Imagine you’re in your 20s then suddenly your really short, young teenage self appears in front you telling you you’re an idiot and he is more capable. That’s basically what the Third Doctor is feeling.

And, if you go a step further with this way of thinking when the First Doctor turns up on Three's monitor to lecture the both of them, that's the Doctor's child-like self telling them both to stop fighting - probably why the Doctor, in general, is so kind to children because he understands their naive wisdom in a way

The thing that I absolutely love is that- despite being on good terms- Pewtree and Troughton would keep up this act whenever they were together in public, just for the fun of it.
@samueldixon9028
@samueldixon9028 2 жыл бұрын
There was some tension between them in real life. Troughton had a pretty loose, improvisational approach - in every take he would do his lines slightly differently, ad-lib, just generally try out a lot of stuff and see what worked. Pertwee was incredibly precise - he liked to know exactly what he was going to say, but also what everyone else was going to say. When they did these multi-Doctor stories, any scenes that they had together they would drive each other nuts because their working styles clashed so much.

This is what I love about the concept of the Doctor regens meeting each other. How there always is antagonism and denial that each regen is even the same guy, leaving each of the companions, particularly the ones who carry over with each regen, meeting each other and being thoroughly confused. But by the end each regen works and plays off one another perfectly well and makes for a good time.

The thing I still fail to understand is if they are technically the same person how can one like the new TARDIS and the other not. I understand having different taste in food (different taste buds) and even different clothing choices (they look better in that outfit since they're in a new body) but I can find no reasonable explanation for how one like the TARDIS and the other doesn't.

They are the same person but not really. They seem to have some collective memories that they all have but generally they seem to forget their past self and become completely new person - new behaviour, new "fashion" sense, new favourite phrases etc. And usually after each regeneration they do know only their name and basic knowledge of time travel and very recent past.

Apparently, some of that tension is very real. Troughton was the kind of actor who loved and thrived off improvisation. He joked around a lot while working. Conversely, Pertwee took things very seriously. Acting was his job and he was focused on getting things done and doing them right (ie according to the script). Both are valid approaches but that caused some frustration for Pertwee and I suspect Troughton just loved every minute of it.

The same could be said about Hartnell for he was the first. Also Jon and Tom stayed 5 and 7 years, totalling 12 years. Jon Pertwee was the doyen of the Doctors for me, untouchable. But Troughton is the first one I can remember watching as a child and this clip reminds us of his brilliance. He somewhat stole the show whenever his Doctor returned, yet he was popular with the other Doctor Who actors. Tom Baker, an admirer, watched this adventure when getting to grips with taking over the role as the fourth version. He pinched the idea of jelly babies from Troughton, who used them in The Three Doctors (but not this clip). Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, admitted that Patrick's mercurial version was his favourite. Though he breathes his own style into the part, Doctor no. 7, Sylvester McCoy, is very much a tribute to Troughton's impish second Doctor and that echo resurfaces again with Matt Smith's popular eleventh incarnation - floppy hair, bow tie and all. So the influence of Patrick Troughton's second Doctor has been immense and he had the daunting task of taking over and completely re-inventing a TV lead role from a much loved predecessor, for the first time. The success of the regeneration concept rested on Patrick's shoulders and he pulled it off magnificently.

There would be no Doctor Who beyond the fourth season if it weren't for Patrick Troughton. Deciding upon a radically different actor in both appearance and temperment was an enormous risk and it's doubtful anyone else could have pulled it off, even if they had happened upon Jon Pertwee at that time.
@Retrorevelations
@Retrorevelations 2 жыл бұрын
In my youth Tom Baker was my favorite, because I saw a lot of his stories, and he was the favorite of the friend who introduced me to the show. But when I got into my 20s, and started renting Who DVDs via Netflix, and actually started seeing more of the show for myself, including all of the 3rd Doctor, he quickly and easily became my ACTUAL favorite. I love Tom, he has some great stories, but to me Pertwee's era was near-perfection. It was the strongest and most consisted era of the show, thanks to Terence Dicks and Barry Letts, and IMO even the weakest stories of his tenure are still rather good. No stinkers in the lot. And his best are some of the very best the show has ever had. It was a similar deal when I got to start watching more 2nd Doctor stories, thanks (sadly) to the animation of missing episodes. He has easily become my #2 Doctor, as while he has some strong stories as well, I just really love his persona of the Doctor. Tom would be my #3, and grumpy, wonderful old Hartnell would be my #4. But you're right, without Troughton's brilliant performance, Doctor Who would have died on the vine, meaning no Pertwee, no Baker. Just as without Pertwee's brilliance, the show wouldn't have soared to the greater heights it achieved in the 70s, he helped grow the much bigger audience that Tom inherited and enjoyed. Both highly integral actors to the show's history and success.

His "We just want to avoid a long, tiring walk, that's all", line from episode four is basically why he's my spirit animal. Capaldi is my favourite, but Troughton a very close second, up to now.

Pertwee’s gravitas and severity are what make him my favorite doctor. He adds so much intensity to the program. His stoic, brutal reactions to Troughton’s antics are just so fun to watch. It’s why I also love Capaldi. I just adore when the Doctor is surly and bitter.

