Nice job on a very informative video! We also have a 2023 Mach-E GTPE and we absolutely love it! We live in Minnesota and 90+% of the time we charge at home. The issues we have experienced charging away from home have been similar to what you documented. We are optimistic that charging infrastructure, battery technology and vehicle range improvements are coming that will make the “road trip” charging experience more pleasant. In the mean time, the pros outweigh the cons for us and we are enjoying EV ownership :)

Completely agree with this. If you can charge at home and cover most of your daily driving that way, an EV is awesome! It can do the occasional long drive, but that’s not where it shines. It is getting better though and getting access to Tesla’s network will help a lot.

Great video. Living in Los Angels, I've never changed tires because of the season. I have a '22 California Route One RWD with a 340-mil range. I chose it over the Model Y because of the horrible ride in the MY. After 27.000 miles, it is my favorite all-around car. Zero issues to date. Going on my first long road trip in a few weeks and looking forward to the adventure. I have had it for 18 months, and still haven't installed a level-two charger.

I just got my 23 Grabber Blue Mach-E GT(base) and I absolutely love it! I’ve gotten nothing but compliments on it since I’ve gotten it. All the reasons you listed are the reasons I bought mine. I wish that the trunk had the middle pass through for long items (for me, hockey sticks) so I wouldn’t have to let the seat down. As a former Tesla Model Y owner, this video is spot on! I’m excited to get my NACS adapter so I can supercharge at the Tesla Superchargers.

Good call. I'd take the Mach E over any Tesla personally. So many reasons, top are quality and service options, which you mentioned. Apple Carplay is a great feature for sure. The range on EVs has come a long way on recent years. People who travel outside the range of the vehicle is still a very small number. While that is an isuse, there are more and more L2 charging stations opened daily nationwide. Over 80% of EV drivers charge primarily at home. A L2 charger at home is a must have. The low end power of a EV is incredible and one-pedal driving is great. This leads to much less spent on maintenance, especially on brakes :) Buy snow tires for next winter. X-ICE or Blizzak.

1 major thing I do not like about my Mach - E. The side mirrors. You can not see who is along side of you if you adjust the mirror to just clear the back of your car. You need to move the mirror way out. Then you do not see if there is something approaching you. Changing lane is very scary. I added curved accerary mirrors. They help a bit.

This video was phenomenal! I've been doing my calculations in looking at a California Route 1 Mach-e with some very low rates for home charging. It's eye-opening to see how expensive it is to use public chargers in comparison, as well as the hurdles encountered when trying to bounce from charger to charger. I do know that we are a dual vehicle family, and it's likely we will keep an ICE vehicle for the long trips, as we live in the Southeast where the network still isn't very great. However, for daily driving, I think this is great! Thank you for doing this.

I know you said that sitting in the car while it charges is kinda weird, but it’s honestly pretty normal. I frequently see people sitting in their EV while charging. Personally, I just move from the driver seat to the passenger or back seat, then pull out my laptop and get some work done. Keep the music going over CarPlay, and enjoy the great sound system. You could even do some conference calls if you needed to. It’s a pretty wonderful mobile office.

I've got an EV in France (Renault ZOE 2021). I largely agree with everything you said. In France, EVs make even more sense due to $7.50/gallon for gas .

You learned the same thing learned when I tried to take a tesla to visit my family who lives out in the country an hour away from a fast charger. The infrastructure and technology just isn't there yet for these to be viable highway vehicles. These are city cars you drive all around town and plug in at night to get cheap fuel back in it. Then when you need to go on a longer highway trip you use some of those hundereds you're saving on fuel every month to either rent a gas car or buy a used Corolla hybrid or something similar for a second car. This weekend i took a 400 mile round trip to visit my family and rented a Nissan Altima that got 39 miles to the gallon on the highway. I put gas near my house and didn't have to put gas again until i got back home a couple of days later. $37. Plus $95 for the rental. If you only go out of town once every couple months you come out way ahead still

