothes. And they saw the clothes in a certain order -- “the linen clothes lying,” and the napkin for the head being “in a place by itself.” And “wrapped together.” These graves clothes were arranged in such an order that they produced an effect that gave a scene that provide evidenced that Christ’s arose from the dead. They were lying exactly as the body had lain in them. The grave clothes were in exactly the position the body had occupied. these wrappings were wound around the body of our Lord, beginning at the feet, and ending at the head. A napkin that was tied around it protected the head and face itself. When John saw these “linen clothes lying” undisturbed, just as they had been when the body of Jesus lay within them, but now there was no body, the linen clothes were empty! John 19:39-40 tells us that Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea brought about a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes spices and wound the body of Jesus in the cloth wrappings with the spices. As they wrapped the cloth strip around and around Jesus’ body, they poured in 100 pounds of spices into the wrappings and upon the body. All these liquid spices would soon harden and would cause the cloth wrappings to become an encrusted cocoon around the body of Jesus. Al the wrappings followed the contours of the body; it would be a tight solid covering that would protect the body. There was no humanly possible way to remove the body without destroying the wrappings. The disciples saw the “linen clothes lying” -- uncut, undisturbed, lying just as they had been, yet they were empty, a hollow shell. That is what convinced them that Jesus had been resurrected and that his body had not been stolen. For centuries the focus has wrongly been placed on an empty tomb. The miracle is actually the empty grave clothes.

@Dd S Actually we do. Virtually every New Testament scholar (even the ones that are atheist) believe Jesus was a real person, he died on a cross, he was buried in a well known place, and the tomb was later found to be empty. They agree on these things in part because there were other texts found that are not a part of the Bible, but they corroberate what the Bible says. Not all NT scholars are believers, but they all agree that people at least thought they saw the risen Jesus. People much smarter than you or I have established these things as fact. You can try to explain them away, you can say these people had a mass hallucination, or they only thought they saw Jesus, or the body was stolen, I really don't care. But the evidence suggests Jesus was real, was crucified, was buried, and the body went missing. How you interpret that evidence is up to you.

@Dd S as a side note, we have more textual evidence for the existence of Jesus than any other historical figure. If you're an atheist, it shouldn't bother you that He existed because believing He's the Messiah is different than acknowleging His existance as a man. I happen to believe He is Lord, but that's me, not you. You are entitled to believe what you want.

Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly" (Mark 8:23-25). So Jesus is God, but has to "spit on the man's eyes" and use his magic mucus power to heal him?!! Disgusting! And then your demigod CAN'T EVEN GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME? He has to try a SECOND TIME to heal him! Really? And he's all-knowing, but has to ASK THE GUY whether he can see? @@evanwickham7743 But videos like this are unnecessary because you can PROVE that the bible is fiction and that Jesus is imaginary with a simple scientific experiment. So go ahead and set up your video camera and pray for Jesus to appear to you right now! If my reality-based worldview is correct, nothing will happen, which I can predict in advance. But feel free to prove it to yourself that Jesus is imaginary. To counter any excuses, the bible claims that Jesus appeared to people after his supposed death (1 Cor. 15:3-8), including the claim that he appeared to 500 people at once, and appeared to Paul. So the authors of the gospel tales knew that it was necessary to PROVE claims by having Jesus appear to people after his death in order to provide EVIDENCE that he was really resurrected. 1) If Jesus was real, and a god, he COULD appear to you, or to anyone. 2) He supposedly appeared to others in ancient stories that we have no evidence for. 3) Jesus supposedly promised to appear in response to prayers. 4) FACT: Regardless how much you pray or ask...he won't appear. The most likely explanation for the above? Fictional literary characters can't hear prayers or do anything in real life. Jesus won’t appear because he CAN’T, and because the authors of the gospel tales were liars. Praying to Jesus is no different than praying to Spider-Man or Gandalf, or any other fictional character in a book. Right?

