Interesting note about the stage: Carlin's material was considered obscene in the 1970s and he was arrested several times when going off stage so whenever possible he would use a setup like this so the cops couldn't sneak up on him and he had a better way to escape if they come for him. Some times he would send his manager backstage to throw the cops off while he booked it to his car for a getaway. At least once, loyal fans formed a shield around him to get him out of the side door unseen. The fact that nearly, if not all of these words have made it to television now so that we don't even consider it today is testament to the impact that Carlin had on society as a whole.

The setup to the 7 words you can’t say bit was missing from this video. It started right at the payoff, the punch line, and continues through the next joke. One of the best part of the missing setup is the long list of words that refer to the words you can’t say, and like a lot of his list deliveries, it flows like poetry. I recommend you find another video that includes the whole joke setup.

PSA... we chose this video to react to because, for one, the title stated “FULL” for the video. Second, it was the longest video we found for the bit. Keep in mind we’ve never seen it before. So if we see a video that says FULL and is the longest, it’s a pretty good assumption that it’s the correct video. Thank you for your support!

I wouldn't go by the title of the video but the time of it. There are many Carlin monologues that blend together seamlessly. This one may not have the beginning but includes the latter half that many on YT cut out. Carlin was also one that adapted his bits as time went on. This one changed about five different times on five of his albums.

No worries! The longer version is better, but this was still awesome = ). It's easy for us who know all about him to criticize, but I think this was a great reaction, and a good intro to Carlin. He got a lot more political later, but still kept the silliness. So hard to pick a recommendation for a next one. Modern Man is basically a song/rap, and awesome. Saving the Planet is one of my personal favorites. Or The Death Penalty, Sanctity of Life, Things We Have in Common. The Hippie Dippy Weatherman is another classic from around the same time as this one, and it's pure silliness and wordplay. Really, almost any Carlin clip is worth watching, although I like his later stuff the most. Thanks for another great video = )

Love to see a new generation discover George Carlin. I'm OLD, so I remember George when he first started out. I grew up with him and miss his insight. The things he talked about that are still relevant today, he said THIRTY years ago. He was WAAAY ahead of his time. He is still considered one of the top 3 comedians of all time, with Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce. Lenny and George were arrested many times for their "obscene" language. He did an interview with Jon Stewart that detailed how he wrote his material and worked. His concerts sold out all over until he died. He was my guru. Check out the remastered version of "Mudbone-Littlefeets" by Pryor. The BEST version has audio but no video but it's more than worth a listen. Video version not nearly as good. Red album cover (11:49). I was high the first time I heard it in 1974 and CRIED from the laughter.

Love George Carlin! On July 21, 1972 George Carlin was arrested in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after his concert and charged with violating the state's obscenity laws after performing his controversial routine, "seven words you can never say on television,"! His case went all the way to The Supreme Court! They ruled he was exercising his first amendment rights and from then on comedians/artists could use profanity for there show! The radio station that actually played this was WBAI.... the FCC had fined them for playing it! But when George won his case with the Supreme Court there charges/fines were dropped! The obscenity laws changed and our society was changed by George Carlin!!! RIP George Carlin 2008!

This was performed at Celebrity Theater (The Round) which opened in 1963 Phoenix, AZ. The stage was a revolving one although I don't know how often it is used that way. They also do music concerts there as well as Boxing and more. No seat is more than 70 feet from the stage. Pretty cool place. This concert was in 1977 I believe and his first of 14 HBO Specials by Carlin.

Lotta people saying this was the wrong video.... so yea there are 2 different clips from this show that float around the tubes. Everyone with a reaction channel picks the other one with the longer buildup. I for one am glad you guys chose this clip, it was a nice change of perspective and hopefully those who are going on and on about it being the "wrong video" will stop. Your Carlin reactions are fantastic, I love seeing a whole new generation discover this guy. It usually doesn't take people long to realize that he's not really a comedian by the strongest definition of the word, but more of a philosophical performance artist who.. happens to be funny AF. You mentioned the round stage, which, yea... isn't done a whole lot anymore.. little backstory on that particular stage he was on: This show was filmed in 1978 when Carlin was 41 years old, at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. Its one of the best venues to see shows (I live in Phoenix). There's not a bad seat in the place, and get this: that stage rotates! Not so much a thrill for a comedian per se, since they tend to wander around anyway, but if you're seeing a band.. everyone in the place will at some point be face to face with the artist, while the stage slowly turns throughout the performance. I am so thankful that I was able to see Carlin live during his last tour, about a year before he died, in that same round Phoenix theater. He exuded an energy that no one can replicate.. he made us laugh and he made us think! You guys are fun to watch, keep up the good times!

Wow this brings back so many memories. I accidentally stumbled onto one of the vinyl records my father owned called _Occupation: Foole_ . And yes the final E on foole was intentional by Carlin and not a mistake by the printing company. I remember listening to that album, both sides. The very last segment was his _7 Dirty Words_ routine. Needless to say I was a fan from that point on...at like 12 yrs old. I don't regret it at all.

George Carlin had a master level in the use of facial expressions. He was so good.

He got started in the 60s as a pretty funny but routine stand up, gradually got more controversial, when I was younger I had all his albums and I could recite his routines to my classmates to get laughs. Saw him live in the 70s I almost got sick from laughing so hard. If you want the best he's done check out baseball football. Well it's my best there's no dirty words but it's funny as anything.