NH owner 23 Mach E CR1. Kudos for offering good info for all in real world. My choice to buy this was purpose specific. I have other vehicles to do day trips and spur of the moment adventures. Absolutely agree, a must have is a level 2 home (or workplace) charge station. My daily commute is 170 miles round trip. 53 miles of surface roads, averaging 50 mph and 32 miles of interstate 80 mph, all rolling NH hills. Leave in the morning at 90% charge and plug in at home end of day with 21 to 28% left on the meter. Coldest days around 77kw/h-about 2,2 miles per kw/h. Warmest days about 61kw/h so almost 2.8. That averages to about 2.5. I pay 22 cents per kw/h all in so approx $15.40 daily commute. My wife's car is a Fusion- 24 mpg combined. same trip fuel price $4.45 per gallon 7.1 gallons (premium fuel, turbo Ecoboost) costs $31.50. Mach E win. Less than half in fuel not to mention maintenance savings. Over the course of a month saving north of $320 fuel alone. I have never public charged. Too many nightmares. I'll reserve judgement on the agreement to use Tesla's network. Tesla owners don't seem too happy about expected congestion. OTOH, competition should improve the equipment reliability and convenience for all. I did not know until registration that NH surcharges $150 annually for highway use since I am not paying gas tax at the pump. Subbing because you put in the hard work for this vid.

@cableup1
@cableup1 6 ай бұрын
@@BostonCoachTaiwo Good point. I reviewed my policy adjustment and yes my rate did go up $470 dollars annually with the addition of the Mach E. I didn't trade so no jiggering the numbers to account for it replacing some other vehicle. That is about 40$ a month. I am old and my policy bundles a few properties and eight vehicles so YMMV. In my case $40 dollars out per month and $320 dollars in per month in fuel savings is a deal I can live with. Put another way, 150 for surcharge, and 470 for insurance is $620 annual added cost. 320 a month in fuel savings is $3840 annually. That number is subject to fuel cost at the pump so I'm not counting on a cost benefit of that magnitude but it's clear that for me, all things considered, an EV is simply good economics.

I.T. was my profession, so I understand the frustrations of technology. I live in StL, so around town it would be great. I’m concerned about getting out on a trip, and I plan to travel a lot now that I’m free. I can’t imagine going through what you did on your trip: charging so you can get a little further down the road to do it again? In 20 degree weather? I don’t even like buying gas in weather like that. Ha! The manufacturers must make some improvements and get more charging stations. I applaud your pioneering attitude and patience. If I was your age, I’d try it too, but not now. Thanks!

Great Video, We have a Chevy Bolt and a Model Y and like you we mostly charge on a level 2 charger at home and at work. We do enjoy planning our trips. The Tesla is a no brainer. It has pretty long legs and charges fast. With both cars we charge to 100% at home before leaving on trips that are about 380 to 400 miles. That will get us to where we are going and then we usually stop twice for short periods on the trip home. Sometimes we will go shopping or out to eat or watch a movie and charge all the way up. We use a lot of free destination chargers in Nevada when we are out and about. Example with my Chevy Bolt we spent $29.03 in charging at Electrify America and EV Range on our 384 mile round trip to Lake Tahoe last weekend. I have a premium account with Electrify America so I get a good rate along with some complimentary charges from time to time. I averaged 3.7 miles/KWH. Average freeway speeds were 70 MPH except the last 30 miles at 80 MPH. The alternative would be my F-150 that takes $140.00 of Premium to make the same trip. Huge savings.

Apples to Apples - If you are considering a Camry then a Hyundai Ioniq 6 or Tesla Model 3 long range would be the way to go. Much better range and efficiency than the GT (which I love and own!!). SUV to SUV - the Mach-e with Tesla adapter is the way to go. For all the ICE gear heads out there, one drive of an EV and you will be hooked. Also - Eric - because of the lack of gears - EV motor speed has a huge impact on efficiency and 75 - 80 mph driving burns a mad # of electrons. Slowing down just a bit, maximizing charge time at your first high speed charge would have reduced the number of trips and time to distance.

