Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore, Kishore Mahbubani, discusses his latest book, The Asian 21st Century, in which he relates US decline to the rise of plutocracy and Asia’s renewed rise - after having fallen behind in the last 200 years - to its growing sense of dynamism, optimism, and diversity. This is the 200th episode of the podcast Economics and Beyond with Rob Johnson.

According to some experts, US military bases are a new form of colonisation through the introduction of power and military power on foreign territory, i.e., the American version of a colony is a military base. We know the statements made by the commander of the American soldiers at the base in Djibouti, Marine Brigadier General Martin Robson, that in order to lead a “preventive” war, a “global presence” is necessary, by which he means establishing hegemony over any country that is not yet under America’s thumb. ----The Pentagon hides the exact number of its military bases abroad. According to some sources, the number is 865.

By population count, Asia forms almost 60% of world population. Add Africa, Russia and some Latin America countries, that % increases to almost 80% or more. In democracy, number counts and not military might. Cant expect these 80% to bow to 20%. Can you?

One of the first to speak out against foreign laboratories in Kazakhstan was Amirbek Togusov, former Kazakh Deputy Defense Minister who handed over to Russia materials about the US military’s experiments with deadly viruses in the summer of 2020. “We are like test monkeys here, and our territory is the Pentagon’s natural proving ground for testing new viruses… The laboratories are taken out of national control and work in secrecy,” General Amirbek Togusov said at the time. Shortly after that, General Togusov “died suddenly and unexpectedly.”

I hope the west, particularly the 245 years old America can try to understand the whole human history or world history. Obviously, a lot of Americans only learn American history, not the world history. If they learn world history, they wouldn't have been this arrogant. Wow, so arrogant little ones. The USA is still a great power, has the Spirit of a Winner, and come back Kid! The USA helped China get their recent wealth through manufacturing and trade (along with other countries) after they were addicted to Opioid and pimped out their women. I would say 'Don't count your chickens before they hatch'! I've visited various regions in Asia and I was not impressed. Singapore is stunning but it's an island. I've visited India, it's a country of many contradictions, poverty that I have never seen in my life, an oppressive caste system to this day, dirty, extremely corruption, known as the gang-rape country of the world, and India is a 3rd world country. Americans believe in individual Rights, individual Freedoms, and individual Right to pursue our own definition of Happiness. I've seen other countries' hospital. No comment. Trump is a better president than the current president of India. He actually believes in putting America citizens first instead of bringing in all these Visa Holders from India who are cheating #FarmingtonUniversity. One number or number 2, the USA is still awesome.

With regards economic development, poverty reduction and the raising of living standards and so forth in India and China, the key difference between the two countries is that China is a one-party state which can plan and implement plans consistently long-term, whilst being a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy, the democracy can turn into dysfunctional democracy where all parties are politicking against each other and getting less done for the economy and the interests of the Indian people. Whilst, Singapore also is a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy, however it is more like China where the PAP has been solidly in power since even before Singapore's independence in 1965. And since Kishore Mahubani presumably is based in Singapore, just look north of the Causeway to see a fine example of a dysfunctional democracy, which has had three prime minister and three different governments in less than four years - I.E. plenty of democracy and freedom of speech for politicians to go at each other, trip each other up or stab each other in the back but nothing much gets done for the interests of the economy and citizens, and we have no "General Prayut" to save us. Well, Aristotle did not think much of mass democracy and moreover, western-style democracy is not inherent to Asian traditions and culture, where we went from being under feudalism when colonised, during which time we had no democracy, and were suddenly catapulted into a western-style democracy at independence, without an inherent democratic culture and traditions. This is why politics in much of Asia, is more or less a battle of feudal-style warlords behind a facade of western-style democratic institutions.. You just need to look across the Straits of Johor (Selat Tebrau) to see what I'm talking about. Your late Lee Kuan Yew probably realised the same thing about western-style parliamentary democracy within Asia too.

I am from India. My state leader(different party from the one that is leading India centrally), is like a dictator. She and her policies are to rule through fear and minority appeasement. Political opponents have been killed, hanged, put behind bars. People from the state look forward to next elections which is about 4 years from now to remove her. If you are giving me a scenario and telling me to choose faster development - letting her rule for life and a bit of slow development - chance to change, I am choosing the latter option. Democracy is not for the state. It is not for the politicians. Authoritarianism is the best case for them where they own all of the power. Democracy is good for the people, for the weakest because it gives them a voice. India might not be as big an economy as China is, but we did not mass murder our own people to get our way to success. Just read how many people Mao and his policies end up killing. Then it was the one-child policy. In India, we are working slowly and I agree that there is a lot of backstabbing and ego-politics that I hate but even now anyone can challenge the primary leader(Modi) and his party by calling a press conference and showing the world that something is not right. That freedom is something Indians will never give away for 10% GDP growth. We are happy with the 6-7% we get.

