The $5Billion in funding from VW pretty much guarantees they'll get the R2 into production. That's going to set them up for profitability before the R3 reaches production.

Indeed, it is very similar looking to the Lada Niva which i had in Brasil... what a terrible car, it was so unreliable; basically a fiat from the 50's... and in fact the VW golf from the 70's is not far from this car. But i love this design. It's very clean and simple, and practical. Should be a smash hit if they can reach the 40k price point (and not 49k...!)

By the time you can even get your hands on this in 2027 people will be sleeping in the Tesla while it drives them around. Rivian doesn’t have any tech like that unless they’re going to license it from Tesla, who the hell would want to buy a non-Tesla and not have a private chauffeur as an option

5:13 that seems to be a design mistake: one thing you want from a partial opening is that it is quick. Having to wait three seconds to open part of the hatch kind of defies the point.

It's a prototype, so the features arent all going to work great yet. And I think they are showing it at shows all over the country to get feedback exactly like this. From what Ive seen, Rivian seems to be pretty good about incorporating user feedback into thier process.

It should just be a separate button. Our highlander has a rear window opening that is similar and there is a button near the rear windshield wiper.

Nit picking here: Should NACS be on the driver side? Land Rover style gate seems logical, if a split gate is used.

I’m pretty sure Rivian already addressed this and said they are putting it on the driver side. Even if you go on their website and look at photos of the car, they switched the photos to the driver side for the charger port. I’m not sure, this is just a guess, but I’m guessing their show car is still going to be used for demonstration/viewing but all edits will be on the final model. Just like they have also already said they are in fact not going to have fold down front seats.

Driver's side charging means that you can't charge while parallel parked. That is a major limitation in cities.

Really surprised it has taken this long for any manufacturer to put something like this out. This Rivian presents an opportunity to VW, if they choose to accept to sidestep all the gried their EV journey has given them and lean on their partnership with Rivian. Ex: Their announcement of a EV GTI upset their entire community...however most in that community looked at this Rivian and were immediately impressed. So this car will capture some percentage of that demo that isn't sold on the Hyundai Ioniq5 and 5N. I'm really looking forward to it, and if they can release it between 35k-55k, they'll find the type car every brand needs: the swiss army knife.

because the charge port is something you use everyday, unlike a fuel port, it’s should be on the drivers side. After owing EVs for 6 years, and pluging it every day, it’s nice to have a port next to you to quickly plug cable in as you’re leaving the car. let’s not forget the issues it going to cause at older superchargers.

Love it! I broke my habit of putting a reservation fee on new EVs (temporarily) as that habit is not good for my financial health… but when that habit inevitably comes back this might be the first EV I reserve… unless they come up with an R2T that is! 😂

It’s much smaller than a model y. For example, can you imagine a third row fitting in that? Even a tiny one like on the y? With MY juniper coming out it’ll be a touch comparison, although the r3 is supposed to be cheaper. No this is going to be a (likely) competitor of whatever the cheaper Tesla models that supposed to come out next year.

Hatchbacks are making a come back everywhere for very good reasons (hello Malaise era 2.0). They are the real OG crossover, the optimum architecture: Swiss knife able to adapt to whatever you want to do, for a decent price. 5 adults, cargo, towing, off-roading capabilities, light on the highway & they are easy to park in downtown. If Rivian manages to fix its financials & reaches the point where they can produce the R3X, it will be a best seller because it looks good & they understood the assignment. 🤞

The problem with the R3 is that Rivian is going to build it in Georgia. And they haven't even started building the Georgia plant yet. Maybe deliveries start in early 2029. Sadly.

Seems good human factors for the big knobs on the steering wheel at 2:30 Theme: Not looking away from the road is a win. * Big means less likely to need to look down to find the knob. * Knob can be reached from the back or front or both, so even easier to find by touch without looking down from the road. Although I hope they are far enough inboard to prevent inadvertent device activation while spinning the wheel.

If priced aggressively, these could really move here in Canada. Higher ground clearance than a sedan but not F-350 sized, electric with great traction and torque...I love the retro-futuristic styling details too. This and the Vinfast VF3 could really give people in this nation some better electric CUV options than what else is out there right now!

Under 40K, today, inflation is still crazy. An inexpensive, efficient, reliable, practical, safe vehicle is what people want. Get that into the market first, build a good reputation. Then you can upgrade the features, style, performance, and individually, that humans will require.

Two observations: 1. I like the fact that there are tie downs in the cargo area. That’s one thing that’s missing on my Model Y. 2. Why are the putting the NACS port on the right side? Why not on the left so it’s properly oriented for the short tesla charging cables and doesn’t take up two charging spots.

I like it on the driver's side however for those that charge on streets, it's easier and safer when the port is on the passenger side. Unless of course you're on a one-way street.

IF rivian survives they have about 3-4 more quarters of cash left. Having burned over $21,000,000,000 since 2019. And that vag 5bill is not guaranteed in anyway&fully contingent on various milestones being met on time by rivian through 2026. Also my state GA is very upset at rivian backing out of the new plant here. And are now actively trying to claw back some of the hundreds of millions in incentives and money spent on site prep there. So Imo rivian will be bankrupt by this time next year or early 2026 trying to survive launching the r2&burning up more cash to re tool Illinois again for r2&3s. Which will only increase their capex&general costs, plus rj has already cut DOWN 23% of rivians total staff since July of 2023. 😀

The two problems I see with rivian is the front lights are boring an all the lime seems constrained to that design decision and 2nd prices are to high, the future has to be sustainable and high prices are the opposite of that

I agree the squinty headlights are ugly. Nice round ones like the Ford Bronco and many others have would be more inviting. It is a bizarre and inhuman fad we are in lately to have headlights that are squinty, as if we are in pain. Nice open eyes are friendlier.
