Well done. Pioneers have been using this technique since at least the Oregon Trail. Great video, David.

Punkwood for a skeeter barrier, I never thought of that. Safer than chemicals or bonfire when all your gear is synthetic, thanks. And thank you for your trail work!

Excellent job, hard to not cough with that right in your face either. Good on that. LoL! Thanks for the smudge pot Dave, we'll benefit from having one hanging around in the area while working calves for sure. Much appreciated.

As someone who gets absolutely devoured outside by mosquitoes, I'm going to have to give this a try. I don't like chemicals on my skin either, but I always look for the highest DEET content I can find! This seems like a great alternative!
@davidspassage8 жыл бұрын
You and me both. I spend so much time in the woods, that I would probably be poisoned by now from the amount of DEET I would have to use. :-)

Thank you David I am going to pass this on to my daughter, she is allergic to mosquitoes so it is a big deal when she gets bit. when she was a teen she worked for the forest service in their summer employment program, building trails etc.. spent 10 hr. days in the forest. Where we live the mosquitoes are thick & they would give the kids 100% Deet horrible stuff! she came home reeking and said she would still get bit. It would be interesting to know if this would work here. We live in central Oregon the high dessert and close to a lot of lakes and rivers. I have gone mountain biking and been followed by clouds of mosquitoes perhaps if you were to carry the can with you somehow would be the only way that I can see it being beneficial, any idea's?

a bit of sage, cedar bark, sweet grass, mint leaves, pennyroyal oil with the punky wood makes additional good smelling (insence) to repel those nasty biters

What, you'd trade all that instead of the tried and true "home remedy" that's homeopathic, combining bloodletting & acupuncture

Yes! Thanks! I have made my own recipe for the particular skeeters here! All stuff I have in my kitchen! Cloves, peppermint, and cinnamon! I extracted with the vanilla extract and and have a Delightful scented oil that repells mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, bed bugs, and chiggers!!!! My dogs Hate it! I used the remainder material and have been adding olive oil, setting for a week or two, and straining the oil. It keeps producing effective strong odor! My fourth time reusing the same original material! I add the alcohol extract to simple lotion and now have a lotion to help!

South east is where the smudge pot comes from. Look at sketches of how the Timuqua had the interior of their huts. The little hole in the ground under their racks… that’s a smudge pot.

Really nice tips. We also use this kind of tips to keep the mosquitoes away from the house. But we use wild tumeric and burn them with the coal just like you and put them in the room and leave it for like around an hour. All the mosquitoes in the room are disappear after that.

I got an idea after watching this. Haven't tried it out but it sounds reasonable. In my part of Sweden everything in the woods is often wet or moist, and finding dry punkwood is just a sweet dream.. :) And with the climate change going on the prognosis looks grim. My idea is to first make a stick fire in the can from dryer sticks (well, you can still make fire if you know where to look for dry or reasoanbly dry wood) and then put moist punkwood on top. The fire and coal bed in the bottom of the can should eventually dry out the moist punkwood and consequently produce a nice smoaky environment (mosquitos excluded).

Native Americans in Florida used to dig a hole in the ground, make a smudge pot out of the hole, and then they would make their raised sleeping rack over the smudge pot. They also left the center of their thatched roofs open to let the smoke out, even though it mostly went out through the thatch.

@Away.Aweigh.A.Way.8 жыл бұрын
Yes! Good to hang around the stables in the morning and evening, especially if it's rained recently. Doesn't seem to bother the horses too much either. The best thing to do is find a good sized dead standing tree somewhere on your land and drop it around late fall to early winter. By the time the spring hits and all the flies and mosquitoes come out, you'll have a pretty good source of punk wood readily available. Roll a wheelbarrow out, fill that sucker up, and dump it into a 50 gallon drum or an old feedbag. Fill up a couple of paint cans and hang them around the stable (at the entry way and every couple of stalls or so) in the evening and just let them smolder overnight.

I wonder if PETA members squish mosquitoes. 🤔 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9 “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:19-20 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10
