When Doctor Sleep came out, I was astounded at how accurate the interior of The Overlook was recreated using the actual blueprints that Kubrick used in 1980. I REALLY wanna see someone create a permanent exhibition of the interior and allow fans to tour it. It would seriously be a dream come true!

It was entirely intentional and meant to disorient the viewer, many of the rooms are physically impossible as well as several of the hallways (in Ulmans office it has a window looking outside but if you watch the background you see that there would be a hallway where that window view would be)

@@donufro It’s Stanley Kubrick. Though it’s something of a joke these days that all of his films get overanalysed to death, I can assure you that is absolutely an intentional element given how meticulous he was with details. Several lengthy videos analysing the film will easily convince you of the notion. All of the interior stuff is sets, which means it’s all designed from the ground up. That’s why genuine continuity and spatial errors stick out like a sore thumb in his films once you notice them. If he wanted a hedge maze outside the hotel exterior, he would have fought tooth and nail to have one arranged.

My stepdad has been to that Lodge! It was many years ago now, but he used to go skiing often. He and his friend took a trip to Oregon one year (back in the 90’s) and made a point to check the place out and ski. They had lunch at the Lodge and both of them told me the interior looked much like it did in The Shining and there was very few people inside when they ate there, so it definitely had an eerie vibe about it. I loved the book and the movie, though the book was definitely different. I’ve been a Stephen King fan since I was a pre-teen. He inspired me to become a writer! The music from the movie remains to be the creepiest of any film I’ve seen to date and the story in both forms still freaks me out! It’s very cool that you two made it there. It’s on my list of places to visit! I always enjoy your video adventures. Keep it up and safe travels to you both! 🌹

So the Stanley Hotel in Colorado is the inspiration for the book. The Timberline Lodge in Oregon was the exterior inspiration and the Ahwhanee Hotel is the interior inspiration - all of which was rebuilt at Pinewood Studios (I think?) in the UK for the movie? That’s really interesting and cool. The documentary Kubrick’s daughter shot discussed all of this, I believe.

Having completed my internship and worked at Timberline Lodge, there is very little of the lodge that was used in the film. Even the hallway scenes with the two twin girls were filmed elsewhere. The lobby where Jack Nickelson was typing was so large and cavernous but there is no area of this lodge that resembles that scene. There is one scene with a blue snow cat where the Timberline logo is seen on the driver’s side door. The real Timberline Lodge is an excellent hotel to stay and enjoy Mt. Hood where there is also skiing on the Palmer Glacier in the summer months often as late as August.

I would rather stay at The Stanley Hotel that's where Stephen King got the inspiration for the novel and yes I like the book more then the movie. The book is creepier and gives you a fear for the family as things progress. Jack's not a terrible person you feel hates his family even before they get to the hotel. Jack is a recovering alcoholic who loves his family and that's what gives him the strength to stay sober. He's very likable and you root for him as he fights against the demons that haunt him at the hotel.

I prefer Kubrick’s version. Stephen King, in my opinion, just gets too far off into the weeds of a story. Kubrick’s movie, while still long, has the exact correct pacing and build up of anxiety to tell the story in a focused coherent narrative. To what you said, I stayed at The Timberline Lodge in Oregon on a wedding anniversary one year and there was still snow up there. Made for a great spooky weekend. I hope to get to the Stanley one year. Cheers from Texas!

The way I understand the movie is that the exterior set built in Britain was the BACK of the hotel, with the maze being behind the hotel (and the parking lot in front of it). Fun fact I learned from watching Joel Ostean’s church service on TV. Joel told a story about a writer, who kept on being rejected by many publishing houses. So after the writer finished typing his latest novel, he threw it away in the trash. The writer’s wife found the manuscript in the trash. She turns in her husband’s manuscript to a publishing house. That manuscript that the writer threw away, but is wife saved, is Stephen King’s The Shining. Thank God that Stephen’s wife saved that manuscript, because if she didn’t pull that novel out of the trash, there wouldn’t of been The Shining film & TV movies.
