What I got from this video is that the availability and popularity of halal meat at restaurants and supermarkets across the country is increasing at a rapid rate. What I didn't get from this video (and I was left wanting it) was a more in-depth description of exactly what halal meat is, as well as a comparison between halal meat and the meat most americans are used to buying. Also, since they featured a Jewish deli, I'm left wondering about the differences as well as the simularities between halal and kosher. I can go look these things up online, but it would of been nice to include them here. They could of done that without making the story that much longer.

One could argue that eating meat at the levels that we do is itself not Halal. Halal is part of a larger ethos of cultivation and stewardship of the Earth. Plenty of Hadiths (recorded Prophetic traditions) criticize gluttons and over-consumers of meat.

In a Halal or Kosher situation, the cow is still aware it's dying, as the blood flows from it's slit neck. Even though the cow quickly passes out before it dies, that leaves an open window when the cow is: 1. Aware of having knives to her throat; 2. Feels the knives slice her throat 3. Feels her blood being drained from her body before blacking out. So it’s probably done like that

It's a set of rules which outlines, at a minimum, the following: which animals are permissible to eat; how animals are to be raised and treated; and how animals are to be slaughtered. For example, we don't eat pork products. Additionally, animals must be raised in a clean, health, and humane environment; when an animal is slaughtered, it cannot be done in front of other animals so as not to cause them unnecessary fear and stress. Etc.

I invite Jim Axelrod or any journalist to visit a halal slaughterhouse to see the reality of halal slaughter for mass consumption. In NYC alone there are about 80 small slaughterhouses, many of which are classified as halal. Nearby in Newark, American Halal Meat is a popular source of halal meat. At all of these businesses, the animals arrive covered in their own feces after being trucked for hours or days without food or water. They are stressed, starved, dehydrated, suffering. Before even entering the premises, the principles of halal have already been violated. Inside, the animals are confined in extremely tight spaces again in their own waste, and most are killed within sight and earshot of each other. This is the reality of ALL slaughter. The most halal or merciful thing anyone can do is to forgo animal consumption. Please consider that it is inherently unmerciful to take the life of a sentient being who does not want to die.
@kimbok59712 жыл бұрын
Many animals are treated this way, right on the farm where they're raised, before ever setting foot in a livestock truck. I live in Perry county, PA, and I pass farms where the cows can be seen standing or laying, all day, in big piles of their own manure. One farm, purchased by Mennonite people a few years ago, have their small herd permanently penned up in a small, manure-filled area, in front of their barn. Not allowed to pasture at all due to using the remaining land for other purposes, such as a very large chicken business.
