This is the perfect song choice to farewell the beautiful Judith Durham. I’m not sure you’re aware but Judith suffered a brain haemorrhage only a few months before this concert in 2013 and was still recovering when she performed this concert. She had to relearn how to read and write and play piano etc. The other band members held her hand and guided her off stage at the end but she did well to stand during that whole song. She fortunately did not lose her ability to sing. RIP 💕

I am a 68 year old Aussie male who has been a huge fan of the seekers since I was young and first heard Georgy Girl. I had tears in my eyes the day I heard Judith passed, even though I had never met her or seen her in a live performance it was like I had lost a part of me. Australia is in mourning and she will always be remembered for what she gave to this nation.

Yes she was Humble, a perfect description and the world is less of a place without her, along with our Livy (Olivia Newton John) who died shortly after Judith. Many of us Aussies I'm sure are feeling pretty sad as we have lost two Icons. Thankyou for you heart felt reaction, you can't listen to Judith and the Seekers without being moved. RIP both of our Beautiful Ladies.

The Carnival was over when they sang that. It was their farewell tour. So I think you chose well and we will always have their music. Judith was humble, kind and graceful. She lost her husband to Motor Neuron Disease and she spent much of her time raising money to find a cure. She did a lot for charity. She was left with a lung disease from having measles as a child and this is what finally took her life. I always wonder how she had that amazing voice with a lung disease. She was a lovely lady and the world is poorer without her. Thank you.

She will be very sadly missed. ❤️ For Australia it has been a sad week in our music world with also loosing Olivia Newton John this week. Melbourne where she grew up and started her music Career was light up in pink in honour of her and the work she had done to those who suffer breast cancer. Pink is the national colour for breast cancer in Australia. May there beautiful voices sing in heaven above.🙏🏻

The song was originally a mid 19th century Russian folk song. It was about a Cossack leaving his love from his home village to go off to war. Tom Springfield rewrote the words to be a modern love song set after a carnival, and along with The Seekers, adapted the melody to a more modern sound. The result, with Judith's voice, is sensational. It became a world wide hit in 1967. For those of us in Sydney the line "The harbour lights are calling" suggests that the carnival is Luna Park, and the reference is to a Sydney ferry to take her home, but of course The Seekers are from Melbourne, and the song must be referring to Port Phillip and Melbourne. It is the mark of great art that we can all find our personal journey in it, no matter where we are. Even on the other side of the world to the Russian steppes where the song began its evolutionary path.

And of course, Tom Springfield was British, so the meaning he had for these lyrics could be quite different. But as you said, the lyrics are open to each person's interpretation. And isn't that what makes a Great song? Each of us have probably experienced the ending of our own "carnival", and the emotional pain associated with it. And now we can all identify with losing Judith as "the carnival is over". I was a young adult when The Seekers rose to worldwide fame, and I loved their music so much. Can't get past the tears.

You certainly chose the right song to pay tribute to Judith Durham. We lost three outstanding performers in the past week - first Archie Roach, then Judith, and then Olivia Newton-John. I’m sure you would be familiar with Olivia, but may not know Archie. He was a true poet for First Nations people and a wonderful soul. He wrote in his biography that “songs outlive people”, and that’s certainly the case for all three - their music will live for many years to come and provide pleasure and comfort to all who listen to them. If you want to check out Archie Roach, listen to Took the Children Away. It’ll break your hearts.

Thank you for your beautiful and respectful reaction to this song. I think most Australians shed more than just a single tear at the loss of our Judith. And then we lost our Olivia Newton-John last Monday and once again we are in mourning of yet another beautiful singer who not only entertained us, but did so much for cancer victims. This past two weeks has been just devastating for us.
