This video describes the six facets of the Neuroticism personality trait from the five factor model of personality. The facets names in this video are from the International Personality Item Pool. The facet names from the NEO-PI-R are provided when the differ from the International Personality Item Pool. The facets of Neuroticism are Anxiety, Anger, (Angry Hostility), Depression, Self-Consciousness, Immoderation, (Impulsiveness), Vulnerability.
Neuroticism is a personality trait in the five-factor model of personality traits, which is also known as “The Big Five” model of personality. In this model, personality comprises five personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The acronym OCEAN is helpful for remembering the personality traits. Openness to experience is characterized by insight, creativity, an appreciation of art, intellectual curiosity, and a high awareness of feelings. Conscientiousness is characterized by impulse control, planning tasks carefully, being highly organized and prudence. Extraversion is characterized by getting energy from social interaction, talkativeness, and having a large number of acquaintances. Agreeableness is characterized by being cooperative, increased level of caring, empathy, friendly, seeking to compromise. Neuroticism is characterized by mood dysregulation, anxiety, worry, depression, frustrating, nervousness, being easily upset, and low emotional stability.

Neurocitism, six facets IPIP and Neo 1. Anxiety High = easily worried flight and fight is easily triggered 2 Anger High = being angry when they are cheated, feel anger but may not appear angry 3. Depression High = sad, difficulty starting tasks, low energy 4. Self consciousness High = is concerned about being judged by others negatively 5. Immoderation / High = short term gains, impulsive 6. Vulnerability High = panics easily, stressed easily, feels more confused .. High conscientiousness can in general balance the negative outcomes of high neuroticism

Holy crap man, it's taken me 41 years of life to learn that I'm extremely neurotic. I never realized there was a name for how screwed up I am. Thank you! This somehow actually makes me feel kinda better. So I'm low openness, mid to high conscientiousness, low extraversion, mid to high agreeableness, and extremely high neuroticism. Wonder what that all means for me...

Try tapping into your conscious side a bit more after you have accepted what you can not change. Always work within your circle of influence, especially when you are doing the right thing for the right reasons (that is in the Glory of God). And if God has allowed you to be overburdened with more than you can handle, it is because it's within your testimony of deliverance and redemption that you have yet to manifest into reality.

1 of my 2 best friends is actually high in both neuroticism and conscientiousness and he's high in extroversion. It's pretty interesting to watch him go as he reacts to the world and try to work though the obstacles. We work together as a check and balance for eachother to ensure we do not become big headed or unbalanced.

i have read a study on relationships and neurotisism, and the conclusion was - ensureing regular sex actually helps couples with at least one neurotic member, a lot more than it does non neurotic couples. it apparently does things for neurotic couples that it dosent do for non-neurotic ones, they said with regular sex a lot of the differences kinda went away.

You have way of fitting these concepts together so a person like me can learn and understand them more easily. You would surely make a great teacher or professor. Very informative video! I used to be very high in neuroticism but in the last year or so I tried to understand myselfe better and was working on me. Now I changed facets of my worldview which made me calmer and also improved my diet. Now I still can get overwhelmed in certain situations but now I can calm down quite quickly to the point where I can think straight forward and believe in myselfe that I can handle the situation. Can you please make a video where you explain how neuroticism develops and changes in the course of a lifetime and how it gets moderated?

TheYacu - Look into getting diagnosed for ADHD. Every single thing he is describing is ADHD. There is no cure for this, as it's a difference in the prefrontal cortex and low dopamine and serotonin, BUT, it absolutely can be managed through CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), exercise, healthy eating, mindfulness, and meditation. There are websites and KZbin pages dedicated to ADHD which are very helpful.

@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's pretty interesting and I noticed that a few times too (like in my parents for example). I think what happens perhaps is that neuroticism causes people to feel restless and more concerned when a problem is present, whereas low neuroticism scorers tend to be relatively relaxed and unconcerned. So if someone becomes easily concerned, they are more likely to then take action to mitigate the problem if their conscientiousness is high enough.

Thank you for another insightful video, Dr. Grande. I am an extroverted highly sensitive person who also has C-PTSD. I definitely see the link between those two things, and am inclined to believe being highly sensitive caused me to be susceptible to developing C-PTSD. That said, I also see similarities between my inherent HSP personality traits and neuroticism as you have described it, which makes me wonder if being a highly sensitive person can lead to psych misdiagnoses in general, and/or if being HSP makes one more susceptible to things like neuroticism, co-dependence, C-PTSD, etc. I am curious to know your perspective on this, given your tremendous knowledge and insight as to how one thing can influence another. Have I overlooked a video on this?? Thanks very much. :)

Thanks for the insight, again. (No you aren’t my new guru, haha) However I am realizing how people with high neuroticism withhold positive parenting skills from one child and apply it to the other. My father was (maybe for his generation- particularly gender fair in our family.) So when I encounter in-laws that aren’t gender-fair I get pissed. Now, I know I can listen to this and find a way to balance back the losses for adult kids to whom I am related. It is not their fault if a parent is imbalanced. Thanks for the clue.