L2 home charger, Mach-e SR RWD. Currently a full charge driving 95% down to 20 could last 7-10 days. I prefer to set the max charge to 50% or 60% and plug in daily, so that the scheduled cabin heating works. The kids in the back seat really benefit from that. One road trip in summer was good. The chargers around here only top out at 50kW for DC charging. It's not mean to be a road runner. I drive more than 330 days around the city, and we use the hybrid ford escape for road trips over 600km. If we're only driving about 450 km between legs where we can charge, the EV doesn't suffer from too much of a time penalty. Hotels with chargers included help reduce charging costs as well.

My comment. Great video. I’m a guy from Europe which leaves in the us and knows the difference between German cars and things like Toyotas. Past week I was in a business trip and occasionally was introduced to Mach e none GT version ( Avis does not have intermediate car except Mach e) I was skeptical as its absolute unknown car in the unknown city Austin, Tx . I’m from Atlanta, Ga. Well it was impressive .. it has pretty solid suspension , acceleration, interior, climate ( I know it limited to some seconds but lineag is a cool). It can keep straight line which most of regular cars can’t do. I traveled each day around 30 mls and returned it with 39% of batter. I think based on climate and traffic in Austin for the week I can get at least one stop at gas station. Not a big deal but interesting. I found some nuances which I don’t like - small mirrors, weight is something I can feel during the breaking, better breakers need, lack of ventilated seats, need better seats and that it. What I,like - handling and steering, suspension, acceleration, nice Bo sound, it has trunk and second row. Thank you for exposing all these nuances in your vlog it’s very informative. I know this year they did some improvement by I do have a hope that next model year will get ventilated seats as in GA during the summer it’s a must.

This is my first EV. I love it! I think I do have range anxiety. I also think I have one pedal driving anxiety as well as Blue Cruise anxiety. Or shall I say I have not used those features yet? I've had the car for 2 months. I use it to get back and forth to work mainly The only downside I see to the vehicle is just distance. With this being said I do have an extended range vehicle. Let me first tell you guys that but when I say distance I mean I got a heavy foot. You know you have to pay attention to the vehicle because there are no gears normally when I look down at the speedometer. I'm at 90 mph. This car will go fast. I don't have a GT. I have a premium before I bought the vehicle. I looked into it. The premium has more of a range. I have a total of 340 mi of range but the distance thing is subject when it comes to speed now. And if you're a everyday person that drives at a normal rate of speed, you'll be fine. You'll see that you're good me. On the other hand, I burn through battery kilowatt hours or miles. One way for me to work would be 25 mi. I double that when riding at 90 mph. So let's say the car sees me driving 75 mi to working back home as far as charging I do charge to 100%. Will the car says $100 even though it's still receiving a charge? A slight charge to where it looks to me at my home charger but I only allow my vehicle to go down to 40% or in the late mid-thirties and then I charge again what I've noticed about all EVS the only ones you hear that catch on fire are Teslas. There was one Ford that actually caught on fire and the reason is because the battery was damaged. So this is why I chose a Ford Mach E

My 70 something parents had their ID.4 two years before we had our Mach-E, and they have taken it to the West Coast from Central Texas 3 times, and also another separate trip to Las Vegas from Central Texas. They stick pretty much exclusively to Electrify America because they got 3 years of DCFC with the purchase of the car, which sometimes causes non-optimal routing to stay on the EA network. But they don't mind it too much because they are retired. It will be interesting to see what happens when their free charging expires. One thing I will say on their car vs the Mach-E is that it's more efficient on the highway. Their car is RWD and ours is AWD. They routinely get above 3.0 miles/kwh and in the Mach -E I'm usually below 3.0 per Kwh and have gotten as low as 2.1 on a hot day into a stiff headwind. But the Mach-E is a lot faster, and we only have the Premium trim which goes 0-60 around 5 seconds vs yours does 3.7, IIRC. One thing you mentioned that you like, but I don't, is the on off button. It seems superfluous to me, just an unnecessary extra step. The Tesla doesn't have that and neither does the ID.4. but anyway. Subscribed, hope to see more trip reports.

