I’m a woman in my late 30s and I feel very comfortable with fasting. The less I eat, the better I feel. On days when I need to do a lot, I don’t eat. Not sure what that says about my body or the state of our “food”. But I have noticed that a lot of my female friends can not miss a meal or they get hangry and they are very unpleasant to be around.

I agree.. I don't eat on my busy days, and once in a fast, I find it easy to go even for 3 days... I feel fantastic and healthy and mobile BUT, to start the fast after eating is hard... I have done OMAD and lost about 22 lbs. I feel great but now have trouble doing the OMAD. I relate to what she had said all along. For when we vary the kinds of fasts we do our bodies don’t get into a rut or a routine. As our bodies will adjust to a routine and then hold on to fat. So if I just avoid meals do vary my fasting, and then not getting stressed this makes a big difference . I am post menopausal so the cycle thing is really not relevant, but lowering stress, not worrying about it and taking one day at a time. I also ask God for wisdom, strength and motivation when I am fasting. This helps a lot. Remember if you are stressed, then your cortisol is up and your body is holding on to fat. Let’s face it. We are just bodies, not God. We love to look good, but any kind of obsession is not healthy. Just try and enjoy the ride.

I am a 77 year old female who started eating one meal a day when I was 14 years old. I did not do it to lose weight. I did it because when I would wake up at 8 :00 am to go to school the thought of food was ridiculous. I was awake, but my stomach doesn't wake up until 11:00am : ) I was starting high school which was too far away to walk home for lunch, which made me happy because I was not hungry for lunch anyway. I did eat dinner which was always some form of protein. I am a meat eater especially ground beef. At age 74 I had to stop smoking because I was diagnosed with lung cancer AND I was told I had to take it easy. I did. For two years I sat on my keister and put on 60 pounds. I have been doing intermittent fasting since June and have lost only 21 pounds because I still eat junk. As for my strength, I went to a physio therapist last year to alleviate back pain from the excess poundage on my gut and she said she hopes that she will be as strong as me when she is 76 years old. As for all those side affects you mentioned that women have from eating only one meal a day, I can say they did not happen to me or at least I am not aware of them. I am a very happy, well adjusted, positive, upbeat person. I will continue with the intermittent fasting for as long as it takes to knock off the extra weight. My main focus is to stop the junk food fest permanently. : )

Here I am now 66 years old and depressed because I just tipped the scale at 256 lbs and was NEVER overweight until after my 3rd child was born and at the age of 40. I heard to fast, so I did...I made it to 38 hours and and had to stop. I lost 2 pounds, but, after 2 days, that was regained. I wasn't surprised at all., as I was pretty sure it was only water weight. And frankly, I can pee 5 pounds. I only eat one meal per day, and I really don't have any energy or desire to want to eat anymore. I am so glad I found you while simply seaching excercises for seniors. I will be watching more of your podcasts and would love for you to have more for seniors. I am not sure if "Fast like a girl" would benefit me, since I haven't had a cycle since shortly after my 3rd child was born and I had a tubal ligation, which really messed up my cycles. I really haven't had a cycle since I was about 36 years old. And, I had spent so many hours in Gynocologists offices with no results that I have simply given up even going anymore. They really don't show compassion, just push another pill, and push me out for the next co-pay. (the insurance industry really ruined that) (Trust me, I used to work for a 3rd party provider, and saw what doctors were getting in capitation payments if you went or not.) Bless Dr. Mindy.

My advice is to cut off (for those overweight / obese) or cut down on "Cooked carbs" based on my 18 years of research on gerontology and immunology. FYI, I do 3-day water fast every 3 months. I think one of the key components to successful fasting is keto/carnivore diet. If you are fasting on a glucose diet, it’s miserable. Switching to a ketones based diet regulates the blood sugar and hormones so that you don’t have the misery that you get when you are running on glucose. That being said, there are always off days where you just need to follow your instincts. I don’t stick to a strict schedule and I find that each month my PMS symptoms are so drastically different that I can’t predict my behavior - it’s to the point where sometimes I naturally fast and don’t want to eat and other months I’m starving and can’t get enough. Some weeks I’m full carnivore and it works great but some weeks I’m more keto and eat a max of 30 total carbs a day. I am flexible and understand that each day is different. I set different limits for myself each day based on how I’m feeling. Sometimes OMAD works great and I only get 1300 calories in and I’m fine the entire day. Sometimes I get home from work in the evening and need a second meal, but I’m cautious as to staying at or under 1800-2000 calories a day. It’s like a budget. You have to manage how many carbs and calories you can spend each day, but you don’t have to live each day the exact same way. Sometimes you can even save up to go over a bit one day.