The Chinese propaganda machine is whoring itself: "We are all things to all people; what shall we call ourselves today, world? We live to tickle your ears and cut off your tongues." Give it a rest. The CCP let a global virus spread throughout the world unannounced which it failed to contain within its own borders for MONTHS so as to let it spread unannounced internationally. Then, before the world even knew its name, China built a hospital in 10 days and then shut itself down domestically only AFTER it had satisfactorily spread internationally. China is so insular, repressed, and narcissistic, it doesn't even know how bizarre it appears crowing about its talent for COVID-19 containment that it only implemented AFTER it let COVID-19 spread overseas! Everyone knows what happened here, Chinese imperialist monocultural autocrats, and how weirdly and awfully veiled the land of COVID-19 has been regarding this plague's mysterious origins. Thank goodness for the Chinese masters thesis anonymously posted to Twitter that explains ithe virus' origins in the bodies of those Chinese mine workers who were sent to the Wuhan Virology Lab for autopsy just a few years before 2019. Democratic autocracy?? What idiotic humbug. A very interesting talk. Kishore's characterisations of Biden as 'the nicest guy you'd ever meet' is not even close to an accurate description of the man I've seen in footage, etc. over the years. But that misguided (or disingenuous?) description isn't fatal to his analysis, because he also recognises that Biden's decision making power as President is effectively non-existent. Id be very interested to read his book as he makes some great points and seems to have an admirable handle on non Western political and economic dynamics and how that fits in with worldwide material realities.

I guess that is critical 'adjustment assistance' as the benefits from the adjustment comes only after a generation. That is about 10-15 years later assuming the insane profits of those who benefit from the adjustment are not piled in tax havens but spent on those who suffer from the adjustment. If this not coordinated by the government then it does not make sense to accuse China Mexico etc. after 30 years. The current Gini of USA which is about 0.56 is a shame for a developed country which means the US government has not done its job in this context for the last 30 years.

It's not globalization that took the jobs away from the US. it's because we can't make products anymore or that people want. Detroit's problem was because they couldn't make cars for 30 to 40 years. The car industries in the early 90's almost went belly up if it wasn't for some bail outs. Speaking of the 90's that's when our electronics industry went belly up because we couldn't make quality products like the Japanese were doing. But our exceptionalism thinking we can't blame our own selves if we did then that destroy that narrative of exceptionalism. If anything, automation is the biggest culprit for the lost jobs, but our "CAPTAIN" of Industries didn't want to because of greed to figure out how to re-incorporate those workers that lost their jobs to automation. It is our complacency and laziness in our corporate elites that has take this country down beside this exceptionalism that brings the zero sum game. GREED is a bad thing...not a good thing...Wallstreet. Unfortunately, the Professor's thought on Ukraine is way off.

For the last 7 years I have been traveling extensively 5 days a week in the midwest, Southwest, Southeast and Northeast of the United States and I see the Rural America is devastated. The towns and communities are financially depressed. You see the residential and commercial properties either for sale or closed with no business. United States of America needs to pay attention to its own citizens rather then policing and financing other countries in the world. United States is a great country and it can sustain its number one position in the world. I can personally share my experience traveling overseas as well that people from other countries have great respect for United States. By the way Mahbubani is not correct on the Trump. China territory was a fraction of what it is today until a few centuries ago with Qing dynasty expansion, and the Indian subcontinent was scattered states in the period 0-1947. Also population censuses and income data before 1800 are pretty much arbitrary estimates. So saying that "biggest 2 economies from 0-1800 were China and India" can not be correct. The Islamic Khalifat was probably the biggest economy in the 9th and 10th century, and the Mongolian empire (which included parts in China) was the largest in the 14th century.

The bad behaviour of the United States of America as the primary world power for the past 77 years has set a very very bad precedent for all future world power. Whoever that will inherit that position will, most unwisely, use the US of A deeds on how to deal with the rest of the world. We can only hope that it will not be so, but rather that the way the US of A behave is exactly how a world power should not and must never act or emulate.

The man's a Singaporean, not some rootless "Asian-American". No, Asia is not China. If it is, then Kishore would only be talking about China this entire video. Which he didn't, though China does take a significant portion of the talk. Mostly because of the US-China tension, and China's closeness with Russia.

Yep, no kidding. China has emerged and now all their people want western living standards. India and ASEAN are on deck and their people will also want to consume a lot more of the world's resources. Later on this century, when the Africans and South Americans also develop, they will demand the same level of resource consumption as westerners as well. If everyone consumed like westerners, then even four earths worth of resources would not be enough to fulfill all demand. Basically, at our current level of technology material equality on earth is unsustainable and impossible to achieve without causing mass extinction. But good luck trying to convince emerging nations to take one for the team and accept a permanent lower standard of living. There are only three ways forward: 1) nations will go to war to secure resources and political/social stability for their own people (the tried and true old way), or 2) a global government will have to take over that imposes austerity on everyone (impose population controls, and no one can be wealthy), 3) human technology develops to a point where we CAN create enough energy / food / building materials to give everyone a high standard of living (a pipedream at the moment). In summary, peace is not an option for our world unless a lot of people die off. My bet is we'll just fight each other until enough people die that we reach an equilibrium.
