During a WWF The Main Event taping in 1990, The Rockers (Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty) wrestled The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart) in 2 out of 3 falls match for the WWF Tag Team Championships. The match was taped for the NBC broadcast of Main Event and fans were supposed to witness The Rockers become tag team champions after a hard-fought match with the Harts. During the match a ring rope completely broke and it wasn't fixed until after the 2nd fall, meaning the 2 teams had to wrestle inside a broken ring for a fair portion of the match.
The Rockers still defeated The Hart Foundation as planned and Shawn & Marty left the arena with the tag titles. However, Vince McMahon decided that the match wouldn't air on The Main Event due to how bad it was. The Rockers would hand back their tag team titles and the WWF acted like the match never happened in the first place. The Rockers vs The Hart Foundation didn't air, and The Rockers never did become tag champions. This video looks at the match and some theories that were thrown around in regards to McMahon's ultimate decision to erase the tag title victory from the record books.

I fully agree but it seems in most eras there's at least one team that got shafted by being in the same company, at the same time, as a handful of iconic teams. Yeah Too Cool weren't the greatest team ever but they were incredibly over in the middle of the ultra-hot attitude era but an era with the Outlaws, Hardy's, Edge & Christian & the Dudleys...well they were probably lucky to even get that one tag title reign for a couple of weeks.

Think about this. Had everything went right and the match went perfectly and Bret would have got his single push, earlier than intended, we would have gotten Bret vs a fit and healthy Mr Perfect at Wrestlemania 7. It would have been absolutely epic. Even though their Summerslam match was excellent.

I don't know about that. They still hadn't blown off the Big Bossman vs Heenan feud which is why we got Bossman vs Perfect at WrestleMania. It seems like that was the long term plan. Bret probably would have just got a singles win against a mid carder like Dino Bravo or The Barbarian or something like that

@@justinmartin1831 I dont agree, bret said he was told he was getting a push, so i think that means they were going to really see if the crowd got behind bret in singles(they would have for sure) and i think he would have probably got a huge push earlier than he did
@justinmartin1831
@justinmartin1831 2 жыл бұрын
@@Saintphoenix86 it's possible. But really Bossman was hot at this time and they needed a top opponent for him at WrestleMania and his feud with Heenan wasn't going to be blown off until then. He was going through all the Heenan Family members with Perfect being the boss at the end. It really wouldn't have mattered as much for Bret when he got the IC belt.because they could have slowly pushed him in the mid card until his big win at SummerSlam against Perfect. They sort of did that anyways after WrestleMania 7 as he was be programmed with The Barbarian on house shows.

They could have; -only aired the first fall and said it was a normal 1-fall championship match -had Hart Foundation drop it to the Rockers at a later date and maybe used this as part of the angle to build to a PPV match. -had the Hart Foundation drop it to the Nasty Boys just as it happened but then had the Rockers defeat the NB for the belts.

I don’t think Vince wanted them as champions. LOD had finally shown up and they were getting the belts eventually. Only reason they were going over this night was Anvils contract was up and hadn’t resigned, and the teams already had a feud going on. The Rockers did defend the belts on house shows, but when Anvil resigned Vince decided to take them back.

There was also a secondary issue that very few people knew about that Shawn Michaels has only talked about in his book at a couple of biography DVDs there were whispers among the executives of the producers and Vince about him becoming a solo wrestler and getting rid of the tag team altogether and they had been talking about it for a good long while but the decision wasn't made and if the rockers had won the belts then they would not have been able to do that when they wanted to do it so Vince had ample reason for them not winning those tag team belts

The problem with the Hart Foundation's regaining the Tag Team Titles at Summerslam'90, from a continuity perspective, is that they should NOT have won them back at all with Demolition going onto new challengers; possibly The Legion of Doom. The Hart's won the second fall...by DQ before winning the third fall by pin...exactly the same manner in which the British Bulldogs beat them on SNME in '87. But who really needs continuity, am I right?

If the match was going so well, I think it should have been done again at a later date. You got two excellent team of workers here, and its very sad, cause this could have been a classic match.

I'd love to see a FATAL 4WAY TAG TEAM war with THE ROCKERS(original) v THE NEW DAY v THE HARDY BOYZ v THE HART FOUNDATION (any variation). Who would you have in a dream tag team match and which stimulation would you pick?

I was a massive bret hitman fan and loved the hart foundation . The rockers were a great up and coming team I think they deserved a run as Champs the match was a very good one up till the rope breaking they should have got another shot here. Maybe Vince said to anvil that they could keep the belts to get anvil to come back.

Good video mate as usual! They made the right call in ditching the match but definitely should have redid the match, and even could have used it for a pay per view seeing that the crowd was game for the two teams

I was amazed to hear that the Rockers had never won the belts ,I don't remember them that well but they were big in their day and I figured they had been champions.