Humble, non self-celebrative speaker, who seems to purposely not use highly elaborated speech in order to not limit his presentation to intellectuals. I honour that. Yet that lecture was very convincing - the facts are undeniable. But atheists will not let facts get in the way of their beliefs. Religion is based on belief, atheism is based on unbelief. Both are not scientific facts but religious statements. Why do they falsely claim to be the voice of science? Atheism - evolution - are irreligious beliefs not scientific facts. People believe in evolution like we believe in creation. Also, one cannot know God intellectually, no more than you can fall in love mathematically. Maths cannot prove love, nor disprove love. Wrong tool. Dr Habermas hits the nail on the head when he states that 75% of atheists have emotional reasons for being so. I reckon that figure is far higher. Then H comes back with "actually yes they *do* record miracles", and that if you dismiss the gospels because they include miracles, then you have to dismiss the sources for Alexander the Great on the same grounds. Do you see the bait and switch? What historians *actually* do is they throw out the Alexander miracle claims, sift through the rest to try to pin down the facts, and debate the merits of those. They don't take it all or nothing. But that's what H is trying to get you to do with the Gospels. During the time that Jesus was supposed to have lived, there were many profits peddling early Christianity. The name occasionally referred to as Yeshua by people of Jewish background, was a common name used at the time. The name Jesus is also a transliteration of the Hebrew "Joshua". There are many accounts of people not related to Jesus Christ that bare that name, at the time he is supposed to have lived. So, the big question is which one was he, and was he in fact the son of God? There are only anonymous accounts of this man, with NO physical evidence of his actual existence, let alone that he had magical powers and was able to be resurrected after death. Which is the bedrock of Christianity. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. The burden of proof has not been met that the resurrection was an historical FACT. Just as a foot note... Some earlier religions had characters that were born of a virgin and were killed and resurrected. Quite a coincidence wouldn't you say?

There are many accounts of people not related to Jesus Christ that bare that name, at the time he is supposed to have lived. I was quite relieved when he included the deceit about Alexander. Alexander had a biographer with him, the accounts are instantaneous. The plus 300 bit is the youngest complete copy. He doesn't apply the same rules to the Alexander evidence that he applies to the biblical sources. Very deceitful, I would say he might go to hell for breaking the commandment about bearing false witness, but then hell doesn't exist... I also don't hear people going around making outrageous claims about Alexander being a god! Also nice how he started by saying he wasn't going to use the New Testament to prove anything and then used nothing but the New Testament.

At best the Pauline epistles are just a bunch of hearsay from a religious nut who never met an earthly Jesus and claims to have gotten all his information through divine revelation: "The gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ" (Galatians 1:11-12). That's a trustworthy source? If I claim that Jesus appeared to me and revealed that you're a serial killer, and I went to the cops and told them that, do you think they'd arrest you? That would be considered 'evidence' that you were a serial killer? LOL!

I've spent my life in the persuit of science and logic, and have a few scientific degrees, and would only add to what you said by saying that from an ACTUAL scientific point of view, I agree with you. Anyone who claims science is in conflict with the findings of faith can only get there by ignoring evidence and refusing to follow where the data goes, which wouldn't be scientific at all.... That man lived. That man died. That man predicted to the hour the time of his own resurrection. That man was resurrected as predicted. With all of that being the 'difficult' part, I think it is 'easy' to take him at his word for his motivation in doing so... His absolute intention was to be the final sacrifice to God to atone for all sin, with the only condition being that you accept that gift and allow that he paid for your sin.

I have an open mind and a spiritual life, but frankly I don't see an argument here that overturns historical skepticism. The argument in effect rests upon the authority and credentials of the biblical scholars that Habermas cites. But if a generation of scholars was really transformed by the latest scholarship, then why has Ehrman, who is part of that scholarship and presumably understands it as well as Habermas, become a skeptic? At the end of the day, it's still a matter of faith, and always will be.

George Chen I don't believe you heard him correctly, because your statement is clearly incorrect in light of what he stated, in order to communicate the validity of his sources and scholarship on this subject. If you disagree that's your choice and your right, but you can't disagree based on lack of evidence, which would therefore make this a 'faith only' argument. He spent his entire lecture explaining why you should believe him based evidence confirmed by secular and Christian scholars alike, not because he believed it to be true by faith. And he illustrated how every historian exercises their discipline in that subject to verify anything! The fact that you object to his information with 'it's a matter of faith' shows that you haven't fully taken in the information he presented. Open you eyes and ears and listen again. If you apply your objection to Jesus, please apply it also to all history. I doubt that you would attack Roman history using the same objections, or get any different result.

