0:25 The real problem is the parenting. Listen to the way he is cussing at that child and promoting prideful money bragging. If that's what she is learning at home, how do you think that child is going to act when she goes to school? How will she behave for the teacher if that's how her dad acts at home??? The parents need to do better.

My aunt and uncle are very well off, they have four kids. They work really hard on making sure their kids stay humble. They send them to a school with uniforms. One of the big reason’s was because her son was obsessed with comparing prices/brands with other kids at school. She bought him a pair of knock off shoes that he threw in the trash. After that she stopped letting them take/wear anything branded to school, which I really respected. It’s impossible to ignore their privilege, but I’m really glad that they teach the kids other values.

@@MitchMitch77-77 paying rent in the current rent market is something everyone should be complaining about since what landlords are asking pretty much everywhere is absurd. 4 to 6 x what the landlords mortgage shouldn’t be allowed, how much you can charge over their actual costs should be hard capped. "You spend the first 2/3 of you're life buying crap just to throw it all out in the last third". My grandmother told me this in my early teen years, and it has really stuck with me since, especially as I am preparing to move out of home for the first time soonish. One thing I’ve noticed (more online than previously) about this school shopping season is how many parents obviously are not teaching their kids to take care of their belongings so they don’t need constant replacements. If you get a good quality bag you should be able to use it for 3 - 4 years, mechanical pencils and most pens are refillable, and so on. Where did all the supplies from last year go?

I remember begging to get this cheaper backpack because the design on it was so so cute to younger me! I was told I was getting a jansport backpack and had to choose from their designs because it's heavy duty, somewhat timeless, and will last for years to come. My grandparents wanted to buy me quality, and in doing so, they have set me up with a backpack I am still using in college. I take care to wash it, but other than that, it has lasted years, and I still love the design. Looking back, the cheaper backpack was a design that would not have matured with me or the amount of stuff I carry. I think these spray backpacks are eye-catching to kids, but unless they're going to have the same quality to last for years and be a timeless design, it's just not a good investment.

in fairness, i remember plenty of expensive trends from my childhood in the early 2000s - american girl dolls, webkinz, livestrong bracelets, uggs etc. we didn’t have much money so i wasn’t able to take part in almost any of them and it HURT. kids inherently want to i fit in. i wish there were better ways to make them less materialistic, honestly it’s the parents who spoil their kids with expensive backpacks and lunchboxes etc who ruin it for the rest of everyone. those kids often know what they have puts them above the rest.

I put it on the floor from time to time, but in most restrooms (if the door has a hook), absolutely not on the floor. The bag I'm currently using is a $140 photographer backpack that I'm using outside of the intended purpose, it's also flood proof because it's coated. I think this is a great opportunity to teach kids to make wise decisions. Every year we give our kids a back to school shopping budget. I have a few things that they MUST buy (ie socks, underwear, at least one pair of jeans) but for the most part I allow them to spend the money how they see fit. One year my son spent half of his budget on a pair of shoes and ended up wearing the same 3 pair of athletic shorts and shirts. He had to do his laundry every other day to stay in clean clothes. It taught him a very valuable lesson.

Straight up insanity. Between these bags, the Stanley’s, the Sephora nonsense, and the devices kids use to stay current on the trends, you need a mortgage and maybe an IPO just to send a kid to middle school. Maybe it’s time to start middle school with a math class on all the expenses…

I’m 43 and the parents saying our parents would never are LYING! I remember being young and kids being late to school on Jordan release days because their parents would take them to get the shoes before school and we’re talking early 90’s. Let’s not forget those Starter pullovers…everything had to be Tommy or Nautica. We were actually worse! The kids today dress raggedy lol and Jansport was the expensive bag back then. How soon we forget lol even when my kids were young it was Nike bags and North Face jackets but they still were nowhere near as bad as those of us that grew up in the 90’s. Do a video about people that grow up and forget they were young 😂

I don't remember it being this bad in the 80's. Yeah you had IZOD and Swatch and Reebok and whatever. But not everybody had them and I don't recall anyone getting bullied over it. My family couldn't afford name brands and I still had a lot of friends.

I graduated in '06, and i still have my eastpak from high school. It fits so much in it and no damage... and this thing has been through a lot. I had it all 4 years of high school and college. I'm not even kidding. I still use it. My parents paid around $45 at Olympia for it. I remember because it was expensive for them at the time, and i begged for it. I remember going to the mall with my friends and hoping it would still be there for school shopping. It was this weird gray color i really liked and huge, so i knew i would fit all my stuff and not have to carry anything. This meant a lot to me since my high school was set up like a college campus.

Fantastic content today. Definitely needed to be said and you made it plain. Parents are the guide and gatekeepers but peer pressure is a powerful thing for kids to endure. Sadly when they grow up having to have the best they feel they need to keep up the esthetics for life and these people then raise other tiny humans who they teach the same thing. Real freedom is discovering who you are and embracing what makes you great.

the parents who give into these insane trends are subconsciously teaching their kids classist ideologies. they are reaffirming the notion that in order to be a cool kid, you have to have something special as a material good. i was severely abused by my peers as a kid for a lot of reasons, being poor was one of them. parents need to be mindful of how their parenting methods affect not only their own kids but the way the social dynamics their kid finds themself in affects them. bc you don't want your kid to end up like me: chronically ill with a personality disorder and a physical disability because of being abused by their peers.

I’ll admit to being a little confused by criticism of the $60 version… that’s what I paid for my Jansport backpack last year. It seems to just be the price of good backpacks nowadays. That being said, $200 is absurd unless it’s going to last until those kids have kids
@CLAWSxCANDY

Exactly Jansport hasn’t EVER been cheap $60-$80 but will last your child . That’s why us parents who bought em and used em ourselves invested in the brand. $80 one time meant I didn’t have to have a new bag every year. Those books used to be HEAVY. A book bag was an IMPORTANT piece of luggage 😂 now that they carry laptops it’s probably not as necessary to have a good quality bag . It’s not always about the money or brand 🤷🏽‍♀️ people miss the point completely why Jansport was a thing 😂😂😇CLEARLY THEIR BOOKBAG STRAP NEVER BROKE ON THE TO CLASS😂😂😂😫😩😅😅😅😩😩😩

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you for saying what needs to be said. I grew up poor. We ate out of the garbage we were so poor sometimes. I had cousins that would tell me I couldn’t touch with thier Magic 8 Ball 🎱 because my clothes came from the Goodwill. I didn’t even know what the Goodwill was, so it hurt a lot, and it didn’t help that both of them were really pretty too. I have spent 40 years trying to obtain things. When I was 8 they came out with an Oopsie Dasiey Doll and my big sister (16 year ago difference) had come in from out of the country trying to visit us (we lived in Winnipeg) and both me one. I was so consumed with the material aspect of it that I was afraid to use it. I never took it out of the box. When we moved I fell all the way down the stairs holding the box but I never let the box fall. Children ought not be consumed with materialism because as you stated it leads to a life that is unfulfilled. And you are always chasing something that doesn’t exist, it cannot be satisfied. Anyways if you were able to reach even one little boy or girl with your words then making this video is invaluable. 💜
