The Science Behind The Charging Blanket

I have not had the opportunity yet to try a charging blanket with Measure Quick yet, but will check it out. I've had the Fieldpiece charging jacket since they first started selling it. One thing I've found is that when there are very low load conditions on the evaporator of a TXV system, the subcooling will be higher than normal due to the TXV closing down to prevent the evaporator from flooding. Basically, the jacket works great, but you still need some load on the evaporator. It sure comes in handy during the times of the year where it is getting into the upper 70s to lower 80sº range in the afternoons, but is in the 50s during the first couple of calls in the morning, and beats the heck out of the abominable practice of blocking off the condenser coil.

Awesome, Jim, MQ is one hell of a tool, and it's only getting better. Back in the 80s, we used cardboard over the condenser coil, but back in my early days it wasn't explained like you did.

Nice explanation Jim. Just used my charging blanket on a unit I had to repair. 14 seer split system TXV. Dialed it right in; was about 50 degrees here in Denver. Works great. You have to find the sweet spot on the blanket/jacket to get the pressure right where you want it to and stable. Takes a little finessing but not bad at all

Using the app will make it a lot easier. It takes out the trial and error as the targets are calculated in realtime.
