@sassykat25873 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty tired of that excuse cropping up as well, it's enabling. Same goes for people who abuse and whatnot. They had a past, I get it. Anyone's past can be a complete shitshow. But using the age old "well my parents did it so I will too", being stuck in their ways or those who pretend to be 'nice' on the outside shouldn't mean it's OK treating people/family badly. Break the cycle, at least TRY to. There is a serious lack of awareness among other issues in people like that, truly scary at times.

My father lost two siblings before he was 20 and it caused him to become reserved and emotionally stunted. He also used his skills as a policeman to leave us nearly without money, gaslight my mom and bring back her PTSD so he can present her as crazy and gain custody over the youngest daughter in the family. I won't say he's an irredeemable monster because there's... a lot behind his decisions that I can't explain, but I'll never forgive him for pulling that shit on my mom when he could have done it peacefully and like a logical grown up person.

@M.C.Honey Rose You are so spot on. I remember when I was being stalked and harassed by a guy in university, I was basically told to put up with it or leave by the "threat assessment team". When I spoke to my counselor, who specializes in treating women who've been abused, she said, "They know it's easier to silence the woman than to make the abuser change ". I think that logic applies here as well: "We know we can't make the racist change, but the Black woman speaking up about it is making us uncomfortable, so we'd really like her to shut up and stop trying to hold us accountable so we can get on with our lives." It amazes me how all oppression uses the same tactics, whether it be racism or sexism, domestic or systemic

And it's always that they don't like a *race,* not, "I'm not attracted to the common features of certain ethnic groups." And don't even get me started on when the way they describe the disliked features ascribes some idealistic value, like saying that dark skin is masculine. I think that people get so defensive of their 'preferences' because they won't stop and address any of the racial biases we just carry around with us.

While I do think that people shouldn't be pressured into dating minorities just to not seem racist and of course having preferences is fine, it's the whys that annoy me as a minority myself. It's like "oh why don't you like xyz race?" and they'll answer "they're all fat" or something like that. Like, they just marked us all as that one trait they probably saw once in their life. It's one thing to not want to date someone big, it's another to write off an entire race as that. Or (and this can arguably be even worse) when they say "I prefer xyz (minority) race because they really know how to clean and cook." I feel like it's worse when they pretend to like us for who we are when in reality they're again just falling into those stereotypes about us. Especially our women. Like people assuming all Russian women are whores, all Arab women are cooks (and gold diggers), all Asian women clean (and are apparently also gold diggers), etc. etc.

But, so true, I'm kind of disliking the idea of dating American men cause they say dumb stuff in my dms on ig like, "oh i never knew African girls could be cute like this" or "No way I can't believe you're African", the amount of times I heard these sentences makes me want to punch them in the face, it's not a freaking compliment, it's literally telling me you thought my people were ugly.

I ended up finally learning where that 4chan meme image of a skinhead wearing a white shirt with a swastika on it and a black girl happily laughing and smiling together comes from. c1.staticflickr.com/4/3264/2602827349_42d266f64b.jpg Apparently it's a 2005 movie with now-A-list actors where the black girl thinks she's the reincarnation of Adolf Hitler. Well, this is an obscure film. As for your situation.... it sure seems to me like your parents are harmfully trying to "help" you by preparing for the "reality" of racist stereotypes, but are instead fulfilling a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do they also give you or any young black males "the talk" and tell you that, if you drive a car as a black person anywhere in America, you are guaranteed to get pulled over for no reason at least weekly and each time have a 50% chance of getting shot by the police even if you have no guns in the car and pull out your driver's license a millisecond too fast, whereas whites can aggressively resist arrest and be let off with a warning? Because "The Talk" is child abuse. Look up Washington Post Fatal Force and see just how rare unarmed black people get fatally shot by police. It's 14 people last year, 2019, that were reported as black... another 14 people were of unknown race, so assuming they are black, that's 28 people. Much rarer than most people think considering that there's 40 million black people. At least half of the white population in America would cheer you on and think that you are a #GirlBoss or a #Queen or a #Kween if you decided to get loud and angry in public, solely because you are black. Meanwhile, any white woman having any legitimate grievance about anything is an oppressive, Nosy Nancy or a Karen who is "tattling" on poor, innocent black people just minding their own business. And I say that as someone who usually is not a fan of white women. Look up the Karlos Dillard "Karen" video which unfortunately is one of those viral videos if you want an indication of how much white women are allowed to express emotion. Usually I don't feel sorry for white women (nor white men) who get called out, but lately they've been used as scapegoats for black people to be jerks.

@@sweep8311 I don't think that there is any push to promote interracial relationships in Hollywood to 'wash away' ethnic groups, but maybe because it sounds really sus when you break it down. I am 100% disgusted that white folks are more comfortable with mixed race people than fully black or dark skinned people, because I know this to be true in my own experience, but I feel like the culprit is colourism and colonialism, rather than a scheme. I think that you should re-evaluate how you came to this mindset or who told you this, because that is an actual nazi talking point, and you deserve better than to internalise that.

BlueYellow&Green some people do say mixed race white if they’re white passing. As Donald Glover once said in a stand up special years ago, if someone saw a dude that looked just like Barack Obama break into a car they would say “somebody stop that mixed guy!” Mixed/Multiethnic could mean a variety of combinations. I just clarify for the sake of this discussion the black due to the racism in question being specifically anti-black racism. I wasn’t rejected by some extended family for being “mixed,” I was rejected for being black. Someone can be more than one thing and it not contradict another. When someone has multiple ethnicities they could look a variety of shades within their skin, variety of textures in their hair, and depending where they grow up, they’ll be treated a certain way because of it.

As a German, I already knew I'm gonna hate this movie, but the second you said they brought her in while she was screaming "Nein!" I just died. How did- Why did- When what where, I am lost for words.

my mom (white) is literally the same way!! Like every time i call her out on her obvious racism she acts like she can't be racist because she had a baby with a black man 💀 She used to make me clean and call me "little slave boy" with her friends

Color me confused🤔 How did Gabrielle read this script and think, “This is it!” How did people watch this and give it awards? How did people make sense of this? How did it get enough money to be made? This whole movie has me so disgusted and confused...

well, in only five years from now the term "decades ago" would actually apply to 2005. fml

Oh, god, referring to black people as "blacks". I was raised saying that, and remembering that makes me cringe with my whole body.

It just sounds so off. Idk how I could ever say "whites" - ~ -

@Darade Faba I was raised in south Louisiana, and before the internet was what it is now (born in 87). I'm ashamed of how long it took me to realize the phrase was dehumanizing, but I was ignorant when I was a kid.
@Kristen703644 жыл бұрын
Truth be told, I'm still ignorant about a lot of things, and I occasionally put my foot in my mouth, but I'm trying. Hopefully that counts for something.

any time someone uses the phrase "blacks" (or "gays" for that matter) it sounds so hostile ,, it sends up immediate red flags tbh

My family is Black and they call Black people Blacks and white people whites. I didn't even know that was an issue. Is this a new generation issue now or something. Are we suppose to be offended by that now?