@River Scott Hello. I'll try to answer your question. First off, the religious leaders, after the crucifixion, asked permission from Pilate to put guards outside the tomb. They dont want the apostles stealing the body and saying Jesus was resurrected. But Jesus got resurrected anyway and the guards fled for fear. During Roman times, they put a seal on the tomb to know if it has been tampered with.The religuous leaders knew the tomb was secured by the guards and the seal. But when the resurrection happened, they have to bribe the soldiers to invent a different story. Mary Magdalene and other disciples did check, and when they found the tomb empty, they asked if Jesus' body has been moved. They were later informed by the angels and even Jesus himself about the resurrection. Second, the verse 1 Corinthians 15:15 must be understood in a context. If you read the whole chapter you will see that Paul was making a point. He was saying that the resurrection did happen. For example in 1 Cor. 15:3-8. He summarizes eyewitness accounts of Jesus appearing to the disciples, early believers, and Paul himself. He wasnt denying the resurrection at all. In 1 Cor 15: 12, we see there that not all followers of Jesus believed in resurrection. And so Paul rebuked them saying that faith in Jesus would be in vain and his preaching false if there is no resurrection.
@bunnylady6758
@bunnylady6758 3 жыл бұрын
@River Scott Hello. I am no great philosopher but I will try to share what I know in simple terms. How do I know that the resurrection happened? Because Jesus said so. Why should I trust Jesus? Because he rose from the dead. Let me layout my argument for Jesus. 1. There are eyewitness accounts of Jesus' crucifixion. A. The Roman soldiers knew how to crucify. They knew what they were doing. And they get severe punishment for not doing their duty. B. There is no good reason to doubt the eyewitness accounts of the crucifixion. 11. There are eyewitness accounts of Jesus' resurrection. There is no good reason to believe that these eyewitnesses lied about what they experienced. A. They gained nothing from said ruse (money, power,prestige) B. They were willing to die for this truth, making them very credible eyewitnesses. C. There is no good reason to believe that these eyewitnesses were all mentally insane. How could so many people in one place and in one time all of a sudden be insane when there was no evidence of pre-existent mental illness? And even if this be the case, how credible is it that so many mentally insane people got their stories straight? 111. Only three groups had access to the body of Christ: The Romans, the Jewish enemies of Christ, and the disciples of Christ. A. The Romans would not fake the resurrection. They were the ones who crucified Jesus. B. The Jewish enemies of Christ were the ones who wanted him dead in the first place. They were even paranoid about a theft of the body and demanded that the Roman authorities secure the grave. C. Despite the paranoia of the Jewish leaders, there is no good reason to believe that the disciples of Christ would fake his resurrection. Most of them displayed incredulity to his claims of a death and resurrection. Nor would they gain anything except persecution. IV. Jesus claimed to be true God. A. There is no evidence or reason that Jesus would lie about this. 1. Jesus did not gain anything from such a lie, except death 2. There is no evidence that Jesus was crazy. B. Jesus proved his divinity by rising from the dead and performing miracles for which there were credible eyewitness accounts. V. Jesus declared the Bible to be the innerrant Word of God. A. Jesus declared the Old Testament to be the Word of God. B. Jesus sent the Spirit to inspire the New Testament writers. VI. Since Jesus is divine, we ought to believe what he says about the inerrancy of the Bible.

Interestingly enough, the empty tomb itself is actually the least important piece of evidence for the Resurrection. People knew, even back then, that resurrection is not a usual occurrence. If you found an empty tomb, your conclusion is naturally either that 1) you went to the wrong tomb or 2) that the body was moved. And this is exactly what the disciples first believe before they actually encounter the risen Christ.

The very motive of Paul to check that he was preaching a correct message is incredible. It shows that he was an extremely concerned, conscientious person. This is wonderful evidence of his morality. A prideful man generally will not even check his knowledge for fear he could be wrong. This is also evidence for Paul's humility. He would have had to know that their message was different if Paul had a motive to correct those who claimed to have the same message. Amazingly his message is the same. So if you can produce evidence that Paul's motive was simply to boast only then could his character be questioned. But it would not change the fact that he was verifying a specific message. His character under examination only positively reinforces his absolute sincerity.

It is quite simple. ( as is the essence of Jesus Christ ): either the Bible is 100% truth ( for God cannot lie, for He is light and in Him is no darkness ) or the Bible is a bunch of baloney and we can throw it in the dustbin. I used to believe the latter, after 35 years in my life and after been rescued out of 3 deadly situations ( after me calling for Him ) I believe the Bible is 100% true. For He spoke to me and He touched me. Now everyone must look for him or herself and search God. Don't just reject Him. Search ! But search Him diligently and He will show Himself. Because He loves you. That is also the reason that He will never force you to love Him or even believe and trust in Him.

