I'm someone who has struggled with very low self esteem and suicidality throughout my preteens, teens, and early 20s. I could be outgoing, but I was very insecure and would go back and forth between those extremes. It's gonna sound boring, but the answer for me was therapy, medication, and building habits slowly but steadily. It's only by doing good or productive things more consistently that you learn to convince yourself that you're fine the way you are and there's no reason to hate yourself or second guess yourself so badly. You start to take more chances, and then get desensitized to little failures and start to realize there is more to gain than to lose by trying things. Nothing works for everybody, but the change comes in every little step. I hope this helps someone, because it was hearing it that helped me start to let go of my worst cognitions.

I have tried over and over, and the constant fear and pain of trying to go against my nature for months at a time always wears me back down to where I started. I find Destiny's position on knowing a person by living together interesting. It seems like living together is a very stressful thing for many couples because you get to see how they really are I guess. Many people tend to put on their best faces and as Destiny says you get shielded from what they are like on bad days, bad moods, etc. My opinion is that moving in together tends to be an issue because most people never really get to know each other very well to begin with. Most people just date people they like to have fun with. Guess what though, just because someone is fun does not mean: they are compatible with you romantically hold the same values as you hold the same morals as you have the same preferences on a number of things Those are things that can make or break a relationship imo. For example, if you are a very tidy person chances are you want to be with someone who can respect that and not be a complete slob. Otherwise you'll probably fight if you live together about things like chores or cleaning. In my case, my fiance and I are compatible in this aspect because he helps with a few chores(taking out the trash and helping with laundry from time to time), but we have an understanding about who does what. I would like to be a homemaker and eventually stay at home mom, so early on before we moved in together I made this VERY CLEAR. I'm not going to move in with someone and then ask if they can accommodate me.
@SkeleTonHammer3 жыл бұрын
Most people don't date anymore, period, because by and large it's almost impossible to get a woman to actually leave the house and go on a date. Chatting over the dating site has now completely replaced actually meeting in person and it's infuriating as someone who just wants to go on a date. So this problem of not seeing how someone really is, it's only getting worse, because you can't even PHYSICALLY MEET anymore.

I struggled with my self esteem for years, and I had a lot of severe depression (residual from past trauma and being bullied a lot). For me, the way to building up my self esteem was through accomplishments. I set out goals, some of them subconsciously, and as I achieved them I started to realize I COULD do the things I wanted to. It's a series of stepping stones, and each success builds out the pathway to the next one

This so true, and what I did to go over this hump (I'm a gamer who loves the outdoors...allergies are a pain) is I got my partner into gamming. This was about 3 years into our relationship and in some ways she's become a bigger gamer than me, but the beauty was she understood it's just a hobby and we play games together. Couldn't ask for anything bette as it brought us closer together. For me a partner or significant other should be like a confidant or PIC. 38:26 when destiny talks about the self esteem, specifically the slow churn and burn, I think what people are finding now is that a break from schooling or a gap year or two can speed up the process because of how detached you can become from society. If you are able to detach from society enough the process is sped up a lot because you don't have the external forces pushing expectations on you that are harmful for your self image.

The new guy I am with (I am more well rounded, and more of just myself now) loves that I am smart and loves the fact that I know some things more than him and of course he is better at some things I'm not. I personally think humans in general are just appalled from yes-man person unless you are an evil person that loves power play and dominate a person. This goes for both genders, we aren't that different actually and its hard for people to fathom this. Of course physically men are generally stronger than us. But we're talking about the "yes-man" thing.

Before I went on mood stabilizers I used to be that person that would get upset if someone was online and didn't message me. If I ever felt like 2nd priority it would upset me so much. Obviously I hated that about myself, but it just wreaked havoc on my life. I think that that in particular stems (at least for me) entirely from insecurity. I was horribly insecure. Anyway I'm on anti-depressants and mood stabilizers now which, holy fucking shit, have changed my life. My jealousy feels toned down from 100% to 1%. My psychologist said that the way we are in relationships has a strong connection with our relationship with our parents in childhood (I think this is referred to as "attachment styles"). And it seems that because things were a bit complicated while I was growing up that my parents didn't really have much time for us kids (I love them dearly but life is complicated and these things happen), and it seems like maybe because of that I developed an insecure attachment style which caused me endless fucking issues throughout all my relationships until today. I was overly possessive and controlling because I was so worried that if my partner spent any amount of time with someone else they may leave me for them. Anyway, if there's anyone out there in the same boat I was in, (if you're possessive and controlling), I think you probably need to see a therapist, because there's a lot you've gotta work through. I think your brain gets wired badly from childhood and causes you to get triggered when you shouldn't. Oh yeah one final side note, I felt like everything in my life was going so well, I had really solid friendships, I was doing well at university, had good relationship with family and I was exercising regularly. I literally couldn't have been happier. But then at 25 after being single for about 7 years, I got into a relationship and it felt like all my hard work over those 7 years was for nothing. Because I couldn't keep a basic relationship going. And it derailed the fuck out of my life. I ended up in a mental hospital but I'm much better now (finally). Also I used to hold suicide as my own personal safety net, that if things went wrong, at least I had some out. I kept it to myself because it was my own secret that kept me safe in life. Don't do that. For the love of god, if medication works for you like it did for me, you will never look back.

Ayyyy attachment style squad! It’s insane they don’t teach about it in high school. 50% of people have some type of insecure attachment. I have anxious/preoccupied attachment and my experience is similar to yours. Therapy helps somewhat but I think there’s a chemical imbalance for me as well. Hate being “wired” to be clingy.

Destiny's point about everyone wishes they had played less games and tried harder in school definitely doesn't apply to me. I wish I could have played more games and just not studied, would have been great. Idk who would wish they did less fun things and more boring things.

58:00 Very true about the constant "text requirement"- i noticed when i get especially close with a girl, we'll end up making it a habit to text every single day, facetime every single day- and it makes the slightest time away feel like an eternity- and it causes turmoil for both parties involved. We need to revert back, and be used to time apart- but the internet makes it so easy to demand constant attention unfortunately. A huge problem today

To be honest I stopped having low confidence after I was 30. I don't really do any "coping mechanism" so I don't know what really happened there. Thats around when I started being recognized at work so I guess that had a big part. I just stopped being afraid of failure because I realized I'm just another dude and everyone fails - especially when they're new to something. I also was too hand held for everything in my life when I was young. Ultimately most shit you do poorly on because you're new, is trivial and doesn't really matter in the long term. You looked like an idiot because you asked how something basic works at a counter? Who cares, the attendant prolly will never interact with you outside of that anyway. And if it does matter, well, just gotta deal with it, but first things first. Some girl might not be interested in you? Fuck it. You're losing nothing either way. And if that troubles you, you need to figure why you can't just be with yourself before you can be with someone else. It's of note I never had low self esteem though (if anything I always had very high self esteem, because I ultimately new I was a good person), just low self confidence.
@Arouxayis3 жыл бұрын
i've never heard anyone that was a college graduate say that they wished they tried harder in school. usually they say school is a waste of time because it won't set you up with a job because all the entry jobs require some form of experience(which is pretty stupid). companies could get away with underpaying people that don't have any metric for what their work is worth.
@xXWorldgamefunXx3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you are studying and which industry sector you want to get into. For example in Germany there is such a lack of computer science students that businesses take pretty much anyone with experience and A degree. You could study german philology and still be accepted if you can program in python and do a bit of statistics in R. In this case: fuck university, just get a good grade and focus on learning every important skill along the way.
