I think Ralph was phoned by Jackie jr but said nothing and that jackie then phoned Tony in his last plea for release. Ralph needed to know Tony didn't approve and then Ralph knew what to do. The idea Tony would've been the first guy to call is ridiculous.

Common misconception is that Vito shot Jackie in the back of the head. But if you look closely, Vito's gun doesn't cycle when shot and doesn't have any blowback. This is in fact his son's cap gun that Vito used to attract Jackie's attention to tell him that Ralf and Tony agreed to give him a pass. But Jackie got scared, tripped over his own foot, fell face down into a snowdrift and subsequently drowned in three inches of snow

I always thought the chess game was the perfect metaphor for Jackie Jr. His whole life was like that chess game. Anytime he encountered something hard, he just gave up - and not just give up, but flip the middle finger at life. Can't handle Med School? Quits and pursues mob life. Can't handle being faithful to Meadow? Decides to see who-was on the side. Can't handle being low on the mob totem pole? Tries something really dumb (robbing the card game) to jump the line. Like Omar said, he should've played things out - persevered, or at least just tried a different but intelligent approach to his goal. No Med school? Try business school or something easier. Don't cheat on Meadow - let her down gently and with respect. Don't try jumping the line in mob life - keep your head, be a reliable peon for a few years, work your way up. He didn't do any of this - Instead, he'd just give up and do something stupid to fuck everything up. Very allegorical.

@Brett Mitchell Exactly. It's sort of like the Tony B thing, except Tony's love is for Jackie's already deceased father: Tony doesn't really want to do it, but he knows what needs to be done. He can't have this kid coming to a summer BBQ with Christopher and Furio! But he can pin the responsibility on Ralph, who he knows gave Jackie Jr. a gun, told him the Feech card game story and did a million other things to undermine Tony's attempts to keep the kid out of the life. And on some level, Ralph knows he is partly responsible too, which is one of the reasons he'd like the decision to be made by Tony.

One thing I like about Jackie's last scene is the difference between Matush and him being the getaway drivers in the botched robbery (Matush leaving at the first shot and Jackie stealing the car and leaving Dino to die) versus a professional driver. Vito was the perfect example for this. People have pointed out how slow he was to get into the car, and that's the point. It shows that a professional driver will have the total patience to wait for even a hobbling obese man to get completely in the car, whereas a low-level driver will be too panicked under pressure and will leave his crew. A professional also knows to drive away slowly, since screeching tires and traffic violations draw even more attention.

It was deliberately done like that. The writers hated Jackie, the character and his arc. He was stupid, arrogant and also expendable. So they made his death exactly like a bad 70's crime show. Vito appears out of nowhere, the close up of the gun shows it's a toy replica, Jackie just falls straight into the only drift of snow on the street. Vito just toddles back into the get away car. I'm 100% assured the scene where Jackie Jr. gets shot was made in a hurry. The editing was horrible, the sound effect for the gun was horribe, the gun itself was a miserably bad prop, Jackie Jr. fell on a pile of snow that just happened to be on the side of the road, with some red spraypaint on it.

Agree 100%. Whoever the assistant director was for this episode really ought to feel bad about this scene. It's worse than stuff from 80s low-budget productions. And they could have fixed it after it aired, but chose not to for some reason. I mean, that prop gun deliberately doesn't look like an actual gun, because it's not meant to be used in close ups... so what do they do? Close up. No level of rush can explain that incompetence.

I'm assuming the idea was that Vito was sat in the car waiting. Jackie passes by, he gets out, walks up behind him, then once he's taken the shot the car catches up with him and he very, very slowly gets into the car. But yeah, this scene could've been shot better.

3:24 idk if it’s much but Jackie saying “what are you laughing at? in a playful way really demonstrates a side of him that might not have “bottomed out.” As someone who works in elementary schools, I appreciate this line bc it shows Jackie could have had an extraordinary life where he made people happy and had special relationships, such as this one. TB to the many saints of Newark (not my most favorite) but when Christopher cries when tony holds him, a relative mentioned a tell children had…and to see this girl smile is so upsetting bc it showed Jackie really got mixed up in some bad stuff (even if it was outta respect to his fawtha). Sad what happened to him

@@ortodogge I think this is a good way to look at it and is probably a lot closer to what was intended by the show than "haha stupid kid got himself whacked." If anything, the whole arc is a pretty good example of how manipulative groups like gangs are a black hole preying on those around them as potential recruits, especially when there are people who are meaningfully disadvantaged in some way that they get ahold of (like Jackie Jr. here, who apparently has a learning disability that seems to render him unable to make use of the opportunities for education and such that he talks about in earlier episodes, and instead falls into the horrible shit he grew up around.)

The final scene is like a summary of Jackie's entire life and personality. He has twice shown his foolishness before a board game, scrabble and Chess, a word game and a strategy game, he says the wrong things and he takes what's said the wrong way, he tries to move his pawn two spaces at one point showing his eagerness to move ahead but not understanding the game he is playing nor the rules of it but unlike chess in the game of life he doesn't have a little girl allowing him a do over. Unfortunately nobody ever taught him to develop his knights, he can't see the whole board or his place on it nor does he really even understand the rules of the game and unfortunately he has neither time nor the patience to learn and when it blows up in his face he leaves his " knights" stranded and knocks over the entire board, if Ray Ray had been there when Jackie sped past Dino he could've told them both "I think you're done for" and he is, a short trip to the market is all that was left for him but what he really needs Tony owns and his business ain't welcome. Jackie's final gesture is a smile and a tease toward the little girl showing he never was a truly evil or malicious person just a childish one who couldn't see what was coming next or as Uncle June so eloquently put it "the kid always was a dumb fuck wasn't he? Didn't he almost drown in three inches of water." At home or at the penguin exhibit the least dangerous place of all Jackie Jr. Finds a way to drown whether in a small puddle or listening to Ralph Cifaretto he stumbles because of it and ends up face down but Jackie Sr. Wasn't around to rescue him this time and the penguins carrying a gun.

It shows a level of intimacy Tony never shared with anyone else in the series, and when Tony loses Uncle Junior to dementia, he also loses himself. This moment also shows why I hated the ending of the Many Saints of Newark… Corrado was the most human of the bunch. He wouldn’t whack someone out of anger over his own situation. Not that he was bothered by murder (he would have killed anyone for money or prestige), but he survived in that world by being able to control his temper and act with intention, not emotion.
@ProbInsane
@ProbInsane 2 жыл бұрын
@@gabriels2859 Junior was always a POS, extremely insecure and acted without emotion. He had a hit put out on Tony just because of suspicion he was undermining him, he also thought about siding with Richie Aprile and getting rid of Tony but decided not to completely based on his own interests. He was a snake and The Many Saints of Newark highlighted he's always been that way.

The way Tony is poking fun at Ralphie here is hilarious, he's enjoying the irony. Ralphie whined/ begged to be capo, and as soon as he is, he's got the decision placed in front of him to put a hit on his nephew or look weak and losing face. Tony's "You did the best you could, didn't you?" is such a middle finger, like of course Tony knows Ralphie didn't have any positive influence on Jackie Jr. and prob knows he coaxed Jackie into the robbery. If only he wasn't capo, least he wouldn't have the guilt of killing his dead friends only son lol
