Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. Oh girl...your story is my story. Almost exactly, including timing. My two "extra" bred Jerseys off of Milk Cow Market get here on the 18th! I got my first two around the same time as you a year ago. We have heifer babies born on almost the same day. There is chicken math, and there is cowculus. I partake in both. 😆

I'm 74 y/o and will NEVER have a homestead and all that goes with it. What I love to hear is the problem solving that both Jess & Miah share. I like cows...Hope has a gorgeous face. Do I care about fly spray, milk production, kick bars, NO! not in the least. I like watching two incredibly kind people show others how it is done with kindness and caring. I love your respect for your animals; if it was missing, I would be too! thanks again for sharing!

Jess... I made it to the end & then you made me feel so guilty!!! In all honesty, I made it because I turned you on my headphones & started cooking dinner. I'm a disabled elderly widow who lives vicariously through the lens into your world. I listen intently to every word you share & dream of being able to follow through with the same success you always manage to bring to fruition!!! I grew up on a farm & allowed society to convince me that I deserved better. In retrospect, I had it all & just didn't understand & I chose to throw it away!!! Not that it matters...IMHO you are making the correct & logical decision!!!

You’re farm is evolving into the farm I grew up on. We had cows and cows came and went for various reasons. Having a KZbin channel that exposes farm life to all walks of life has pros and cons. Farms are rarely “forever homes” for livestock. Of course there are exceptions, but those are just that…exceptions. It’s unfortunate that so many people are so far removed from how farms work that distorted views form regularly. I have a few roosters that we are letting them “retire and live out their lives” but for the most part, if an animal isn’t pulling their own weight, not producing or just not a good fit for your operation, then passing them on or harvesting them IS the most humane thing to do. I think people have developed a warped sense of what it takes to care for animals from short “rescue” videos, like the ones featured on the Dodo. I love those stories, however I know what it takes to care for animals and how temperament is so important. You don’t see all the struggles and expenses that are incurred in these “feel good” stories and that creates a false sense of what it takes. I would try the girls with Bo and see what happens! The heat is wrecking a lot of plans this summer. Can’t wait to meet the new girls!

And today's story time is - All About Cows! Thank You Jess! I did make it all the way through. It wasn't hard! I don't live on a farm. I probably never will live on a farm. I don't aspire to have milk cows, although, I would very much like the butter! However, what I do like to do is listen and watch you and your entire family over there on that farm filled with deep green colored grass, and covered with skies of the most gorgeous blue! It's all so picture perfect! (Yall are FOR SURE "Grass Rich" now!!) Not to mention that gorgeous show of elephant ears in the background at the end!! Today may have been a lot of information for you to "get out". But for me- It was story time with Jess. ❤️ I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I understand that keeping livestock means sometimes selling them. When I kept a few beef cows, I considered it a stewardship, and a sacred obligation to keep them in the best way I could, clean, comfortable, and with a healthy environment. Hearing you say basically the same resonated with me, just as briefly skimming over sales barns evoked some sad memories of the conditions other livestock endures. I believe that you are holding yourself to the highest standard of care for your animals, far higher than many small farmers do.

Cows are not "my" thing but I love all your videos and you explain things so well so yes I watched every second! No matter what anyone else thinks it is your farm and if you want more that's awesome. You respect your animals and take good care of them and that is a great life lesson for us all. I love that you educate us.... the milk, cheese & cream will not magically show up in the fridge because we get a dairy cow. It's a commitment that will need to be done every day by someone. People need to see the whole picture and I love that you show that. I know that i do not need a cow 😄 but I do need a bigger garden! 😍

Too often people don’t understand the never-ending cycle of living things. If we can give all the living things the best place to live, grow, and flourish then they should be with us. If someone can do it better, then that’s the place. I’ve never had cows but I’ve enjoyed your journey with them.

You have all demonstrated your commitment to land stewardship and animal welfare - but you have also been clear about your purpose which is to create an ecosystem that supports your family’s well-being and, in time, a learning environment to help others on a similar journey. Farming isn’t something that can be done from the comfort of an armchair! And I say this as someone who grew up farming and now lives in one of the biggest cities in the world (but harks back to my roots).

The beauty of youtube is you can rewatch a video that has a lot of good, useful info. A good life lesson- sometimes day to day can be overwhelming. We had a house fire 4 months ago and I found the best way for me to deal with the overwhelm is to break it down into small, manageable bites. Food for thought......A small part of your value, Jess, is your willingness to share the journey of debating over a decision that needs to be made....homesteader or not.

Looking forward to meeting your new girls. I think your plans for putting Honey and Helen on with Bo makes the most sense. In your last vlog Honeys tail dipped into the full milk pail. It reminded me of a trick we used when I was a child and milked or family cows. We had a loop of twine connected to the ceiling behind the stanchion and we would tie the cow's tail up with the twine to avoid just such an occurrence. Miah is so handy he could probably figure out something similar to avoid milk contamination. Thanks so much for continuing to take us along on your journey.

Coghill Farm has used the tiny wasp that eat fly larva and it seemed to work out good. He also uses a natural fly spray on his cow that works great for 3 days. Love your farm. Love your family. 👋😃🙏🏼❤️🌹

We just like hearing you Jess, we don’t mind ! Honestly it all makes sense to me how you decided . I think it’s hard for people to understand, these are not pets, they are farm animals. It’s not the same

Oh Jess I’m so excited for you. More cows! I’m now stalking your KZbin waiting to see them. It’s my dream to have more land. And more cows. God is so good. I love it!

I think you all are doing a great job. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, ups and downs. If you put your bull in the pen with Hope and Helen for the breeding, you would probably have a more controlled environment without putting two new cows into an established herd. Just a thought. Thank you again for all you do. Blessings on you and your family.

This all obviously touches your heart deeply. I know you will do the best for all just like you did the goats. ❤

I was raised with Jersey cow named Daisy. My mom used all her milk for drinking, butter, and cheese. Love your dedication to the breed.

Jess, Thank you for allowing us in. It was very easy to watch to the end. I have learned so very much from you especially about gardening. I will never have a farm but I really enjoy watching you with your animals. The love and care they get is top notch. I do know that farm animals are bought and sold all the time. Its about what works for your farm and the animal. Its part of the business. Please don't let a a few comments spoil your day, besides the people making these remarks probably have no idea what goes into a farm. And I would put the cows with the bull. Let nature take its course. Nothing to lose. You might get lucky Thank you for the great videos

Hi Jess, You could try a diy hack I saw on YT years ago. A guy had a huge property and swore by it. You put a few pennies in a bag with water and tie it and hang it near the doorways where the sun hits it . The reflection from the sun causes it to look like a lot of eyes which deters the flies. It’s a cheap trick that might work for you. God bless you and your family and hope those flies leave your beautiful cows alone.

So what I learned from this video is there is such a thing called "cow math". I love it! I want a cow or two but we live in the desert and don't have pastures and with the cost of feed right now it's not in our immediate plan.

Hi Jess 😊 If you feel the situation and timing is right , then do what you need to do . It's all just a part of having livestock , by realizing when the situation is right for you and them . Good luck 😊💜💜💜

Always up for a Jess cow story! Cannot wait to meet the new girls either. Can I make a request that we visit all of the animals someday soon? Including ducks, turkeys, cows pups and any animals I may have missed!

That fly trap is hung way to high, 2 feet off the ground. Your devotional lifted my spirit and gave me some hope. I would love to have an ice cold glass of that milk. How about an update on the homestead store, I plan to visit when you open. Bless you and family Jess.