He was a serious, stern "take command" Doctor. But he could also be childish, and goofy at times. His comedy was more subtle. Which is funny, because Troughton came from a more serious acting background, playing a goofball Doctor, and Pertwee came from more of a comedy background, playing a serious Doctor. lol

The original multi-Doctor scene and still arguably the best. I just love everyone's reactions from Three being rather unhappy at seeing his past self, Two being deliberately annoying, Jo understandably getting very confused and frustrated at the lack of a clear and simple explanation and good old Sgt. Benton helping to clear things up. Pertwee was actually my favourite Doctor before Capaldi came along (and even then it's hard to decide which is top), which makes sense given there are a lot of similarities between their Doctors.. I know he and his era is very divisive, especially regarding Three's rude and blunt attitude towards various people but his lack of tolerance and patience with the bureaucratic mindset he often had to deal with is actually one of the reasons I like him so much. Troughton is in my top 5 as well, which is saying a lot as I'm one of those who thinks all the actors have been very good in their own way. R.I.P. to both these amazing Doctors.

i first started watching DOCTOR WHO in 1969, "The Abominable Snowmen", and Troughton was the Doctor. I was 8 years old, and just enthralled. It was amazing watching the series through to "The War Games", and its incredible ending where Troughton is exiled and reappears as Pertwee. Long before dvds, etc, it was just so brilliant a few years later to watch this story for the first time on tv, and see the Second Doctor's face again. i remember being a bit sad at the end when the story concluded, and Troughton said goodbye. He was my "favourite". i think the one you first watch tends to be that....

You know it just occurred to me. The Doctor could be his OWN companion. Now that would make an interesting season. Let's say one doctor was trapped for a season, out of sync from his own time frame, and you end up with two Doctors going on adventures together, trying to make the TARDIS whole again, as this has caused her to split into two entities. One flying off into the fabric of space and time while the doctors search for her in a more erratic incomplete TARDIS and less able to control than ever. But the big question is, who would be the companion and who would be the Doctor? Thus, the title, Doctor Who. I don't know how that would work, but it would be interesting and weird. At times, one could rescue the other from peril. Other story lines would include the dilemma of having two doctors in the same time line and the effects it would have on the time stream.

TurtleCanKZbin ' She seems to have a mind of her own. Still, some how the Doctor has a certain connection to the TARDIS. A kind of oneness, if you will. And let's say our dear TARDIS was to split into two, still being the same TARDIS, and one segment of it flies off into the fabric of time and space and the two Doctors remain in one state of time together, searching for it in an even more unstable TARDIS possibly needing one another to think clearly as Rassilon's First Law of Time has been broken. But as you pointed out, without the connection of the Doctor, Who indeed is running the run away TARDIS???? The Master??? Or the Dark Guardian??? THIS COULD BE THE BRINK OF NON EXISTENCE!!!! @@kennyt4849 I have never once heard either actor state that they didn't like each other. Tom said he respected Jon immensely. I think that Jon was just ready to move on from the Doctor, and distanced himself from it for many years. Which sadly was also the case, for different reasons, for Tom. Tom was worn out from being the Doctor too long, yet also bitter because unlike Troughton and Pertwee, who both chose their time to leave (I honestly think BBC would have been fine, originally, with Pertwee playing the role throughout the 70s if he had wanted, as he was super professional and very popular), Tom was basically pushed out. And it was sadly because Tom was bitter and at the time didn't want anything to do with Who, that he robbed us of getting to see 4 interact with 2 and 3 (or surrogate 1 or 5, for that matter). He at least admitted many years later, that he should have done Five Doctors, if nothing else for the fans.

Troughton just knocks it out of the park in two minutes doesn't he? If only current Doctor Who could be as good as this.

2:34 Troughton is right. Without the second Doctor the third one would have never defeated Omega. In the end it was the typical Troughton act of pretending to be dumber than the Doctor actually is and infuriating the enemy that won the day not the Pertwee bit of building a gadget.

One of the seminal moments in British television history. OK, so the plot may not have been the greatest Dr Who story but who cares? The banter between the three is timeless!

I dunno, the plot was pretty damn strong too. One of the best Who plots, I think. I mean THE Time Lord who gave them the power of time travel, being trapped in a black hole/negative universe he accidentally created? That's pretty epic stuff, to me. It gave us our first real look at the Time Lords outside of the brief bit at the end of War Games, it was the first story to actually fill us in on some real Time Lord lore, and it gave us an excuse to see Troughton (and Hartnell) again. The only way it could have been stronger, IMO, is if Hartnell had been well enough to truly act and interact with the others, instead of just reading some lines.

To this day, this is still the best multi-Doctor show. "The Five Doctors" and "The Two Doctors" were certainly fun, but this one sets the standard. "I may call you Jo, mayn't I?" is just one of my favorite line deliveries in the whole series. :-) Troughton's Doctor is just so flippin adorable, and Pertwee will forever be the real Doctor for me!

These are my two favorite Doctors, and I love it when they get a chance to interact with eachother. No other combination of Doctors is quite as fun to watch.

The odd thing about the early cross over episodes is that the earlier Doctor was always portrayed as being the superior. Not only does the Second Doctor here appear to be more wise than the Third, but they both defer to the First when he later shows up. This also held true for "The Five Doctors" where the Fifth Doctor, who was the oldest and most experienced of the bunch, was treated as the youngest and least experienced. Also in "The Two Doctors" when the Sixth meets the Second. It wasn't until Steven Moffat wrote "Timecrash", the mini-episode where the Tenth meets the Fifth, and the 50th anniversary special, where the Eleventh meets the Tenth and the War Doctor, that the oldest Doctor is treated as the one who has the most knowledge and experience.
