The Pals dive deep into 5G, Dan DiDio's controversial plan for the future of DC Comics, that would have seen dramatic changes to the landscape of DC and sideline the Trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman to replace them with younger counterparts. None of this came to pass, but thanks to Bleeding Cool we have many details on DC's plans for 5G, and how some of the seeds meant to lead into 5G still occurred in the books.

I find 5G incredibly fascinating. I was very casually paying to comic book news and thought some of the ideas were interesting. Then after not hearing much else I assumed it was because I was so casual

I too find it so fascinating. There's a part of me even still that wishes we could see what would have happened in an Elseworlds or something like that.

I contend that 5G may have worked if it was done in a fashion similar to Injustice. Digital first, and all the characters in one story initially and then branch out. But, on the downside, the name creators pretty much bailed on this, so it might have been terrible.

Trademarks and Copyrights or whatever would have always caused all of these changes to spiral back to Bruce, Clark, Diana, etc, no matter what. These characters are far less actual characters in a story than they are corporate-owned IP. All we can hope for is an interesting ride now and then until the status quo comes back....again :)

You're absolutely right about that. Given that fact, would you have wanted to see 5G play out?

@@TheComicsPals Not as planned, and not as they’ve handled it since, no. As written, it feels like Age of Apocalypse without an interesting reason for existing: Alfred’s death is just not the same as big A taking over the world. And to expect us to just accept brand new characters as the new Trinity etc is just daft. I would have been interested in this setup as another alternate Earth in the multiverse: where Jon had grown to this age naturally, while still being a kid on the main DC Earth, etc. What they did with all of it now just feels like your typical “DC bungled and semi rolled back another reboot” mess :)

The Batman change that was planned is a little off for me that he accepts the Joker's deal. I think it would have been even better if he saw them fighting and worked behind the scenes to help them destroy each other. Depending on the collateral damage you could have people asking 'what have you become' and then he decides to retire. I dont like the idea that Joker and Batman are working out a deal directly. Sounds pretty bold nonetheless.

Yeah, I have a tough time with the idea that Batman would be involved in any kind of killing. I can appreciate Dan's boldness but some of this stuff was a little too far.

I was actually kinda excited for 5G/Future State because I really wanted something new and different with DC comics but the execution and planning really messed things up for it. I loved all the art and designs for the new characters

Yeah, the radical nature of it definitely makes it exciting for some (I think I include myself in that group) but in general I have a hard time trusting such a sweeping change coming to the entire line for years to come being dictated to the creators by the head editor. It seems like that caused a lot of the internal strife that led to Dan ultimately being axed.

Didn’t buy it in the 66 series, and didn’t buy the 5G version of Batman killing because of the joker. because we saw joker face bane (and the punisher)before and joker knew he was doomed against someone with the training, the experience, the arsenal, and the willingness to kill. Joker isn’t an avatar of chaos he’s a bully with delusions of grandeur.

Yeah the concept of Batman killing just doesn't work for me. The concept of him teaming up with the Joker or making some kind of deal with him works for me even less.

@@TheComicsPals it’s Batman killing with his history. I can be fine with a year 1-Robin killing and learning the horror of it. Anything after is a lot more difficult to believe with the closest being the dark knight returns or the dream sequence in injustice year three. Joker goes over edge beyond the moral event horizon Batman snaps his neck either paralyzing the joker from the neck down or Batman turning himself in for murder. Quick, simple, realistic, no fanfare.

This honestly would have driven me out from DC - and that’s pretty much the only line wise publisher I am still reading outside maybe 4-5 other books. I dropped Marvel over the Soiderman OMD BS years ago and have not looked back. Maybe this would have been good as I would be saving a shit ton of money

Hahaha. I understand for sure, this would alienate a LOT of DC fans. As an aside, you've missed out on a lot of phenomenal Marvel comics in the intervening years! Any chance you'd take a look at the Marvel side of things? I'd be happy to offer up some recommendations!

@@TheComicsPalsnot sure - I am considering Ultimate Spidey when vol 1 goes to trade. Honestly Dc has me spending so much that I keep it to that and maybe 4 or 5 indie books that I love so I am pretty happy. Looking forward to Absolute Power for sure even if I am not loving Batman right now. I hope the Sovereigns story get brought into it as well.