Redoing a match at a later date would have been just as good. You could tell by just the small bit of the bout that we got that it was shaping up to be an absolute clinic and that it would have been talked about for years. All four in their primes and quick as snakes. SURELY there could have been at least one run for The Rockers and SURELY there could have been a rematch.

The Rockers were the best team to never win the titles. I don’t see why they didn’t redo the match. It’ll always be a shame. That being said I also loved the Hart Foundation and giving them a longer reign was ok by me.

The Rockers vs Hart Foundation could have been done at a different date to give them the belts but its puzzling on why they never did. I do wonder perhaps if Shawn & Marty were not liking each other even at this time. Babyface teams usually face each other if one turns heel eventually especially back in those days. I wonder if The Rockers may have turned heel eventually getting cocky them beating the Hart Foundation maybe thats just pure speculation/fantasy booking

It's worth nothing, this was supposed to be the annual November version of Saturday Night's Main Event to be aired on Saturday, 11/24/90 but the ring rope debacle forced them to scrap the SNME version of the show, take out the Rockers-Harts match, and edit it to a 60-minute "The Main Event" on 11/23/90 instead. You can see the banners read "Saturday Night's Main Event" as opposed to "The Main Event" (as "The Main Event" had their own banners). Plus it would make no sense to throw in a random "The Main Event" in November when those only occurred in February (1988-1991) and there was an annual SNME in November every year.

Iv watched this match several times and am gutted that the rockers never officially held the belts. The referee was clueless at the point of the break and even the wrestling stared to fall apart, Marty and Brets timing was off a little but understandable because of the break of the rope. Two great teams, athletic and quick, definitely gems of the tag team decision back in the day.

Bret and Shawn talk about this match in great detail in their 2011 sit down interview with Jim Ross (seen on WWE’s Greatest Rivalries DVD). Bret said he had nothing to do with the ropes breaking but he wasn’t sure if Neidhart did it on purpose or by mistake. Bret and Shawn said the match was terrible because without the ropes they couldn’t do a lot of their spots.

When you stated @1:38 that the Main Event show on NBC was taped I was confused. Yes, this particular episode (#4) and the last original episode (#5) were taped but the first three episodes of the show were aired live on NBC on Friday nights.

This is a good example of how pro wrestling had changed for me in my life time. Less than a decade before the ropes braking mite not have killed the mach because they had not started using the ropes to do "all that flippy stuff". The guy's still know how to wrestle strong or cach style as there call now a days me it was just what they were doing on Sunday mornings. A lot of locks and stretching of limbs. "Yes!" Lots of chin locks nerve pitches and head locks and bear hugs. It was like stew hearts dungeon but in mach form. Then the giant dinosaurs, you know this as the yellow and red year's. Then you had the small guy's that could still do mat wrestling and do some flipping stuff. Macho man - Bret Heart types. By this time Lucha Lebara had started getting steam in the states and that type is the style that they're going for in this mach you just covered. Then you know the rest , its coved on Reliving the War. Dam! I have gotten so old I was watching Wrestling before the time of the dinosaurs!

In hindsight I would've done what they did with Hogan and warrior the year before. Never aired the match and had the same match at WrestleMania 7 with 2 face teams and had the rockers go over. After that Bret's year would remain the same winning the ic belt and the rockers at the end of the year would show signs of distention eventually dropping the belts to money inc. Still have the barbershop segment and have the rockers face off at WrestleMania 8. Shawn goes over.

@@lexkanyima2195 Bret's year would remain the same after that. He'd still be ic champ later. Rockers keep the belts until they implode

I always wondered why they don't do that sometimes. There would be nothing wrong about stopping the match to fix the ropes. The only thing I can think of is because of time constraints
@woobgamer5210
@woobgamer5210 Жыл бұрын
there's something that could've easily be done to fix it. Have Bret and Jim get into a fight about the ropes breaking with Bret arguing Jim did it on purpose while Jim swears he didn't, have the team split with the titles still on them, and have Shawn and Marty literally steal the titles, fight again with the Foundation being very much not in sync, and when they lose to the Rockers, Jim knocks Bret out and leaves, starting Bret's singles run and keeping the Rockers the tag champs

They should have redone the match, or used the mythical House Show title change. Basically, have both teams take a few weeks off, the Rockers come back as champs, having won the title at some non-existant house show somewhere in Mexico. It worked for the creation of the IC title, could have worked well for a title change pre-internet. But, I can understand Vince's view also, he wanted fans to see a match where the title changed hands, and it's a shame there was no rematch, with the Rockers snagging the belts.

Maybe, somehow, the broken rope could've been incorporated into an angle. President Tunney would've been involved in the angle, as well. Either way, The Rockers should've been given a run with the belts. I remember first learning about all of this in one of the "Apter Mags" and being totally surprised by all of this.