I own a f150 lightning and a Mach-e. Agree with what you’ve said, and I’ve experienced it - first EV was a Kia niro EV and we ran out of range about 30 minutes from a charger; stopped at a place that had an external outlet, left them some cash in an envelope…. :-). Range estimate was wrong that day because of elevation change (overall from beach to home was 1000ft higher), lower temperature, rain. Local driving and driving within the state are good but I think I would hate driving a 1,000 mile trip. You learn to try to stick with certain brands - around here, on interstate, you can pretty much stick with electrify America and EVgo. Even those will often have 1 or 2 broken units but at least their pricing is consistent. You gain experience with these for repeating trips and learn how to judge actual range. Towing a camper with the f150 is generally BETTER than what people say, but mostly that’s because of speed. I see dramatic range differences with the camper based on speed differences of 60mph vs 70mph.

@@ericrjenningsabsolutely a Tesla would've made a huge difference. The Model Y is more efficient and can go further on a charge than your car. The Supercharger network is expansive and the in car navigation adjusts your stops automatically based on your current charge. It requires zero planning. You seem to be quite unfamiliar with how to use the navigation in your car to your advantage. A Tesla would've made the trip brainless for you. Not to mention that the Tesla charges faster and the chargers never fail and don't require an app. It takes 6 seconds after you plug your Tesla in for the charging to begin

I'm an electrician trying to become an EV technician! Something I want to add on to the battery thing: 50% is the sweet spot. It's not like a gas tank - filling it up all the way is a bad thing long-term. The closer a battery is to 50%, the happier it is. It's like your phone; charging it to 100% every night will kill the battery (something people wrongly attribute to planned obsolescence), but discharging it to 0% is just as bad for it. Keep the battery cool, and keep it close to 50%, and you'll have it for WAY longer. I only recently swapped out my decade-old phone, and the battery life was at 83%.

I did an overnight test drive in a Tesla, Model unknown. Fist I did not like the speedometer off to the side. those tiny cars flashing on each side of the speedometer was distracting. I was doing 103 mph and not knowing it until I turned my head and read it. A little thing NO AM radio. Next when I attempted to back into my garage. The side mirrors changed to look at the ground. I needed to look at the center display and two tiny side video mirrors. Now my dislikes with my 2 month old Mach -E. What idiot thinks I need to the lane indicator to be center and speedometer to the right. Second, you have to hunt for everything on the big screen. Like to change radio stations. The car does not come with a spare tire. They give you an air pump and puncture sealer. They never heard of a blowout. Now you need to call for a tow truck and purchase a tire and maybe a rim to continue your travels. This is minor but be aware of it. I had both knees replaced. They still hurt and not as flexible. You have to high step into the car. My Ford Mach-E extremely quite on the highway. Secondary roads very bumpy. Car is very comfortable. Longest distance traveled was 80 miles each way. They give you a panel style sight protection cover for back storage. It gets in your way when using the back area. I prefer the draw out style cover. Something new. When you push the button to open the front doors. They pop open about an inch. Nice design small handles to continue opening. Needed for back doors also. I got in an accident last week in my Tesla Model 3 Performance and it is likely totaled. I love my car, but the deals on the Mach-E GT are amazing. Even with all the Tesla discounts right now, Ford's zero percent financing is so great. I am tempted to get the Mach-E. I test-drove one and agree with you about the fit and finish. I was so impressed with the quality of the Mach-E! But the charging speeds and the laggy screen in the Mach-E are concerning.

