This episode broke my heart. I was waiting for you to get to this one. Ned's death took me by surprise, but it was 9 episodes in so I hadn't rooted for him as much as I did for Robb (and Catelyn) to avenge Ned, to rule the North, to unite the family. Made me feel so many emotions.
@tywinderbaum5283 Жыл бұрын
Totally. And Robb, Cat and Talisa dying had, at least to me, the added weight of "he was supposed to avenge ned, now who can/is going to..." and that Ned on top of everything that happened to him didn't even get justice and his wife, son and pregnant daugher-in-law who he never even got to meet all died as well. Ned's death as a precedent made everything more painful and not at all less.

1) It's tradition. You are no longer a summer child, you are a Man of Winter. 2) This episode alone is responsible for creating reactors and reactions on KZbin. People that read the book, knew this was coming and they would record their friends who didn't know and post their meltdown online. Then people starting recording full reactions to Game of Thrones and then it spread for other shows and videos. But this is where is it started (in 2014 if I'm not mistaken). This is how we all felt when we watched the Red Wedding. It took some major balls to kill off all of the people you made your audience love in one scene. The acting was impeccable though. Caitlyn's scream when she saw Rob die was a total gut punch.
@SliceOfDog Жыл бұрын
Watching this again, I feel like she died the moment Robb did. All that was left afterwards was a shell. When I think back to the Red Wedding, it's always Catlyn I think of. She died thinking her daughters were in the hands of the Lannisters and that every one of her sons was dead. And she blamed it all on herself, as she told us in that incredible scene where she recounts praying to the gods to kill (and then save) Jon, which I think is one of the most underrated scenes in the entire show.

@pacio49 Жыл бұрын
Agree to disagree based on simple storytelling structures, but yes, they are major characters with important roles to play, all of them. We just aren't here for their story. Just a simple matter of share of screen time. The show introduces us to this world through the Starks, so the Starks remain our protagonists. Doesn't mean that the story of the Starks is always the biggest thing happening at the moment. Just that that's the family we as the audience have been conditioned to root for from the start, by express intention of the Author. If this were Dany's story, we would have begun with her, and we would have followed her as the central plot, and woven the Starks in around the fringes. But we did not. Not for three seasons so far. The Stark family are the protagonist thread that the rest of the tapestry is woven around. Not spoilers, just a solid three seasons of established story structure. Sure there's ways we could shift the narrative focus in a story, but the author hasn't even come close to doing so yet. Perhaps now that Robb and Katelyn are dead from the Red Wedding we'll see that jump take place. Yes, we'll see I guess. There's several seasons left. Martin just hasn't done the narrative transfer of protagonists for us YET.

Oh man, this reaction totally brought me back to when I watched this for the first time. It was back in April 2019 when I binge-watched the first 7 seasons just ahead of Season 8 releasing. I would binge 3-4 episodes every day and I remember having to stop for the day after this episode. I shouted and cried just like you did. The only difference is that I wasn't as in-tune with the various music in the show (at the time, I think I finally caught on in S4 or S5), so I didn't recognize The Rains of Castamere. I only realized something was fishy when Catelyn lifted up Bolton's sleeve to reveal the chainmail. You've talked about the music so much in your reactions so far and recognizing the themes, so I had no doubt you would immediately pick up that it was the Lannister theme that started playing. This reaction definitely didn't disappoint and I'm sure was one that we were all looking forward to. Now that this has passed, there are a few more episodes on my list that I'm looking forward to your reactions to. 😊 Thanks for all the work you do to get these out!

I knelt there for probably 15 minutes, unable to pull my focus enough to move, cheese in my hand, tears streaming down my face. When the chapter ended, I just sat down right there to process what I'd just heard. My roommate walked in on me like that and was alarmed. She then found it funny that a book could do that to me. Thanks for the reaction! Great one! Red wedding scene is the one which gave birth to every reaction on YT. Now you are man of winter. Winter is coming - and now it came for the Starks... This show just prooves that every political mistake in this world could be a death sentence truly. "When you play Game of Thrones you win or you die, there is no middleground". If Robb didn`t execute lord Carstark and keep him as a hostage, if he married the Frey girl and not married for love... but he is too much of Ned Stark son not to do it and made this things in honorable way - Tywin knew it and overplayed Robb by it and made his deal with Walder Frey. There is also important you to know that breaking the marrige engagement puts a big stain on the reputation of the Frey house, so lord Walder did what he did. Lord Bolton on the other hand did it only for himself and after battle of the Blackwater Lannisters and Tyrells made an alliance he didn`t believe that Starks could be on the winning side. Also so sad about Arya - she almost made it. Next episode would be even cruel then this for her. You see how irony works in this show? Robb who never lost a battle in the end lost a war. A honorable Ned Stark died as a traitor by his own sword Ice. The mother of 5 kids Catelyn thought all of them are dead or lost for her forever. A great warrior Khal Drogo died from a scratch. The breaker of Targaryen dinasty King Robert got drunk and died from a boar. Renly with the biggest army and biggest chances to win also died without any use of this army. And this list is countless. This is what makes a show and the books writing definetely the great! Thanks for the reaction! If you need a break just do it, this waas really hard episode)

This is the episode that taught me one thing as a screenwriter, there will always be someone who fills the role of main character on the screen. Always. Hope you are well mate.

I love how powerful our protectiveness of the Starks is - almost every reactor I've seen says something along the lines of "That's all the Starks gone!", then goes on to recall that we 'only' have Jon, Arya, Sansa, Bran and Rickon left. We've literally lost less than half of the Starks, but each one is such a blow that it feels like the whole cast has been wiped out.

I always say, when the episode happens it feels like the show is gutting the main characters, but by the end you will see the entire story for what it is (no spoilers) and you'll understand how this episode fits not only the plot but the character development of those involved. The genius of this entire story is that the plot, the real plot, slowly reveals itself throughout rather than being laid out for you to follow. Other shows attempt to create the same shock value by killing off main characters, but it never feels the same because it is never as earned as the red wedding. Deep down you knew that Robb couldn't get away with what he did. And deep down we all knew that Robb's time was almost up, we just never wanted to admit it or believe it. You'll get through it, like we all did. Great reaction as always!

The amazing thing here is, just like poor Ned in season 1, Robb's tragic mistakes were on full display throughout this season. Marrying Talisa and bringing her with him throughout the war (and even to the home of Frey, the man he spurned), killing the Kastark Lord (thus losing his bannermen), and generally taking risks that only "main characters" can survive. Meanwhile, Tywin's been sitting and writing letters all season - letters to Bolton, letters to Frey, waging the war without ever putting himself in harm's way.

i always liked that detail - that in many scenes with tywin he's busy lowkey writing up betrayal plan emails

Very good catch that Jon not killing the horse breeder was a parallel! I've watched the show 4 times and never noticed that lmao.

I had a coworker from Jordan and he said they often still do the bedding ceremony. So they got married at a hotel and had a reception and after some period of time after they had greeted everyone there was a procession to their hotel room, but everyone (besides bride and groom) went back down and kept partying and then “after a while” the bride and groom came back down to the reception and everyone cheers for them.

FYI: Bedding ceremony was an actual thing for many centuries. The custom was different from country/nation/tribe or whatever, somewhere they just put the pair to bed and left, somewhere they actually watched

G.R.R. Martin is always reminding you - real life doesn't have main characters! One of my favourite examples (and it doesn't involve horrific death) is Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in the Second World War. Should have been a shoo-in for the subsequent election, right? He and his party lost, badly. You never can tell, with real life - and reflections of it.
