ABOUT US:
Mormon Stories Podcast is the longest-running and most successful podcast in Mormonism - hosted by Dr. John Dehlin. At Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We also occasionally interview scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1) Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology, 2) Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis, and 3) Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions.
Mormon Stories Podcast is a product of the Open Stories Foundation - a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting Mormons in religious transition.

I experienced the same kind of shame and guilt concerning sexuality in the Southern Baptist Church. We girls were taught that if we couldn't give our future husbands the "gift of our virginity", then we had nothing to offer. If you had already lost your virginity, you were beyond redemption. I wish more people knew how common this was. The pastor and his peers spent most of our Sunday mornings talking about the politics, the fate of unrepentant sinners, making jokes about gay people, and denigrating everyone outside the faith. I was so happy to get out of there. I packed everything I had into my little Ford Contour (worst vehicle ever 😂) and left home for Atlanta.

I have seen it as well. Many religions teach chastity so heavily and then expect once married to have lots of children. It messes people up mentally. They shame them if they give in. They don't teach about birth control and STDs so that when they do make a "mistake" they really make one. They don't teach about healthy relationships and behavior around sex. They are told to do things that conflict with biological urges that creates distress in a young person's life. That can lead to depression. It's all around just messed up.

I could not talk to or be around my younger siblings for fear " the behaviours would spread" as of it was some disease. When I got pregnant out of wedlock in 2004 with my BFs(who is now my husband)kid, wooooah nelly. I lost a ton of "respect" from my dad and he said he thought of me as "dead". There's no devil, no curse no sin, just people growing up and moving out to be their own family. There is no hell or devil in Judaism, Xians invented that all in their own. The Bible has a number of heroic prositutes, implied homosexuals and adulterers, and there isn't a single wedding, people are married when they move in together and have sex. I can’t fully imagine the stress she felt. I told what I thought was my very good friend what was happening and of course he went and told the bishop. So stake president, her parents, me and whomever else was there had a nice talk. I reminded them that we are all adults and we’re able to contemplate reality and come to our own conclusions. I was only a member for a year or so and was quickly on my way out due to finding out one terrible thing after another. Well she was accepted to BYUI and was moving in a month or so. So she did. O, and she had her period later that night or the next morning. Perfect timing haha… she had so much shame surrounding any form of emotional expression. Discussions about normal sexual habits, but with men in their 40s and 50s when she was 12 or 13. She said she wasn’t able to look men in the eyes for years. They abuse almost every child in this way. There should be laws against this and see it as potencial grooming. And make it a sex offense. Enough is enough!!!

It is heartbreaking to hear some of these stories. I am a current member, but I have been blessed enough to have never been treated the way some of you guys have been treated by church leaders or by family members. Just over 7 months ago, I got my girlfriend (we had only been dating for 2 weeks) pregnant. I was in shambles. I felt such immense guilt, yet my family supported me every step of the way. My Bishop at the time never tried to impose guilt on me, but he loved me and told me that life was not over, that in fact things were all going to be ok. Since then, there have been many, many dark and difficult times (some of them self inflicted), but my wife and I are now married and anxiously awaiting our coming baby 🙏. I am so sorry for those of you who were put down by family members and leaders, that would have been so hard for me to be in yall's shoes.

