No mention of the fact that the dualsense’s touchpad is mappable? That’s HUGE for me. You can map the left side and right side of the touchpad independently. It essentially gives you the steam deck’s touchpad functionality from the controller. It’s a game changer for me. You can use it as a mouse trackpad or rotary menu, lots of possibilities.

The Edge its the only controller (besides the Steam Controller) that offer additional remappings natively via Steam Input (you can remap grips and Fn buttons to anything, including button combinations to simulate the PS functionality per-game). Idk what you mean by the dualsense edge not getting full access to it's features in steam, but what you said was wrong. You can make use of the extra paddles and function buttons in steam. They can be mapped independently of the controller which gives it an extra 4 buttons most controllers don't have, even with paddles. Most controllers with paddles only remap to buttons on the controller, but the dse can break past that with steam.

I've been using an old ps4 dual shock. I'm sure one day it will catch the drift and I'll have to change it up, but until then it's comfortable, works well, and has the touch pad which is sometimes useful. It also has symetrical sticks, which I prefer, & much better battery life than the ps5 dual sense.

Worth mentioning since you did for the Xbox controller, the Xbox versions of the 8BitDo Ultimate controllers don't have gyro controls either, only the Switch versions do. So you're still stuck with the Nintendo layout if you care about motion controls, even for third party.

I'd like to also throw in the 8bitdo Pro 2. I have mine with the 8bitdo replacement buttons in Xbox layout, so the legends don't confuse me when playing on PC. My favorite feature with it is the 4-mode switch on the back, which also remembers which device was paired to each mode. Switch to the Switch mode and turn it on, and it connects to my switch. Change to D Input and it connects to my phone. And the X Input mode is paired to the 8bitdo wireless adapter 2, so I just plug that into either my PC or Steam Deck and it connects. It's my ultimate, all-rounder controller and I love it.

I have the Rog Ally and started using the 8bitdo Pro+ but recently connected one of my PS4 controllers and that was perfect. The Share button works for screenshots(the 8bitdo one was missing that button) and MGS Master Collection lets you choose the button type and Steam does that automatically and after changing manually in-game I have matching buttons too!

Xbox for Racing games or games with full controller support OR DualShock 4 for games that could require a touch pad/mouse cursor. A nice bonus is that there are DualShock 4 chat pads that are Bluetooth. So you can pair a keyboard and use the touch pad as input. The Xbox chat pads do not work natively on Steam OS ):

I have all of these except the Victrix, and here's my take: DualSense (Edge specifically) - Currently my go-to because it's the closest match to the Deck (only missing two back paddles and one touch pad), but it gets finicky with connecting and configuring layouts sometimes. Also some games just straight up don't like it for whatever reason. Not really a big deal, but I have yet to get the adaptive triggers to work on any supported games, wired or wireless, as well. Xbox - The most straightforward to connect and use for most games, which I like when I don't need extra features like back buttons or gyro. Unfortunately I use those features quite often so I don't use this one as much. 8Bitdo Ultimate - I originally got this because I didn't want to shell out the extra cash for an Edge just to have back buttons, but I obviously ended up doing that anyway. This isn't a bad controller by any means, but it's kind of uncomfortable to hold for me personally, and I really don't like having to use the phone app any time I want to reassign the back paddles to other functions. I've had issues with the app saving my profiles, too. With the Edge, SteamInput recognizes them as their own inputs so they can be set up right from that menu. Switch Pro controller - Never tried it with the Deck. It's one of my favorite controllers ever made, but it doesn't really offer anything that the previously-mentioned controllers don't already have. I don't have a PS5 or Xbox so those controllers are solely for the Deck, but I keep my Pro controller exclusively for the Switch. I wish Valve would just make a Steam controller v2. It would be the most seamless to connect and configure, plus it would (hopefully) be identical to the Deck layout. The only things I would ask for are a better d-pad and bigger face buttons. I'm thinking layouts could be transferred/shared between the Deck and controller as well, which would make things so much easier.
