@@kathconserv I think Ralphie was more evil. He told an inappropriate joke about another made man's wife in a room full of people and when confronted lied about it. He undermined Gigi at every turn. Ralphie ordered the murder of Jackie Jr while in a relationship with his mother. He beat a pregnant woman to death. He burned down a barn just to get insurance money. Ralphie committed acts that should've and would've gotten him whacked if not for the fact he was such an earner. Richie on the other hand was a mean prick who was a product of his environment. The weirdest part of this for me was that back in the day I was watching "Sopranos" at the same time I was watching "Everybody Loves Raymond," where, while David Proval played Richie Aprile on the "Sopranos," Proval had also played the menacing-looking Italian father of the woman that "Brad" was falling in love with while the "Barone" family was on vacation in Italy, on "ELR." That was a total mindbender.

It went downhill the moment Richie struck Janice, but it perfectly describes the buildup in tensions and eventual climaxes in many scenes in the show. Tone, choice of words (breaking one's balls for example) and the ensuing physical actions leading to one or more getting hurt...or worse. It what makes the Sopranos appealing, then and now!