Great video. Bought my Mach-e about the same time as you. Very disappointed in long distance travel. EV is just not there. You are spending an excessive amount of time planning your trip and stops. Perfect demonstration of “range anxiety”. Of course, I bought my EV for in town and home charging. The expense of supercharging on the road makes the economics of ownership negative. Even dealer admitted such. For another data point, the highway mileage in my neck of the woods dropped precipitously in 112 degree heat, but the a/c worked acceptably in car.

My truck lease is coming up and I've been looking at these Mache GT's. This video was great at explaining some stuff. I got the truck because I'm an idiot that liked big and roomy. I only commute. We never go anywhere outside of town. I'm at the end of 3 yr lease and I've only got 8k miles lol. I never tow anything, I never haul anything and I do 100% in city driving. I'm starting to think these would be a good fit. I'm just nervous that the depreciation of the car is a ton after you drive away. So if I did it, it'll have to be my only car for a long time. I think essentially every other electric seems to be better than a Tesla but after all the research I’ve done and videos watches with people describing their electric pros and cons I’ve made the observation from everyone that Tesla has it down. It’s have to get a Tesla only because their charging network is superior and makes life with an electric bearable. They also are able to resolve their car issues better than most. People have described issues with their mustang electric or Hyundai ioniq electric and have issues getting weird problems resolved. Thats another issue but for the charging alone worth getting the Tesla as much as hate to get one….

My problem is with the way you are supposed to drive an EV. With a gas car you fill it up to 100 (normally) and drive until you get to about 15-25% left in the tank. It is always recommended to have more than a quarter tank on road trips. 1) you never know where the next gas station (working) could be. 2) you could break down and need and engine to keep you warm… With an EV, you charge it to 80 and go to about 10 then fill up until you will reach your next designation at 10 percent. You don’t get the extra relief of having more range then you need without waiting an hour for it to get up to 90 or 100.

Interesting video on the Mach E. I have just sold my ipace after 18 months of use, just too much hassle when you go above say 200 miles. I had a 6-hour trip to Scotland last month and I only got 160 miles and had to charge 3 times taking a total of 2h 35mins. Charging on the road is twice that of fuel. Great car, love the EV but I am going to a Hybrid. Not sure about USA but EVs in the UK have dropped by at least 40% in the past 6 months. A 2-year-old Tesla Model 3 now sells for £22000. The charging network is all over the place in the UK, some work, some, don't, some use contactless and some don't. All in all, after 18 months it is just to inconvenient.

A long road trip in the cold will certainly make the EV experience the crappiest it can be. But you gotta ask yourself, how often will that be the case in my day to day use of the vehicle? Would your particular trip be different if you were doing it for the second or third time? You'd certainly avoid that price gouging Toyota charger, and be generally more efficient about where to stop and for how long. My point is, there are downsides to both kinds of vehicles, but we do get better at mitigating some of them with experience, so in the end it's more a matter of what's really important for you, and what's your day to day gonna be like generally.

All excellent points you make concerning adoption of an EV as an everyday vehicle. - in essence, it comes down to tradeoffs, generally speaking. However, we are at the very beginning of the transition from ICE vehicles to EV vehicles. The gaps in the fueling choices that increase costs and anxiety will decrease as the expected demand warrants the infrastructure. and technology improves even more, contributing to greater efficiencies and lowered costs. I'm reminded of my conservative brother-in-law who in the past dismissed solar panels on residential dwellings as luxury pipe dreams of lefty kooks. Now, years later, he will gladly explain to anyone that will listen how it is that he receives a check from the power company each month even though he leaves the doors and windows of his home open as he pleases. Having had the pleasure of driving a Ford Shelby Mustang Mach-E GT PE for a full two weeks that I recently rented from Hertz, whatever the tradeoffs, if I can afford to drive a similarly performing vehicle, I'm in for sure.