Luke Wilbur In one of the greatest crises in my life He told me to look in the mirror to find the answer to my question "why". I immediately knew what He meant and confessed that I had been a total idiot. And then I asked "and now what ?". Jesus Christ told me this: "tell Me what you really want" . I knew it was He, because I asked my question directly to Him. I said that I did not believe that because I did not deserve to be granted that. He told me another 2 times "tell Me what you really want". I decided to ask very specific what I wanted and that I would like to see it within a 30 day period. ( how arrogant and totally out of order ). The following period it seemed totally the opposite would happen. What I asked seemed impossible and very unprobable. Then it happened ! The 29th day everything changed and the 30th day it came to pass. Exactly as I had asked ! My wife came home after being gone for 29 days. And we are happier than ever before. And this is only one example of more miracles He did in my life. God bless.

The fact is that people will sometimes get lucky breaks when stuck in tough situations. Some will not. That's just how life goes for everyone - whether you believe in god or not. It's ridiculous to use your chosen god as the reason (explained earlier). Furthermore, when you attribute your fortunes to god, you make him look like a monster for not granting the same fortune to more deserving victims. It also makes you look self-centered and narcisistic. In an unconscious way, you're saying that you were more deserving or the "others" had it coming. Either way your god doesn't come way looking good to an unbiased observer.

Samiam 666 You’re literally ignorant to your own belief, pretty much all atheist claim that Jesus isn’t real, simply because they don’t want to admit that HE actually rose from the dead. The most funny thing is, most atheist believe they came from a Big Bang which can not be proven in any way whatsoever, but find a hard time believing in the Lord Jesus, it’s simply because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.

Samiam 666 I want you to explain something to me, when I was around 15 I’ve always wanted a sister, I’m not sure why, I’ve just always wanted a sister all my life, one night I was walking my dog outside and I randomly decided to pray about it, I prayed to God and asked something along the lines of “If I have a sister in heaven please give me a sign” and I kid you not, the very moment I opened up my eyes I saw two shooting stars, the absolute very moment my eyes opened, I couldn’t help but break down in tears and sob because my prayer was answered at the very moment. A few years down the road I’m on a hike with my mom, I talk to her about me wanting a sister and all, she then brings up that my dad had a daughter with his first wife before they got divorced, right then and there I realized that I had a sister and this goes back to where my prayer was answered by God. This is not a coincidence, as I myself never knew my dad had a daughter, which means I had a “half sister” but overall a sister in general, but she died as a baby, around 8 months if I can remember correctly, and according to God’s Word all babies go to heaven. I have many more stories that I could tell, even ones that include being healed from pain in the name of Jesus, but this stuff isn’t fake man and I’ve truly experienced these things.

This was incredibly interesting. The resurrection of Christ is essential to the meaning of the Christian message. As see it the historical resurrection idea does not mean necessarily a return to flesh and blood as we know it. If it did mean that then the risen Jesus would not be able to change his appearance so as not to be recognized, walk through walls and change his appearance back to what he looked like at the time of crucifixion. Physical bodies do not do that. Have you known anyone who does these things? The resurrection, while historical, cannot mean that Christ became a revived corpse just like he was before he died. It must mean something else.
@hermenutic
@hermenutic 10 жыл бұрын
I Iook to Christ for 'light' to live by. If my faith is fixed on the cross I find a corpse. If I stay there at the cross in my faith all I see is Jesus suffering the wrath of God against sinners including me If I look to where Christ is now, seated at the right hand of God, I am raised together with him to sit in heavenly places IN CHRIST JESUS. That's better in my book. I cannot find how a literal flesh and blood resurrection is in harmony with the Christ which is a life giving spirit. I Cor: 15:45 www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+15%3A45&version=KJV This doctrine of the resurrection has taken some hard theological hits and twists and turns in the way different Christians have explained it. It's not cut and dry. The reasoning above is how I had to make sense of it in order for me to accept it. The incarnation of Christ was absolutely necessary in order to enter into solidarity with the human experience. It was a wonderful thing he decided to do on mankind's behalf. But the incarnation is only part of the story. He is no longer incarnate according to Paul. He is a life giving spirit in the heavenly places if there is any truth in Paul's description and explanation as to the meaning of the Christ Event. I've come across some who think very little of Paul's theology. I like it a lot. biblehub.com/ephesians/2-6.htm

I think what you’re trying to do here is to try to show absurdity of belief in the sources Christians use, namely the Bible. However, I have to tell you that your method does not seem to be effective at all. Atheists have always paraded similar tactics. They bring up miracles and make them sound absurd and crazy as if they were totally impossible. If there was indeed a God, none of these miracles do not seem impossible at all. The atheists need to understand that even if they make miracles sound absurd, the theists could simply bring up the fact that God could make even the seemingly absurd possible.
