The Soprano Disease

There are quite a few parallels between AJ and Christopher's struggles in the episode "Walk Like a Man." The final season of The Sopranos goes to great lengths to dismantle any remaining illusion that the crime family is a stable environment.

Actually there's more context to Tony and Chris downfall. It's not his sobriety. His sobriety is a means to attack Chris and a reason for Chris to distance himself from the guys. But the issue was Adriana and when Tony and her were in there car accident and Chris losing it and "Throwing down on a boss of a family." After that their relationship eroded.

Good choice on the retitle. It emphasizes not only the contrasting conflict between Tony's sons, but also the rampant putrid, rotten disease they deal with which is often left untreated and simply covered up. Walk Like A Man is one memorable episode (S6B goes so hard) largely in how it culminates Chris' arc, one of the most uniquely executed I've seen in media, and contrasts his struggles with with Tony's other troubled son. It's the show on full display; hypocrites, torn illusions of a glamorous lives, excellently contrasted storylines of men struggling to cope and express themselves in tough, macho world where the symptoms are covered rather than addressed at the roots. Del Lobo's 'The Valley' playing over a lonely Chris coming back to find an uprooted tree that he quickly puts back in its place when the issue (again) neglecting the roots is the cherry on top and summary of the episode. Making his demise early in the next show, all the more tragic and hard-hitting imo.

One of the great joys of this show is you can watch it and watch it and watch it, and have favorite episodes, favorite moments, favorite endings. And then you pull out a random one deep into the catalogue you haven’t seen in awhile-and you see it in a whole new light, and it becomes your new favorite. Walk like a Man is one of those. It’s like having a wine cellar at your disposal. They change in complexity and resonance as you return to them.

This is honestly just like an average Asian household dynamic. I think that's why I love The Sopranos, it resonates with me, more than something like breaking bad. The relationships are grounded in reality, I can see myself and people I know in a select few characters. I'm glad I watched this show.

I understand what you're saying about Christopher but it's really hard to sympathize with someone who literally has never engaged in an act that wasn't entirely self serving. The first time I watched the series as a teenager I couldn't believe how poorly people treated him but upon my second and third viewing I found him nothing short of repulsive, arrogant, ignorant and Narcissistic at each and every turn. He is at the very least worse than Tony. I actually applauded his actions in the sixth season.

He also has never ass**lted his wife while Christopher seems to put hands on Adrian every other episode, k*lled her pet without remorse and m*rdered his friend just because he wouldn't listen to his sob story. I'm not going to write further regarding Tony's morality though as that is of course a losing battle since he does engage in many acts that are undoubtedly cruel and awful. Christopher also drags others down to his level he just doesn't do it to the degree Tony does simply because he doesn't have the power and influence to do so. At any rate at least we can agree that Christopher is awful lol.

@@joeking6972 But that is just an excuse he uses to justify his actions of killing Christopher because later on he tries to rationalise his behavior to others at the funeral and carmela which Tony is known for throughout the series he makes constant justification as to hide from his true self being shown to others in other session he tells melfi they are 'soldiers' and soldiers don't go to hell they follow codes when asked if chris deserves hell but when the same question comes to him he hesitates but then gives the same reply and later on when realising that he is the one giving the orders he finds yet another justification like 'American corporations and government they were crooks and criminals too' that is Tony he can't face what he fears and constantly copes with it mentally by joking or lashing out and physically through 'panic attacks'

The reason that no one knows how to handle Chris is because Chris is a different person every couple days. One day hes a sober family man, then hes a hardcore gangster the next. Thats why Paulie and Tony are so perplexed on how to deal with Chrissy.

Great video. I always thought the mob-kids-at-Rutgers scenes were realistic and well-done and under-appreciated. When I was in college, there were a couple of guys on campus whose fathers were allegedly OC. These guys dealt a little blow and were campus bookies just like on the show. They were behind the point-shaving scandal that turned into a national scandal and caused the school to cancel the basketball program for a couple of years.

Had Tony taught Paulie more about Proust's madeleines, instead of Sun Ta-zoo, this conflict with Chrissy could have been handled with a little more introspection. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! At first I wanted to attribute JT's death to Chris covering up past dealings but I think it was pure jealousy. Chris realized he has no way out and sold his soul. While on the other hand, no matter what was thrown at this movie producer, JT Dolan will always bounce back and is allowed to be a happy wanderer. Chris ate JT, Tony ate Chris, New York ate New Jersey.

Nice job. I recently re-watched the episode "The Ride" where Christopher gets re-addicted to heroin after Tony offers him a glass of wine to toast to his wedding. Later, while talking to Carmella about Christopher's supposed focus and success, Tony is drinking a glass of the wine him and Christopher stole earlier and says "let's not sabotage his progress". All to dissuade Carmella from investigating Adrianna's murder after running into Liz La Cerva. God, I hate Tony Soprano.
