I think that chemotherapy joke was actually making a broader point about how we gamble with someone else's life when we choose to have kids. "Luck of the draw" is exactly what it is. You can have the best genes in the world, it still doesn't eliminate the chances of creating a child that will suffer with some kind of disability (whether physical or mental) or condition. The difference with gambling on a football match, say, is you at least know the odds. With having children, you don't know the odds and furthermore you're gambling with someone else's money, literally their life savings. But forget all that because "I want kids".

Yes. Forcing someone into existence is very obviously a gamble, a gamble the one who has been brought into existence didn't consent to. It's not just c*ncer, but illness/sickness in general, as well as m*rder, r*pe, ab*se, expl*itation, discr*mination, w*r, experiencing natural disasters etc., the list is long and there is only so much we can do; at the end of the day it'll always be a gamble. One thing that would interest me is hearing the opinions of people who aren't ignorant of the gamble itself and are still willing to gamble. When is a unlucky "too unlucky", when is it "too risky"? Like, if there was a 50/50 percent chance your 2yr old kid gets c*ncer and suffers horribly for a few months before dyi*g an agonizing de*th, are those chances good enough for some people? If not, what is the magical number where people feel like it would be fair to gamble? 25%? 10? 1%? (Had to censor a lot of words, comment always got locked)

When someone calls me selfish for not wanting children I tell them it's actually selfish to WANT children. Think about it. No child asks to be born and the only reason you bring one into this world is because YOU want to be a parent. YOU want to leave a legacy, YOU want to be taken care of in your old age etc. I don't want a child because I can honestly say I don't want to be responsible for another person's life. When you become a parent you are tasked to help a tiny human being grow into a well adapted adult. Do most parents even understand what a massive undertaking that is? You have to sacrifice a lot to give your kid all it deserves: money, time, dreams, sleep, energy, your figure... I'd rather spread a bit of love to other people's children.

What they don't like to tell you, is all the stress and hardship and pain that having children causes you in the longterm. It's not all divine and beautiful. It's not like in books and movies. There is a lot of stress. A lot of screaming. A lot of money spent. A literal wall put up between you and your spouse that impacts your relationship, your sex lives, your happiness, your independent thoughts and dreams. You have to put it all on the sidelines, and that's assuming you are being a GOOD parent. If you want to continue life as you did before having kids....feel free. But you are guaranteed neglecting your children, and all your friends and family will make sure to point that out to you. It's a hot mess. Your life is over. Society doesn't do a good enough job of explaining this sacrifice to people, which is why a lot of people become parents who genuinely didn't want to be. They did it out of impulse and just tolerates the consequences, or they did it because of the pressure their family and society as a whole put on them to have kids. Of course statements like this will upset people who are currently parents, because it gives them buyers remorse. But there are a lot of things parents say to try and make childless people feel bad for not having kids. It's a two-way street.

I don't even understand the concept of calling it 'selfish' not to have kids! Right, 'cause it's so righteous to make a kid when you're not even in a position to provide them with a good, stable life! I always thought I will have a family one day and am prepared to give all my love & devotion to them and do my utmost best to make them happy. But at 31, with my family getting on my back about it not having happened yet and me not even having a stable relationship at all... I feel like I'm not even close to reaching such a point in life. It's easy to 'make kids', that's the easiest thing and anyone can do it. The real responsibility comes after - can you actually provide for a stable, happy life for your kids, growing up in a stable home with a healthy family? I wish I could, but I'm nowhere even close at the moment. So in my opinion having kids right now would be selfish, not the other way round!
@chrismacleod9326 Жыл бұрын
Conception isn’t necessarily easy and in fact couples not being able to have kids can be detrimental to one’s emotion and the relationship itself. @KarrieDreammind5 Жыл бұрын
@chrismacleod9326 Yes, you're right. I take that back. It's not 'the easiest thing in the world' for anyone and it's quite a tragedy when a couple can't conceive when they want to, whatever the reason may be. 😢

The only good thing really with having kids, is that you have more people beside you supporting you when you get old... But is it a guarantee that you'll have that? Coz lets face the truth, depending on how good or bad you are in parenting, the chances can be highly unlikely....
@Hoganply5 жыл бұрын
It's not about that - I'd rather kill myself than be a burden. It's about providing an opportunity for a wonder-filled existence to someone that wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity. Beyond that, it's as selfish as entering into a close relationship with anyone.
@TheTruthKiwi5 жыл бұрын
@@Hoganply I agree that your reason is much better than Karl's, ethically anyway. @Hoganply5 жыл бұрын
@@TheTruthKiwi True. It's like a tree falling in the forest; if they're not their to miss it, is it valuable? When you ask why people had children, it usually starts with "I want." Or the amazingly selfish reason of, "Who will take care of you when you're older?" There's no guarantee your kid will take care of you or even be able to provide care. I never understood how not having children makes someone selfish. I've always thought it to be a very smart and sound decision if you know they're not for you. I ask people whether they'd be willing to help me financially/mentally/physically/and emotionally support a child, since they're so insistent on me having one. @Brutal Honesty Nobody cares. Classic mombie who writes a wall of text to romanticize the selfishness. If it helps you sleep better, go on, still hypocritical. Even more so when you project assumptions on a stranger to make you feel better because you risk breaking your bubble. Want an assumption? I bet you believe in God and higher purposes too. Because if you didn't then maybe you would've realized no amount of whatever love excuses bringing a brand new soul to suffer in a fucked up world for your own selfish gratification.

@Brutal Honesty Awww, that's cute. Touched a soft spot? Was I right with God? You know what you do in here? Projection. You didn't like the mirror I put in front of you so you blame me for what you do yourself. Hypocritical the 4th time. You answer on a child free comment, dismissing another person for a thoughtful life decision, praising yourself to the sky in a text wall and claiming you don't care. Sure. Nobody asked for a self-praise from you. Tell that in your sleep in Lala Land, but that and imaginary God won't save your kids from life's suffering, from traumas, death and all the shit you condemned them to.

Having kids is a choice, not compulsory in a modern relationship. We are already overpopulated. That’s why having kids is selfish.