Well done video. As for the cost of the Mach-E GT Performance, while it is now about $62,000, a person should keep in mind that this car is very fast 0-60 (under 4 seconds). To get a gas powered Mustang this fast, one is looking at something like a Mustang Shelby GT500. Used prices of that car can be in the $80K range. As for driving an EV in winter in cold weather, on a road trip which requires several charging stops, many EVs are going to have a similar experience as the Mach-E in the video. Since your wife’s other vehicle is low mpg, I’d consider renting a car for such a trip or you might buy a low cost used third vehicle like a Corolla just for meeting trips. Another option is the new Prius which costs more new but it looks better and is faster.

In MachE you can choose to do one pedal or just drive it like an ICE and coast a lot, while relying on regen breaking to collect energy when you hit breaks. I think that's a great plus over tesla which doesn't have CRBS. Personally i think coasting and regen braking is more efficient than one pedal.
@johnluiten3686
@johnluiten3686 3 ай бұрын
Don’t where you get your Tesla info from, but they do regenerative braking. To my knowledge, all EV’s do so. Too much wasted energy otherwise. Tesla also does one pedal.
@chantzine606
@chantzine606 3 ай бұрын
@@johnluiten3686 Maybe it is a naming thing, I am referring to CRBS. Tesla has one-pedal driving where the motor collects energy and slows the car down, but this process is not triggered by the break pedal, but triggered by delicate foot control on the gas pedal. Tesla doesn't have CRBS. CRBS converts the light user input on the brake pedal to motor regen, and heavy break pedal input to physical brakes. This experience, unlike Tesla's, is much more similar to ICE, and IMHO, is more efficient as it allows coasting. Tesla's system would be stuck in a regen, accelerate loop when cruising, where the cycle is around 70% efficient.

@@chantzine606 Possible semantics, but in the Mach-e I was informed that regenerative braking always occurs-even when the brake is pressed, or not. So one pedal is the default for Tesla? My Mach-e even rates my braking performance as to maximizing the regenerative braking. Now there are 3 modes of driving you can set the Mach-e for, and the snappy one does the most regenerative braking when foot leaves the “gas” pedal, but I’m told all modes do regenerative braking. Indeed, if I want to “coast” as I normally would expect to see the car roll, I keep a bit of pressure on the “gas” pedal.
@chantzine606
@chantzine606 3 ай бұрын
@@johnluiten3686 For mache, whipser mode has no background-level motor regen. If you don't hit brake pedal nor the gas pedal, there is no motor regen, it is just coasting, like an ICE. In all MachE mode, hitting the brake pedal slightly only translates to motor regen. Only when heavy on the brakes, the physical friction break kicks in. This overall is much similar to an ICE and most efficient IMHO.

I don't think it's fair to directly compare the EV charge rates to raw gas prices. There's a reason that companies tend to reimburse 50-65 cents per mile (on a typical 30 mpg car would be about $15-$20 per gallon), and its not because they're being nice. The oil changes, transmission fluid changes, belt changes, brake maintenance, catalytic converter changes, etc. All that results in so much added cost. It's not unusual for ICE cars to hit you with check engine lights for $500-1000 maintenance items.

As someone weighing the pros and cons of making the switch, I keep seeing this talking point in discussions and I'm really left wondering what you people were driving. I do my oil twice a year for like 60 dollars a pop. Brakes like once every 3-4 years. The catalytic convertor should last 10 years(my previous car was 14 years old and I never changed it) The belts should last about 10 years Spark plugs would also go out around that 10 year mark. I get it can add up, but how much of that is falling on the second owner vs the first owner? You wouldn't expect to see any of the costlier items from a reputable brand until you were in years 8+ of ownership. For this to be a valid comparison you would have to assume the average EV owner keeps their car at least 8 years While most searches resulted in an average age of cars as 12.6 in the US. I was able to find one that said the average lenght of ownership was 8.