A teenage girl having sex with her boyfriend is not an "addict" and keeping your kids dumb and afraid of sex only causes more stds and pregnancies. It's radical religious behavior that is the problem. Its about control, and they control through fear, and by making you believe your own body and *very* natural and normal desires are wrong and dirty. No one wants their kids to have sex, that's understandable, but they are going to at some point and the severe and oppressive teachings from the church don't stop anything. No same person can listen to this story and this appropriate action was take. This wasnt looking out for anyone, this was a cult controlling what young women do with their bodies, how original. These same "elders" that seek oppressive control are continuously found guilty of sexual assault, it's all a ruse. while i can agree sex absolutely does have serious consequences, and that people need to look out for their kids, it will be a cold day in hell before anyone teaches my kid that their bodies are wrong and dirty. "Sex is bad and you're disgusting for wanting or doing it" doesnt help anyone, and only makes for diseased and knocked up teenagers. Teaching kids about sex in an age appropriate way doesnt make em go out and have sex immediately, and it arms them with knowledge which protects them. These people do not care about her or you, they care about control, and so they'd rather keep young people stupid and ashamed in an attempt control them. Kids can grow up to have healthy adult sex lives or they can grow up with the trauma and fear the chuch (even after theyve left) has instilled into them, forever messing up their ability to have healthy and enjoyable sex lives, but they WILL grow up. What happened to this woman is awful, and there are bad people in every religion who can twist and warp what is ACTUALLY being taught. I believe this woman should not have been treated like a murderer, and that she should have been given love and compassion, but also told that sex is special, and you should only have sex when you are married, and only have sex with the person you’re married to. Its about commitment and trust, and sex is a wonderful thing. Sex should be respected for what it is, it is so special to share that level of trust, love, and intimacy with somebody. I dated a mormon guy in high school and he was one of the worst human beings I've ever known. He had 2 kids while in high school, and was married at 17 to a 15 year old. After he got divorced at 19 after his kids were taken by CPS, he started dating me, and tried to convince me to marry him and have a baby. I am so lucky that I got rid of him. Every mormon man I have ever met was hyper s3xual, racist, and a dead beat dad.

I'm so sorry you were treated this way. It was handled completely inappropriately. I'm an active member of the LDS faith and I'm appalled that your parents and leaders did/said any of that. That's not what Jesus would have done. I promise, that's not how it is supposed to go in the church. I'm so sorry.

That’s kind of you to say that to her. But unfortunately that’s exactly how it goes in that organization. And according to an actual bishop, the verbiage they use when “counseling” transgressive adolescents is by the book. So she heard exactly what they are told to say to someone in her position. You may be one of the few members who feels this is wrong, and I agree, but saying it was an aberration of how it was supposed to have gone is also wrong.

When you have all the access to information that is provided in the world, and all access to the short and ridiculous history of your cult, and you still choose to believe the rantings of a pedophilic sociopath who for some reason, despite taking his words directly from God, couldn't get the same words twice? Mormonism is just an even more batshit cult than baseline Christianity. I'm sure plenty of sexpest fathers talked themselves into thinking they were doing the best by their kids as well. No excuse.

@@joetaylor8687 Please don't trot out the usual argument about Hitler and Stalin! Hitler was Catholic and all German soldiers had "God with Us" on their belt buckles. The Catholic Church supported him, too. Staying studied for the priesthood as a young man. Also, no war was ever fought in the name of secularism or atheism, unlike religion, which was spread by the sword and used as an excuse to kill countless millions over the centuries.

Sadly this is all religions...but religious people can only see the flaws in other religions, not their own. The ancient Mayans that sacrificed humans to their God would have thought Christians were barbaric for thinking that circumcising little babies is somehow a good thing. Christians think that African cultures that eat the foreskin are barbaric. When in reality it's religion itself that's barbaric.

This breaks my heart 😔 I am so appalled by the way these high control religious groups treat their followers especially young people. I grew up in one as well, and I definitely can relate to being made to feel bad and like something was wrong with me for having any interest in sex. At 18-19 my mom tried to make me feel like there was something wrong with me and and when I finally moved out and left the religion at 23 and started dating someone who wasn't in the religion she insisted that I only left to have sex 🤷🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

@@masternamer9399 No I didn't have to learn the hard way. I was always a very responsible person and still am. I'm still with the same guy I was with 5 years ago when I left. Never been pregnant never had an abortion. We're not married because neither one of us are in a hurry and don't necessarily believe you have to get married if you don't want to. My mom in particular was just very controlling and strict and religion didn't help it just made things worse. Not saying that every religion is like that but I definitely have no desire to be a part of one because of my experience. I rather just have a spiritual relationship with God, or whatever is out there. I stay very open-minded, and if I ever have kids I will not force my beliefs or a way of thinking on them the way a lot of parents do today. There's nothing wrong with teaching your kids what your beliefs are but when they become of age if they want to do something else that's their decision and their parents should respect that.

LDS here. If anyone is tearing apart their family relationships because of perceived sins then they are not following the doctrine of Christ. Sin is part of our experience here. We need to experience it and repent and then try to do better. But above all we should love our families (especially children) unconditionally. These parents severing connections to their children will regret it. It’s the opposite of the will of God.