i understand much of the information posted by these videos may be explained in a generalized or cliche manner, but you can't just say something as specific such as that high neuroticism can do better or things can be a bit more balanced out if they are score high on conscientiousness but also ignore the other combination of traits that clearly would make a huge difference in the quality of that person's life and overall functioning. this is the case with also jordan peterson's videos such as dealing with high conscientiousness and high openness to experience and high neuroticism but not also giving the other combination of traits that would be important to factor in as well. there hasn't been any videos on combination of traits that most people on let's say reddit would relate to or some of which by jordan peterson. for example, i've never seen someone do a video on perhaps someone who has low openness to experience, high neuroticism, neither low or high on agreeableness, neither low or high on conscientiousness, and low on extroversion. i feel like these combo of traits may apply to me the closest, however, this is because also have skepticism towards conscientiousness and agreeableness for one which is why i didn't lean myself more towards higher on agreeableness and higher on conscientiousness ( which the tests in the past i took on big 5 i believe classified me as such ), because they in my opinion are highly subjective and variable, where as extroversion / introversion, openness to experience and neuroticism are not so much ( depending of course again on the combination of other traits ) . for example, if you are high on openness to experience but also high on conscientiousness, the other traits you have do not really matter, why this is the case would be too complex for me to explain, but this brings up one of my major points with neuroticism and why it makes a huge difference of the TYPE of neuroticism of someone depends on the other traits. it's not a quantitative difference if someone is simply higher or lower on neuroticism, but how the neuroticism relates to the other traits of explaining why that person is higher or lower on neuroticism in the first place. this is why it's wrong to say those who are high on openness to experience and high on neuroticism suffer a lot, just because they have a artificial labeling as such. because in my opinion, if neuroticism was redefined or used in another dichotomy in the future, people who would have scored high on neuroticism would no longer be in that category and would actually score low, and rightfully so, as they should, however, most research ongoing has only been able to focus or interpret the higher functioning individuals, and not the ones who silently suffer in the background like me, and that's with me putting myself out there to get involved to be able to make things known as necessary as one would need to, this is from countless experiences from seeing others in mental health groups in person for years, online forums, youtube, other sites, research, etc. sadly, most research is limited or misconstrued, and the few sources that are more accurate are not enough to bring out a larger group of audience or commitee to make a difference in research. it's depressing enough that someone like me who created a research survey can't get it brought out to the public and do it partly from not being a student as one of the requirements and / or financial reasons and personal capacity limitations combined, because even if i was a "normal, healthy, functional person", it would still be extremely difficult and stressful to do something like this for anyone.

Quick question, I am very high in neuroticism and very high in agreeableness with a very low amount of anger. In the video Dr. Todd explained how usually the low anger is just about presentation because of the low agreeablenes but for myself i honestly don't feel much anger even when times are tough, the only thing that i do get is a little snippy if its someone who annoys me literally everyday. I have a question about a person's threshold for Neuroticism. Isn't it true that when a medical history is not done thorough enough like for example when it is a patient born before computer technology medical records after a lot of their relatives have already passed away wouldn't it be so difficult to measure a person's trheshold for neuroticism in say an emergency room setting that goes on for days during shortages that it is not appropriate when a doctor diagnosing through onlly the gathering of signs and observed symptoms sends such kind of person to a mental health ward too soon? Just as someone who scores higher on anger may not always appear often angry a person who scores hgiher on both cautiousness and introversion may not always appear often anxious when often in one double dilemma situation right after another while growing up during the great depression, going through the second world war, bringing up a family during several bear and bull markets on a frontier however when alone in an emergency ward left in the hallway for days then a doctor there might jump to conclusions way too soon by deiciding that person needs to be sent to a mental health facility or nursing home when long term rehabilitative care in a regular for all ages rehabilitation hospital would be far more appropriate.

I'm 43, in some ways this makes sense, I struggle with completing tasks I always have Nd I'm sensitive although I'm quite outgoing and don't suffer from much anxiety over social situations. I do avoid dealing with certain things though and certain people because I'm scared of my emotional response, I've often felt my emotions control me too much and I need to work on that. Will working my conscientiousness help reduce my neurotic traits?

I have another question about your presentation. When a medical professional has a lot of neuroticism in himself wouldn't it affect his decisions when coming up with any kind of treatment plans? For example, an orthopedic surgeon who suffers a lot from neuroticism who is offering unecessary surgeries that carry risks or a public health nurse that gives innapropriate advice on life style to single persons they are visiting.

All the facets, as you describe them in relation specifically to neuroticism, also very specifically describe ADHD as it's currently described in adults. Literally, very single facet describes ADHD to a T. I wonder if most neurotic people have ADHD (and may be undiagnosed), or if most people with ADHD are neurotic because the structural brain differences that show as ADHD are the same brain differences that show as neuroticism.
