@@birdyposting yep ! people with schizoaffective, psychotic, dissociative or personality disorders (basically all the disorders that are painted as "scary" and demonized in media bc "these people are cwazyyyyy 😱😱😱") are especially vulnerable to interpersonal, domestic and medical abuse, and are way more likely to be assaulted or abused than assault or abuse someone else

you're right in saying murderers have smth wrong with them but most people with mental illnesses are more likely to be a danger to themselves than other people. especially with stuff like bipolarity & schizophrenia.... it definitely feels like they wanted to "prove" how crazy she is by giving it a name and just randomly picking disorders that have a bad rep, which is really disappointing. but what else could you expect from a movie like this

Plus there's really no medication for psychopathy .... I feel like to prove how crazy she is they could have just mentioned that she'd been in an insane asylum for being caught by her old "friend" trying to kill... It would have been better that way ... 16:43 the way to solve that problem is to make mental health portrayal a more prominent part of movies. Even if it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. Which yeah, will feel shoehorned in at first, but that’s also just kinda how life works. Unlike movies everything isnt always connected. Everything you find out about a person doesn’t “come back later” just have a character casually mention that they’re bipolar and see them take medication in a scene and have the rest of the movie have nothing to do with it. Same goes for the other portrayals that are usually linked in these types of movie (autism, bipolar, schizophrenia, ect.) the mental health problems that make people obsessed or crazy killers are 9/10 NOT these things and are entirely different (usually a combination of unique brain chemistry and early childhood traumas). However because we don’t know exactly how a mind like this works we also need to stop giving names to whatever they have in movies. Just say that they are mentally unwell and possibly unstable, because that’s probably the best description for what they are doing. Don’t show them taking medication because usually whatever they are dealing with aren’t things that can be medicated out of them.

I just watched a video about this. It was more about it in books but he talks about the movies that are based on these books. If you wanna watch the video about its called; Sick lit and the romanticization of terminal illness by James Tullos. I wasn't into these books when I was younger but heard about them found this video interesting.

@KimonoSuki4 жыл бұрын
I've never seen the movie, but I read Everything, Everything and I quite liked it. The thing is,,,she didn't actually have a terminal illness, it was more about living vs *living* and I quite liked that theme. Like yes you can have every comfort in your home but can you really experience everything fully? Even just looking at the cover almost made me cry, just thinking about that.

I once went to a mental hospital, because of my depression, and met many people with bipolar and one girl with schizorania and I ain't seen nothing of that sort. Mentally ill people are human beings with feelings and nuance and movies like this put a stigma on them that is sometimes really not justified! So thank you for speaking and critisizing it! ♥️🦆

Yayyy! My sister and I trashed this movie so hard when we watched it. Also their massive misunderstanding and misrepresentation of mental illnesses that aren’t actually dangerous is so sad, especially because a lot of people believe it. Also I couldn’t remember the names of any of the main characters through the entire movie.

16:46 100% agree with this, In every movie where there is a crazy villain they have to automatically say that they have some form of existing mental disorder. It's actually quite damaging for people IRL who suffer from those disorders, they always are portrayed like "freaks" or villains in mainstream media. I can't think of any character in any movie that had a mental disorder and wasn't villainous or weird. People with mental disorders are probably the least people who get positive exposure in movie and unfortunately... :/

Yo! As a person with a bipolar 1 disorder diagnosis, I really appreciate you going the extra yard to point out the squickiness of using mental illness as an excuse for random murderous motivation. Like it's hard enough dealing with depression and hypomania cycles without having random people look at me like I'm Dr. Jekyll, ya know? The greatest threat posed by the mentally is to ourselves, not others.

Please do hangman’s curse, it’s a Christian horror movie. Enough said. As an edit I asked for her to watch this movie back in December of last year. Because I think the plot is great but I want her to grill the only scary movie I was allowed to watch at 13 (besides the boogeyman with Ashton Cult) and know the hell I had to go through with a badly made but well plotted horror movie. I don’t care it was Christian, I was raised southern baptist and am not one now. There’s a line at the end I endure forever to memory and I want to experience that with someone else how funny and comical this horror movie demonizing people that look different.

I found your channel late and have been watching this little series you've got going, sorry that I'm commenting on an older video! I love your content I wanted to say a little something about mental health since you took the time to talk about it here. I don't have any mental afflictions that are mentioned in this movie or in your talk, but I definitely think it's damaging to insinuate that people with these mental disorders are dangerous, though something does have to be wrong with someone in order to make them hurt another person like this. I know this is probably silly to comment here, but I genuinely think the best thing we can do for movies like this is have a little message before the movie begins. Like, a disclaimer that explicitly states "this is not a representation of XYZ" because there are so SO many people out there who take movies and use that to form their opinions on people. Like the movie Split, for example. It shaped a lot of people's views on DID. I did enjoy the movie, but I was able to disconnect reality from the movie, whereas some people did not. I remember it being a big deal within the mental health community to get the movie to stop being in theaters because of its damaging reflection. Split did take itself out of the realm of possibility because it took place in a world where people with superpowers existed, but this wasn't enough to keep people from using it as a piece of reality. Big rant on a fun video, I apologize. I just felt like it needed to be said, especially after you took that moment to talk about mental health. Love your videos, keep up the amazing work!!

I’ve had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (along with anxiety) and while its been difficult to live with it and feel like im not different in any negative way, I’m just another normal person. The media has had (for the most part) a very negative way of portraying such mental disorders and you speaking on it and how incorrect it is, is amazing. Thank you so much for that ❤️
