I loved seeing your video. It helped a lot. Many European languages have ya sound for "J" But English, French, Catalan and Romanian stand out Spanish even more!

Yesterday I found your channel for a search I made, your videos should have a lot more viewers, you're making videos based on my language questions, I'm a language enthusiast from Iran, I study English language in uni and love linguistics. Keep up the good work, wish you more success day after day, and I speak British RP dialect.

I really love your work. Yeah I think that I get the I-J connection but the Y connection is missing. This seems to me to really stand out between languages and the the Bible. You mentioned Jose Spanish versus Portuguese for Jesus and Jerusalem are really big ones and you know depending on the language they use in i a j or y. I also find it fascinating to look at the name for John which is actually Yohanan in Hebrew. So my point is that I was expecting to have a connection with the like evolution of the letter J with the Gutenberg press and wider use of books. And of course you can't to exclude the widespread printing of the Bible the written word being translated. I don't know I'm not a linguist but I think there's probably a connection with that and I'd like you to I guess follow up on that connection that potential connection if it exists. Jerusalem - Yerusalem - Yerushalaim What was the first translation of the Bible to another language that made it's way to Indo-European? Greek then German? A none-biblical name with I-J-Y depending on the country of origin of the name Sonia-Sonya-Sonja... Yohanan-Yonni-Yohan-Ian-Ivan- John-Shawn are all Thank you

It looks like you've stopped posting? I was going to ask if you could do a video on the "ll" sound being y in spanish. and if perhaps like u and w, if perhaps it was something like a double "I"

How can the Spanish just change the j sound so drastically to a g sound, I thought changes in dialect were more subtle than this

By the way as a Dutch speaker I cannot understand why subtle is spelled that way, my friends and I used to pronounce it like sub-tol

It is a more gradual change, I didn't go into full detail in the video. The intermediate sound, which is somewhere in between the original 'y'-sound and the modern Spanish 'j'-sound, is called a voiced palatal fricative, and it's extremely rare; I didn't think I could give a faithful rendering of it in the video.

Good question about subtle - it's a very similar reason to why Salmon has an L, which I've already made a video about. It comes from Latin subtilis, the b sound was lost to sound changes in French, becoming soutil. Spelling reformers in English brought back the Latin b even though it was no longer pronounced.

other way around. Greek had Kappa. C was introduced later. the third letter in the Greek alphabet was Gamma. He already did a video on C: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5TIoHdtr7Rmp5Y

He literally said it was a French phrase used in English. Jalapeño is the English word as there is no alternative, it's a loanword.

Can you be more specific about the audio issue? I have a decent mic, it may be that I need to take a different approach in terms of EQ, compression, etc.