Hi. I'm doing my intermittent fasting for 15 weeks already and loss about 15kgs and i feel a lot better. My current weight is 83kg. Started my IF journey with 98kg. Before this my period cycle is regular and normal between 24-26 days from my last period. But this month I don't have my period yet.😢 Im so worried. Today is my 30th day. Means already 4 days late. I've already done my BTL so I don't think i am pregnant. Or am i pregnant or might there be other causes? For your info, currently i am fasting for Ramadhan and seems like im doing my OMAD (one meal a day since i just drink a glass of plain water during my sahur) and take low carb meals for breaking my fasting everyday. Before Ramadhan i was doing 16:8 and 18:6. Does this affect my period cycle? I really hope you can reply. Thank you for your time😊
@JesusIsLord24788 ай бұрын
@@RARAFFIDAHASNAWI I think it would affect your cycle because I tried OMAD again recently and the very next cycle was a week late and after that it dropped to 26 days. its probably because the body thinks it's in survival mode and not wanting to support pregnancy when there's suddenly a lack of the usual nutritional resources. i spoke to my doctor and she said if I really wanted to go ahead with it then the maximum should be 3 months on it then take a month break before starting again

I was diagnosed diabetic Oct of 2022. I immediately took my health seriously losing 95lbs by cutting out flour, sugar, pasta, rice, oats, cornmeal, and processed foods. My current A1C is 4.8. I ate 2 meals a day between 6am-3pm. Because of my A1C my dr took me off Metformin. I am also late stage perimenopause (52 yrs old). I have had significant hair loss to the point i am now wearing a wig or hat when I leave my home. I am also dealing with an on going iron deficiency with my ferritin level currently 2.8. I have very heavy periods that are lasting almost 2 weeks at a time and coming again 2 weeks later. I am in a constant state of exhaustion! Because of my intolerance of prescription iron meds, my dr has me taking 2 flintstone vitamins with extra iron each morning. Once off Metformin I have started to gain weight again - 15lbs. I have convinced my dr to put me back on a lower dose of Metformin to help me turn my cravings and weight back around - I’m terrified of going backward to the horrible state I was before my diagnosis! I do take a number of vitamins to help me. All this to say weight loss and keeping weight off is a serious struggle, losing my hair is terrifying, and fluctuating hormones are making me feel out of control….. is there ANYTHING that can help?? Thank you for talking on this subject! It’s so important!!

Good for you for taking care of yourself and losing the excess weight. I hear you on the (extreme) hairloss. I have this problem myself caused by too much stress and trauma in the body, eventually turning into adrenal fatigue (burnout) 3rd stage (body stuck in fight/flight and in catabolic stage). I know the feeling of shame of losing so much hair. I wear a hat in winter and a cap in summer when I leave the house. I know my hairloss will get better when my body isn't in high stress anymore, I can sleep better and I stop overeating chocolate. I hope Mindy will give you some useful feedback and/or you'll be able to fix your hairloss soon. Just a small tip, you may want to look into silica (ortho sillicium for it's bio availability I believe) for hair loss and other things (hair, skin, nails, bones, liver, nerve function, collagen etc). I recently bought The original Silidyn (not sure if it's a local brand), and it is supposed to take about 3 months or so for it to start working (or in my case longer because of the chocolate addiction and extra stress).

Have you tried hair growth supplements? Vitamin D deficiency can also cause hair loss. I’m taking Iron with vitamin C, D3 with K2, Fish oil and vitamins for hair, skin and nails. I eat two meals a day. Also be careful of caffeine and tea can block iron absorption. My hair had thinned from low iron, low vitamin d and severe stress but shedding has reduced. It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day. Low vitamin D can also affect thyroid which can cause hair thinning.

