Case in point: The "concerned" OpenTF foundation has a public list of pledged supporters who have stated what they're going to do. A couple of companies have said they're going to put money in and even support the cost of hiring full-time devs. Notably, this list has ZERO major cloud platforms on it. Though in fairness it does have the startup who thought "eat open source project maintainer's lunch" was a reasonable business model.

That does tend to be the downside of open sourcing a project. There would have been very little issue if the license had been that way from the beginning, it's the shift that bugs people. Project gets adopted by other companies, name becomes more common place, but they can't capitalize on it because it was built using other companies names in addition to their own. Now they are trying to claw that back. It's their code and their choice, but I get why people would be upset. It's a lot like building a business based on selling on ebay and getting upset that the fees make it unprofitable. Taking the quicker route to getting your name out there tends to have a cost. It might be the right choice for you, it might not but you are far more at the whim of other people when you do that.

I don't think that major cloud providers care about terraform much, I'm pretty sure that Amazon would prefer if you used CloudFormation as it locks you in their ecosystem much harder then using the aws terraform provider... same with other major cloud providers. I think this is more about platforms that compete with terraform cloud like spacelift as those literaly just take terraform and sell it as a service.

@AWS push a lot on their CDK toolkit. It’s easier to use than cloudformation, but is binding you to AWS. Although, since each major c’oud provider have their own tool, moving from one to another isn’t that hard.

I think it makes sense to not be completely open when there is potential for Amazontto just take your hard work and make all the money off of it. I've thought clearly something has to change within open source and I think we're just starting to see the beginning of the massive changes coming to keep massive corps from just taking your work for granted. I get it, and I think its a very complex issue with no super obvious answer.
@Netz0

If it was not Amazon, it would be Google, or Apple...open source is open, or it's not open source at all. If you start to put this sort of restrictions in place, tomorrow you will have more of them slipping in, and that is just proprietary software. Some people are soft on BSL because they are only designed against companies like Amazon and since it does not affect them they are fine, but this is precisely how it starts. It is a commercial restriction in place. If it was not Amazon, they would just create another restriction because the goal is the same, they want to be the only ones making money from the software, which is absolutely and 100% fine, but then just don't call it open source and use a regular commercial license with all the restrictions you want. Open source does not care about how the code is being used. They want it both ways, they want the marketing and benefits of open source while being commercial. This is why they call it the bullshit license.
@TBasianeyes

"take your hard work"... right... In the case of Terraform, Hashicorp was only doing the bare minimum for years, they were more of a steering commitee and you can see that by looking at the commit history of the repo. The majority of the work was done by the community and Terraform core isn't even the most important part, it's all the modules which make it useful and those were mostly contributed by the community. Hashicorp wasn't even the first to come up with Terraform Cloud and their product today still is vastly inferior to products which other companies built on top of Terraform because there was a need for it.

It's so funny to me that the open-source movement is now struggeling with the exact thing that Richard Stallman opposed them for. Edit: an also nice to see that for big projects at least the community recovers.

Stallman (along with the FSF) has a way of making himself come across as dislikeable and borderline extremist (the list of linux distros the FSF recommends springs to mind), but in the end he's usually right. I do wish they'd get over the whole Linux naming thing though.

Facebook's llm isn't open source, the own OSI told about that, to be open source you must not discriminate to any use of your software, and having different rules for different groups violates this principle, so they are not open source but rather source available

@@lauraprates8764 I think that discriminating against large corporations and demanding them to pay up doesn't make something not open source. It's just basic survival measures in a capitalist system. And it isn't like they were robbed by the big companies, if it wasn't by their product initially being foss no one would even heard about them, they wouldn't have a good, stable and widespread software without it being initially foss, that's the tradeoff, they make profit on top of the others' work and those others can make profit on top of their works. Saying it again, if you don't like this model just don't enter it, but don't expect of ppl supporting you after you take their freedom while they made your software being relevant

Lol, with luck they'll just form a consortium centering around a new open-source fork of it and keep that going forward as the mainstream version. Once enough people are on board, free software finds a way. There's a reason Linux is still around when you'd be hard-pressed to find a direct descendant of the original Unix systems.

But that's why terraform cloud exists. Terraform cloud being an ecosystem and enhancement of the tool you can install on anything. That is a good strategy... @@Dethred1 by removing leaches? Hm I sure hope you’re not part of the business enterprise that is TipTap are you.. you sound like one. Must check into that… In the meantime, as to your condescending, and generally inaccurate comment - everything in life is not boolean logic. And while I don’t presume to speak for Jeff, from my personal experience, you don’t have to step on the backs of developer patrons (aka leaches) in order to be profitable. Additionally, as for leaches, I know you were trying really hard to prove a point by conjuring up the most degrading terminology your brain could think up but you you fell short on that account too. Leaches are a symbiotic creature, and while they do drink blood of a host, they also provide many benefits. Probably why they have been used in medicine for all of recorded history and still are used today around the world. So to recap your comment is myopic, factually inaccurate, and generally adds nothing of value to the conversation because of this. With the noteable exception of clearly proving you’re about as thoughtful, intelligent, and well educated as the Koala Bears that run Tiptap. (*see what I did there, I used an animal like you did but in my case it makes sense, feel free to google to try and understand why…) Anyway, take a couple breaths and try your insult again. But really think it through this time - I believe that you could do better… or maybe I’m wrong, what do I know, I invested in TipTap 😑