I’ve just watched a podcast about lack of oestrogen in menopause causing some of these issues (on the Diary of a CEO channel) - apparently HRT can solve these problems in many women. I would only use it as a last resort though - I’m trying natural remedies at the moment (vitamins, magnesium, Ashwagandha, etc) and a whole food diet (cutting out sugar, simple carbs and processed food). Ashwagandha in particular can lower glucose levels, balance hormones and reduce anxiety.

Sorry, but I am NOT going to bother following cycles with charts and graphs... too much dang work. Now I just concentrate on 70 g protein and keeping the keto strips pink, and fast only when I'm busy and "forget" to eat. I figure that if I can do that without stressing, it will match the hormones naturally. For me that generally works out to skipping some dinners, one 24-hour fast each week and an occasional 36-hour fast if I'm ready. It feels a lot better than forced OMAD and the results are the same.

OMAD is great if you are diabetic/pre-diabetic or medically obese (more than 30%+ BMI). If you are just like 10 to 20 lbs overweight, you do not even need OMAD. 2 meals a day or time-restricted feeding with a smaller window is good enough. Also don't completely avoid carbs, even for men, you still need some carbs. Initially, I could go without much carbs, for weeks even. But once I reached 205 lbs (I was initially around 255 lbs), I started working out. Ideally either 150 minutes of cardio or lose at least 900 calories a week from exercise, but that was devastating on my joints to do in nearly hour-long sessions, so I split them into 5 regular 30-minute sessions. With carbs, I recovered faster somehow but most importantly could push harder. I stagnated on workouts without carbs and wasn't breaking new ground, but with carbs, I started progressing further which is good. And your workout performance should always be progressing, if you don't see improvements in a week or 2 or it gets worse, you probably need to check your diet again. I know some will yap and say I need to be fat-adapted / more ketosis etc but hey I do what feels best for me and it worked.

What I find really difficult is the contradiction of several experts. Some say you need more protein, others say we cannot really absorb proteins sufficiently from what we eat and therefore its wasted. Some say the healthiest way is vegan, others say its meat-based. But you do indeed need proteins to not lose muscle mass. However, the next person says "protein is all a lie". What to believe? Because all of them are somwhat backing up their claims with research paper. So far, I am eating everything but UPFs. I am still not sure how to handle calories but it at least feels good to cut out all artifical and addicting stuff. Only proteins is a big questionmark.. yes or no?

Fasting is older than her and will remain long after these fads We’re not mimicking any cabe days. The body is designed to not overload itself all the time as we do today. Omad is more natural than 3 meals a day. We just have to look at the size and sickness of people in the world today to demonstrate that 3 meals full of carbs, sugar and sugar snacks plus dessert is utterly unnatural. If a woman is healthy omad is great for her. We are simply eating too much all day & it’s killing us. The West feasts all the time and their birth rate has tanked. Fasting is not about dieting if done properly. They ought not to use it that way. So the solution is not to use fasting or Omad as a dieting tool. If done varied and properly the eating window is not a ‘one meal a day’ approach it is a once a day 8 hour window to eat responsibly and properly.

Hi Dr Mindy. While I follow your videos a lot I still get baffled by one question and I’ve never had the answer to that. My history, I lose weight the first half of my cycle and then gain it all back in the second half. I’m so stuck fasting seems to be the only thing that makes me lose weight. If I don’t fast in the last ten days of my cycle, I tend to binge eat, because of my food addition. How am I supposed to lose weight in the last ten days? I can’t seem to maintain it. I’ve been stuck in this cycle for months.

💙 takes some real bravery BUT put the scale away during Nurture phase or for the next 90 days, it is not the best metric to be focusing on. Healing and metabolic flexibility and balancing your hormones need to come first. Stress of the scale will raise cortisol and counteract your efforts. "when cortisol is high progesterone is shy". It will be hard, make small changes, you can do it. 👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏼

@@DrMindyPelz okay. You mean I should focus more on eating nutritious foods and avoiding junk and empty carbs and packaged foods as much as I can? Then go back to fasting after I get my period. Thank you for your response!

We're no longer in the CaVE. OmAD started me on the Binge Eating Disorder track. One size does not fit all. Give your body nutrient dense foods, and move your body as much as tollerable and sustainable😊
